Jeremy Parish Presents: Retronauts Works (Chronological Retrospective Series)

Love Parish's stuff. As long as we're here I wanna mention Chronteno. This guy is attempting to play every NES/Famicom game in chronological order, and is about halfway through now.
Great series if you're interested in the history of the medium!

Dr. Sparkle is a hero. He's already covered the bulk of the Sega Master System library on Chronsega.

I remember Jeremy Parish from his 1UP days, and really liked his style back then. I've been watching this series since DrSparkle mentioned it on his blog. It makes waiting for the next Chron video more bearable as Jeremy generally pushes out a new video weekly.

Yeah, I love this series. He has such a nice way of narrating, very relaxing, which makes even the most mundane puzzle game episode worth a watch.

And the Space Invaders video blew my mind. An entire SNES game as a gimmick inside the GB cart.

Yeah it's impressive that they shoved a SNES ROM into a GB cartridge. It is kind of sad that Super Game Boy enhanced features in games haven't been preserved by Nintendo through Virtual Console or other means.

Thanks for posting this info about Game Boy World. I just watched the first 4 episodes and really enjoyed it. I caught my 8 year old son watching from across the room and invited him to join me - even he liked it. :) Looking forward to working through the rest of the series and may pick up the book.

I remember playing Populous on the GB for hours upon hours. Even though I owned the original on the Amiga I played the GB port more. There were a number of 16-bit titles ported to the lowly GB that managed to keep the gameplay experience intact. It was a surprisingly agile little system. So much so I sold my Lynx to buy my first GameBoy.

Whoa, really glad this threat resurfaced today. I LOVE series like this on YouTube. Holy damn, and there a lot of episodes already.

YouTubers like this is why I was never broken up about G4 ceasing to exist.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
I really like that this thread gets new episode updates, so useful for someone who never goes to YouTube on their own. Thanks dudes.

I like what Jeremy Parish says but the way he says things, let's just say it's a good way to fall asleep...

A great thing that keeps getting better. Can't wait for him to get to the Wario Land games.

He's a little drier when he's talking alone, but the material and presentation is enough to keep me interested. If you need someone to shout at you about video games, the rest of YouTube can provide in droves.

Just spent the last day watching the first 30 or so videos. Man, this is really great to watch if you're in to game history. He really goes in depth on some of these titles. I think my favorite so far has been the FF:Legend video; some really good information there. Really brings back a lot of memories too as I had (still have) a number of these games.

Funny to see this thread today, I found out about this project like a week ago through a Super Mario Land thread. Since then I've watched nearly all of the videos, I just love the concept and the execution is very well done. This quickly became my second favorite Youtube channel after CGR.

The only case I've disagreed with him thus far was on Solar Striker. It may very well be nostalgia goggles, but I just love that game.

Just caught up on the last 3 episodes, I usually wait for them to be on YouTube, but I'd missed one and then saw them all on the GameSpite iTunes downloads. Ayakashi no Shiro looks really interesting and I could easily see myself playing an English version of that while laying on the couch watching something.

Also just looked at the list of Game Boy games on Wikipedia, really interested to seeing the Dexterity episode in a few weeks as I remember liking that game back in the day.

Actually looks like some interesting games coming up in the next few months like Duck Tales and hopefully Ghostbusters 2 by the end of the year.

No promises... I'm producing episodes through the end of June 1990 (Spider-man), then taking a break from Game Boy for a bit to focus on other things. I love Game Boy, but some of these games are preeeeetty rough, and it kind of piles up after a while.

Thanks for everything. Gameboy World is such a great project. I'm anxiously awaiting your series on Final Fantasy VI to finish up.

That's cool dude, there are only soo many random anime games and subpar puzzle games one can take :)

Maybe start up Neo Geo Pocket Color World next for a total glut of fighting games :D

Shit, I was going to do this with the NES library. I got one video done and procrastinated.

ChronoCat will live on, I tells you!

Parallax

Fucking mercenary force. Ive been trying to think of the title of that game for decades

Parish is someone who may seem pretentious at a glance, but he really backs up everything he says with a wealth of knowledge.

He's probably my favorite person to hear talk about retro games. Loving this series.

Heiankyo Alien.

My goodness. I remember buying that with my paltry allowance because it was the only used game in the case I could afford. What a fun little game. I remember beating it, too.

@ToastyFrog

I know that you meant for this series to be in chronological order but would you consider doing a special episode on Pokemon Red/Blue (or Green) since they're celebrating their 20th anniversary? I love all of your videos so far but 1996 seems so far off :/

That would totally be awesome if you could, but I would understand if you were decline such a request as well.

I won't be covering Pokémon out of sequence on GBW, but I promise you will not be disappointed by what Kat "Pokéfanatic" Bailey is cooking up for the anniversary on USgamer.

You mean Jeremy obtaining CIB copies of real games?
Pat the NES Punk talks about CIB Game Boy games here. A quick except "You know why it never took off? They're not out there. It's a weird thing where there was this want to go into it but it's almost like the lack of supply meant there wasn't enough embers to even spark the fire..."

Fair enough :)

I just wanted to say how much I admire your dedication to pour so much detail into each of your videos. Going in, I was only really expecting to get a review of each game but I was blown away by the fact that you wanted to cover each game's history and their importance of their release throughout the Game Boy's lifetime.

Please keep up the good work and I look forward to keep on watching more of your videos!

While I loved Castlevania: The Adventure, I admit that the gameplay sucked pretty badly.

That level 1 music, though. Man. It was a Game Boy classic.

Yeah, in terms of scarcity, some of these games make the "rarest" NES games look like Genesis sports titles — they've been insanely hard to find. There's just enough of a Game Boy collector's market to spike maybe a dozen CIB titles into the $1000 zone, but not enough demand or notoriety to push somewhat less valuable games into the auction market. You'll pay four figures for a handful of NES games, but you can almost always find a few copies up for auction at any given time, because people know there's money in NES rarities; that's not the case with GB.

As an example, I've been watching for a CIB Boxxle II for more than a year with no luck... I managed to borrow a copy from someone finally, thankfully, but if it hadn't been for that I'd almost believe it didn't exist. A perfect storm of (1) a system with little collector prestige and (2) a format that encouraged portability (read: discarding boxes) has made the CIB hunt much more difficult than I'd ever expected. I'm making progress, though! I just paid for the next-to-last game I need for 1990 Vol. II; now I somehow have to get ahold of the box and manual for Fish Dude. Which is, yes, one of those games that has spiked into the $1000 zone, so I'm going to have to prevail on others' kindness for that one.

I just started watching the videos... wow. What a great way to document an entire game library for a system that doesn't always get a look in.

CIB does sound like a nightmare, but the same reasons you give make buying loose copies of most GB games super nice. It's still like SNES games were 15 years ago.

I love that none of the "I need to own every NES game ever made" crowd care at all about GameBoy.

Oh, absolutely. There are maybe half a dozen games that sell for $100 or more loose at the moment — Trip World, Fish Dude, Avenging Spirit, Sumo Fighter, a few others. Everything else is painless. Now's the time to round up all the interesting GB titles you can find, whether you want them boxed or not. Eventually the collector's market will turn its baleful appetite on handhelds, and then we're all screwed.

Anyway, thanks to all for the kind words. These are very dry videos that lack the zany screamo approach that YT demands, so it's always gratifying to get more than 100 views per episode.
