The GPD XD Handheld Android Console

Connected a 360 controller via USB and tested out the HDMI output today. Seems to work great, so long as you plug the HDMI lead in BEFORE turning on the device.

Plugging the HDMI cable into the device when its already switched on resulted in the whole system performing very sluggishly, as well as introducing input lag to the controls that shouldn't be there.

It has HDMI out? Now I have to get one.

Trying both the pre-installed SNES emulator and Snes9x EX+ I found the input delay bad enough to make the games unplayable. :/

I could make my own small handheld by buying an Android phone and one of those attachable controllers, right? I'd just need a cheap, decent phone and a controller that isn't huge, hideous and poorly built.

:(

I have a OnePlus One, a Dualshock 4 and a Nyko gameclip thingie and it works pretty well, but the downside of it is that since it's a phone, it's quite top heavy so it's not very comfortable and it does get tiresome to use while laying in bed. Of course the OPO is a bit on the heavy side as far as phones go, so if you use a smaller lighter phone it should be a decent experience.

Why aren't you using retroarch

Retroarch is literally all you need on this handheld.

I just received it. Will this somehow lower the input lag? I tried out Neo Geo and it's very noticeable there as well. If I don't find a way to solve this, I will sadly only get to use the machine to play native games and watch videos.

Seriously though, use retroarch.

Yeah, no. Retroarch is great under the hood, but the UI is borderline broken on Android right now.

Hmm, that's odd. I've not played too many SNES games on mine yet, but I didn't notice any lag in DKC or SMW. If there's a game you're particularly noticing it in, let me know and I'll see if I can check it out and maybe record a video a bit later.

wtf?? I have no lag at all....? 0

There is no such thing as zero input lag, only enough to not be noticeable. I have played through the first few levels of Super Mario World and while it's not completely awful, the subtle difference is enough to make me play worse and get annoyed. I don't see how this would be caused by faulty hardware.

I decided to do a little investigation, with Snes9x EX+ on the GPD XD versus Snes9x on my PC with a 360 controller.

Granted 30fps mobile phone video isn't the ideal testing medium, but it seems like both platforms show the exact same amount of input lag. Could be something specific to Snes9x maybe?

It's broken only if you are using touch controls. Works fine with buttons. Also, change the menu driver to rgui for the exact same interface as on the 3DS and Wii. No one has any issues with those:

Not sure how anyone could consider that interface to be broken, but whatever.

Going to have to correct myself here; it seems like Retroarch is one of a handful of apps on the GPD XD that only recognises your physical controls if you switch to PS3 mode (as opposed to Xbox 360 mode). Until now, I'd had to use the touchscreen only.

And switching to the older UI definitely helps too. I'd had a bunch of glitches with the default UI, from freezes and buttons that won't respond to a repeating one where all the text labels just vanish.

Apologies for my bluntness! I'm still not entirely sold on the UI, but it's definitely a lot more usable on the XD than I'd previously thought.

i meant 0 additional lag. i dont know why youre experiencing lag though.

Still not a great interface with my experience on the 3DS.

PPSSPP is probably the holy grail of user interfaces for emulators. snex9xtyl on the PSP was also fantastic.

Just got it anything people would recommend to do first, like better emulators or a better UI.

Congrats!

Regarding the UI, it'll depend on how much you hate the default. I wasn't a fan, so I went with Nova Launcher. Only costs a couple of bucks, and offers lots of customisation. There's a pretty good free version too, IIRC.

Regarding emulators, here's the ones I've been using (note the names, not the custom icons):

Some are paid, but most are free. All work really well, from what I've played so far.

Just received mine - emulators are great, but I was really hoping I might be able to use it for gamestreaming. Thing is, it doesn't allow me to connect to my 5ghz network. Presumably because it doesn't have ac. So, I don't mind 720p30 but even that is spotty on my 2.4 network.

Any tips to get it running? I've analysed the wifi area and put the router on an empty channel over 20/40 mhz and still loads of stuttering.

So I'm confused, used the happychick app to download a PS1 game. It installed, then says "PS Emulator downloading...." and then times out eventually since the download is massive.

Few small issues I have with the system like mushy dpad and ergonomics but otherwise it's a pretty nice system and was surprised at how smooth the emulators are.

Gonna need aloooooot of tinkering to get the system to where I want it, messing around with settings, custom launcher, but yeah I'm enjoying it alot it's a pleasure to finally have a system like this for N64 and PS1 games.

A Dingoonity user had this for his Launcher, it's more or less what I want for mine, just a pain in the ass to fiddle with everything.

Quick question for anyone that may know.

I have installed mupen from the play store as I move away from the preinstalled apps. Runs good and all but controller issue, the B button functions as 'exit' within the OS so it becomes unusable in the emulator. Can't figure out how to change it.

Any ideas?

That's really weird. I've got Mupen installed on mine too, and the B button doesn't do anything beyond what you'd expect within the emulator.

Have you tried switching from 360 to PS3 controller mode (or vice versa)? I've solved several weird controller issues by doing that.

I see. Damn.
Yep, tried that and same result :(

Can I ask what launcher you're using? It may be that the particular "back" functionality you're seeing is unique to your current launcher.

I'm using Nova Launcher, for reference.

Stock metro one that comes with the device.
I also use HAL launcher and same issue. I'll fiddle around a bit more and see what I can do.

On another note, any recommendation for a Saturn emulator?

Thank you.

I tried Oldboy as well and while the lag doesn't seem to be quite as pronounced I still very much feel it. For the sake of comparison I tried out playing the same game in GameYob my DSi XL and the difference was instantly noticeable. The controls were super responsive and I noticed no input lag.

I wonder what this comes down to. Is it an inherent problem with Android or is it something related to this specific hardware, like the having really bad response time for some reason? Might have to get a 3DS for my retro needs, even though I'm not that big a fan of its D-Pad placement.

I just got mine in the mail, pretty excited to get going. Is there a good "get started" guide anywhere? Not even concerned with launchers, just want to find the best emulators possible.

I ordered and received mine last week, but sadly the device wouldn't hold a charge, so I had to send it back.

I've not come across any guides, but I can recommend any of the emulators I've been using on mine. I posted a screenshot showing the names of each one on the previous page of this thread.

Damn, that sucks. I've heard a couple of hardware-issue stories, but hopefully it's not too widespread.

the device is not meant to charge while being used via usb. how did you charge it?

I closed the GPD XD assuming it was in sleep mode, then I used the adapter that came with it to charge it. The weird thing was I when I opened it to check to see how much it had charged an hour later, it didn't show any change to the battery percentage. So I left it plugged in over night and it was dead in the morning. When I pressed the power button it showed the charging icon, but when I held it it the screen showed the no battery icon.

I thought the ePSXe with the new graphics (x2 and x4 - a bit too slow) options look rather good!

For those having problems accessing the menu when you remove the touch screen buttons on the screen, try to hold the menu (3 stripes thingy) button instead of pressing it. Pressing it will bring you to the multi task app selection screen and crash the app. Back button will exit or prompt you to exit the app.. not sure if it's a bug.

Has anyone managed to get moonlight working decently? I have a dual band RT-AC87U router and my shield tablet works lovely on the 5ghz band but I've seen videos of the XD running gamestream over 2.4. No matter what I do, I get awful stuttering, even with dropping the quality to 720p30 and a small mbit/s.

I've put the wifi onto an empty non-conflicting channel but still no dice.

Any tips?

You're not alone. I tried the bundled SNES emulator and SMW was unplayable.
The N64 emulator lags like hell in Conker, but Lylatwars worked fine.

PS1 - Emulation seems great, setup is easy, buttons are mostly good, but your hands aren't gonna like games that use the shoulder buttons a lot. 7/10
GBA - Great emulation, setup is easy, buttons are a-ok. 8/10
PSP - No idea, but I've heard that performance is very up-and-down, depending on the game.

What's the best place to buy one of these from? Kind of interested now, if not just for tinkering around with it.

Also just wondering if anyone's tried emulating Paper Mario on this thing and how well it works.
