Which makes it a regularly deployable attack how? You still have to charge it up. It's not really viable to just sit there spamming them up from an empty bar, and if you do that, you're making the game even more sluggish for yourself.

You don't need to charge it. Once your health is in the yellow you can use a limit break whenever you want. If the option isn't there you can just refresh the command menu to re-roll the RNG until it becomes available. It's possible to get multiple turns in a row that let you use your limit.

Additionally, you can just cast Aura and go ham.

It takes pretty much no effort to get into a state where you can swiftly use limit breaks over and over again.

Still can't believe one of the best games of all-time gets the push it deserves; super happy about this.

Square Enix rebounding from FFXIII so quick.. approaching god-tier era SE again

It may be a bit early to say that considering they haven't released any of these games yet. Or told us how many parts the ff7 remake will be. I'm still staying in the cautiously optimistic camp.

If we're talking about VIII, all you need to do is have your character in the yellow or close to the yellow, and press triangle repeatedly to get your limit break.

Man, I remember getting the game two days before street date (good old '90s), figuring out you could buy Tents, refine them into Curaga and Junction them to Squall and he could limit break nonstop while having higher current HP than Zell/Selphie.

Felt like a boss breaking the game before release date.

The "charge it up" thing is basically pressing triangle a couple of times. Unless you are thinking about VII instead of VIII?

Wish we had a release date for this. Hoping it comes out with this week's iOS games, but that seems way too good to be true.

As I mentioned previously, SE has been releasing this Final Fantasy games about 2 months after their announcement. Look for it in early March.

Wow would be crazy.

I'm considering buying Disgaea 1 next month too.

Two of my most favorite RPGs side by side - crazy.

Sure, but you can't just take the battle load times in a vacuum as a measure of how slow the game is overall. There are a variety of other aspects of the game that may balance things out. IX certainly does not feel like a two-times slower game than VII in the final analysis.

Besides: in a way it's not fair to judge a game on the technological walls it hits, especially when a PC port may well mitigate them.

FF9 feels even slower than it is because there's about 5 seconds of blackness at the start of each battle before the camera even starts spinning around. FF8 battles go right into showing you something. You're not just staring at a black screen. In addition to the slow as hell ATB, the animations are slow. It feels like they're moving in slow motion.

Of course it's fair. That will always be a mark against the original release much like voice acting is for the original RE. It was never acceptable for the battles to be that slow.

Yeah, late Feb/early March sounds good. Then we'll probably hear about X/X-2 HD on PC a few weeks after IX releases for a May/June release.

Huh, I had no idea

Doubt it's enough to make them re-translate any of it, though

Thing is localizations lately have a lot of flavour text in it. The original translation is indeed fine, but a more modern one keeping in tune to the original would be appreciated

This is awesome news but did I miss a previous announcement about VIII? Or are they skipping it?

VIII is already on PC, but they seem to be skipping the mobile port. Probably wanted to get IX PC and mobile released simultaneously so the mobile team is working on IX first, with VIII getting mobile (and maybe PS4) ports afterwards whilst the PC team works on X/X-2.

I wonder if a mobile port of X/X-2 will happen. Most PS2 games are theoretically portable to modern phone level hardware. They've done pretty comprehensive changes for mobile ports (FFIV After Years / FFV / FFVI) as well as having recent porting experience with X/X-2 which should mean the assets and relatively port focused code are available. So it should theoretically be doable.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's possible. I don't know much about modern phone level hardware for games but if they use the Vita version of X/X-2 as a basis they could get something out for mobile.

Games like Implosion show how far mobile can really be pushed.

I dread thinking of shit like chocobo racing on a touchscreen though.

For iPhone anything over the iPhone 5s should handle it, the 5s and Vita have fairly comparable hardware, and by the time it is out I'm sure Apple will have released the 7, which gives them 3-4 very capable phones for it. I'm sure hi-end androids should be able to handle it just as well. It's likely in the cards a few months after the PC release I'd say.

The vita release of Tales of Hearts R has been on it for years and runs great.

Ahh... if only they would use/find the old background assets and use them instead of upscaling the old 2d ones :(
Still good tho, that steiner face on the emulated version looks epic

The opening blackness is a bit long, but I just played FFVII for a bit and the ATB gauge speed is about the same. Maybe ever so slightly faster... but barely if so.

those menus are ugly.

do you think it'll be overlay buttons for smart phone like FF7? i assume they actually made touch buttons not an overlay since the menu has changed.

I hope the interface properly gets redone. I hate the overlay buttons in 7, they are ugly and not easy to use.

Wow if it's 40 bucks.... that's a good one, Square.

And yeah it really is so sad about the mismanagement of all the assets from these pre-rendered FF games. Playing the old Infinity Engine games these days is amazing because the backgrounds are huge, high-res, and can be displayed in all their glory - they look as good as any modern game, really. It sucks that they are basically reduced to just using plain, rasterized images rather than having access to the 3d scenes that produced them....
