Fire Emblem Fates' localization doesn't have the petting minigame

are you fucking serious? Why are people celebrating removing features. This is not acceptable. I don't care how stupid it was, stop trying to dictate what other regions want Nintendo.

Because it's a feature a lot of people didn't want? Not sure what's hard to understand about that.

I feel as if it's something weird enough that people would mention during their review of the game. Potentially turning off people who find the feature weird. Regardless of how small of a feature it is.

Yeah its a leap, but that's the only real reasoning I can think for them to justify the cut.

I genuinely think that it was a mix of this and that the mechanic sucked. Like, I know people's standards drop like a rock when you can touch an anime babe, but it sucked. There wasn't any real lore explanation given to it, its implementation was out of place, and the way it functioned didn't make any sense. It's suppose to be intimate and peaceful but if you don't rub as fast as you can you can't get anywhere.

I don't get why NOA is taking a step forward and even removing features now. It's one thing to edit an offensive scene, but it's another to remove something altogether that didn't really have to be removed.

Here's something I'm a bit concerned about though (spoilers for marriageable characters); can you still marry
Shara
as a female MC and
Niles/Zero
as a male MC? I can live without the face poking, as dumb as I think it was to cut it, but I'll be legitimately upset if that's cut.

Good, I think it just shouldnt exists at all.

If you guys arnt happy about features removed, well this one was far from being a must. I don't feel like petting little girl when there is my girlfriend just beside me.

If you guys want this sort of shit, there is plenty of the Vita.

When I play Fire Emblem, I wanna play a turn based strategy RPG. Not a creepy petting minigame.

Should I be watching amazon and best buy for SE pre-orders being available again due to people raging and cancelling their pre-orders?

I'm relieved. I was considering not getting these games despite really enjoying Awakening entirely because of this minigame.

Who is spending so much time facerubbing anime characters that cutting this "content" should warrant a price reduction?

I can get the censorship concerns to a certain degree, but sometimes people really need to sit back and think about what it is their advocating.

Disappointed, insofar as those are high-quality models/animations that I'm not sure we'll find anywhere else.

Personally, I'd prefer a compromise where we at least get a model viewer to appreciate the 3D Kozaki art.

I think both the S-Rank confessions and face rubbing used the same assets, so it's likely that Treehouse won't remove the graphics entirely.

It remains to be seen what impact this will have in terms of sales. Personally, I'm for the change. The localization effort is addressing some of the concerns I had with what I was seeing from the Japanese version.

But it was completely optional. I'd understand if it were tightly woven into supports, but this was a feature a player could choose to ignore entirely.

I hate to be that guy, but Masashiro Sakurai's point is pretty valid for this situation..

the curious case of the nexus of hardcore gamers cheering for getting less content in a game when it comes over

bonus points for the "well it doesn't belong in fe anyway" argument as if removing content retrospectively changes the mindset the rest of the game was made with anyway

I wonder what else they'll change or remove now. Fuck me, I wish I had a 3ds that could play that poor translation patch.

It would be localization if they replaced it with something of equal value, ie: raising support stats. They're straight-up cutting content and tons of voice acting, in this case.

I see where you're coming from. To me localization means making a game coming from a vastly different culture more "approachable" to people being otherwise alienated by the product. Yes, that can mean to cut content if there's no other way.

You have every right to be pissed about this and not having the choice to just buy the Japanese game and play it on a PAL/US machine should be against the law.

I'm pretty sure we'll be able to play the "complete" version of the game on an emulator in a few years. Someone will take the JP version, insert the localization and tranlsate the remaining text that was in the rubbing minigame.

Not sure if this is possible on an actual 3DS, I'm not up to date with homebrew

But it'll be great

So I take it that everyone in this thread being happy about this change will buy the game in the end? Or will it be like Fatal Frame and nobody buying it in the end.

As said above, NOA's "localization" is on a slippery slope that keeps getting bigger.

Yes, they didn't anything to the actual relationship possibilities themselves. All that happened in that regard was changing the dialogue in a scene with Soleil. Anyone that could be married can still be married, including the same sex options.

The article confirms that this is still a thing.

Have you even played 1-6? None of them are anything like how it is now. The marriage system didn't work anything like it did in Awakening/If, and it was in one game.

People love shipping in Awakening, yes there was waifu bullshit, and let's be real it started with Lyn in Rekka no Ken with Rob ... Marc.

Incest was in 4.

Pedo bait was in 1 in Tiki and Est.

Gameplay was poor in Awakening, but's a return to form in 12.

This is my earnest reply: it signals a further slide into relationship weirdness that I wasn't altogether a fan of in Awakenings. If people are legit bummed about this feature being removed, then I'm not here to pour salt into the wounds. But I'm being dead serious here when I say that the removal of this makes me more interested in the title, as the mere existence of this stuff was creepy and off-putting to me. If it stayed then I would have dealt with it. But I'm glad they're making the change here.

It just seems so inoffensive and derpy that I have a hard time understanding why anyone is happy this is gone (the majority opinion in this thread) or legit pissed this is gone. This seems like such a "nothing" that strong reactions either way profoundly confuse me. Like I'm reading what you are saying and I respect your opinion but the conclusion just feels alien to me. It feels like a continuing trend of opinions on the internet where more and more people either love or hate things rather than just like or dislike. Like now everything "rocks my socks off" or everything is "creepy" or whatever. Like if everything is amazing/gross/whatever than nothing really is and I feel it becomes hard to even talk about things.

Not trying to stifle discussion or disrespect people. I just never got it back when this was revealed to be a thing and I still don't get it now.

I'd be fine with it gone, IF we got new content in its place or a price reduction. This would be like if NA got FFX international and europe got the original release after waiting and charged the same price for it. (note this is exagerated in terms of content but its still content gone)

You could just apply a translation patch to the game and play it that way, note there isnt text when playing that mini-game.

I just hope region lock won't be a thing in future Nintendo platforms. I don't really care for this, but it's kind of alarming how many threads there are recently about localization changes.

Animu face rubbing is the last bastion of free speech though.

If we can't rub faces in Fire Emblem what will they censor next? I'll tell you what: The American Constitution.

How so? Fire Emblem has always been animu as hell.

Bad, genetic Japanese writing doesn't dictate 'animu as hell'. Anime tropes that have popped up in pop culture such as 'mai waifu' and fan service was pretty abscent from the series.

Like I said, bad writing doesn't mean bad tropes.

And just about every game had pedo bait, haha. It's a staple of the series.

Also, the gameplay in Awakening saved the series, not sure what your on about there.

Making Fire Emblem more like old Fire Emblem is my fanservice. And there's nothing wrong with fanservice! Please let me be serviced :p I'm looking forward to more localization changes.

You realize you could've just completely ignored it and played it like "old Fire Emblem" while people who liked the feature could've used it and not affected you at all, right? I can understand if it was mandatory and you didn't want to do it, but it wasn't.

This is extremely disappointing. =/ I understand the complaints about the feature (but, like...just ignore it if you don't like it?), but I think a lot of people fail to realize that for gay individuals like myself, this feature was really nice because, as far as I understood, you could use this "petting" feature on any character, including characters of the same sex as your avatar. This was the only way to have any sort of intimacy with same-sex characters outside of the single male and female characters that you can marry with a same-sex avatar. While it's great that the same-sex marriage is still there, and it's certainly a big step up from Awakening that featured none of it, it's still extremely disappointing that there was even more that we could have had, but of course they cut that out of the localization. =/

Advocating companies not cutting content that is in another version of the game. It may not be good content but that doesn't mean it needs to be taken out. It should be made optional because it's a very slippary slope even if this content being cut is not important to the overall game.

Hack the 3ds, import the japanese game , patch it , have the japanese game with english text and all content in place, be happy :D. Its what i'm gonna do.

How's the English patch? Any way someone would just replace it with the localized script minus the cut content?

You act like all content is equal, and worth having simply because it was made. The feature was always a weird fit for the series, and comes off creepy to a lot of western gamers (who made up over 70% of Awakening's Worldwide audience).

Obviously character/support growth will be re-balanced to reflect the change.

If I thought all content was equal, I would have made more of a fuss about the boob slider and swimsuit changes in XBX.

This is something that affects both the gameplay and character development, with the former potentially being really problematic in Conquest on hard mode. I don't know why you think it's obvious character growth will be rebalanced when there's no indication of that and would force Treehouse to go the extra mile with it when this suggests they aren't willing to do so.

But was the "petting minigame" the only way to see the models at any time?

Honestly, I don't care about the act of petting itself, but I want to be able to look at the models whenever I want.

I'm the guy who started a thread on model viewers in games, you may recall!

So I wish they wouldn't censor the game like this. Rather than cut it altogether, maybe they could modify it so you just talk and don't... uh, touch.
