XCOM 2 Review thread

I am almost certain they will.

I don't think they will, it'll do more harm than good, late ports rarely do well on consoles.

This type of game never had an audience on consoles, the first game undersold, sure, but it got good reception critically, was on PSN+, they needed to use that one to cultivate an audience, and then grow it with the sequel, but they took the easy, safe route of just releasing it on PC, because of that they've burned whatever audience they had on consoles, chucking console players a bone a few years later will mean it'd not sell again, and back up the "doesn't sell well on consoles" narrative the first game had.

i don't think it is a huge loss, its a PC game first and foremost, it is disappointing that 2K weren't in it for the long haul, as its a game series that deserves a massive audience.

Lookling forward to 00.01 on Friday, will be there missing 80% shots until i fall asleep.

I caved and preordered yesterday. I played way too much XCOM:EU/EW over the years, and with how good the game was looking I couldn't resist.

7.5/10? Might as well be 10/10!

...

Probably not the first person to make that joke.

Anyway, scores and reviews look great! Game is gonna devour me wholesale.

My thoughts exactly.

Part of me was kind of nervous that this would turn out to be really good, but maybe more of a detailed expansion like some sequels end up as. Relieved to see its a pretty big sequel according to these reviews.

As any experienced player knows, 75% is basically 100% - guaranteed hit.

This is very good.

Although...

It's a shame. I was one of the people who supported the last game on consoles (bought both Enemy Unknown and Within), but I guess there just weren't enough of us.

I'd like to play XCOM 2, but if you're right, I probably never will.

Any word on technical performance?

IGNs Dan Stapelton mentioned a bit of a struggle maintaining 60fps

"And performance-wise? Let’s just say I’m glad this is a turn-based game, because it can’t hold 60 frames a second even on above-recommended hardware. The problem doesn’t seem to be related to on-screen action, since it’s often most pronounced when my six soldiers are sitting in the Skyranger drop ship on the way to the battle, and less so in the heat of the action itself. The tradeoff for that, of course, is that XCOM 2 usually looks fantastic thanks to extremely detailed character models and textures, expressive animations, and creative creature design. And the ability to blow big holes in buildings, especially when enemies are standing on them, is great."

Hi guys, our review is up as well.

http://www.gry-online.pl/S020.asp?ID=11005 (polish)

I gave it 8,5/10

Gameplay is amazing, my only complaint is that the camera works even worse than before and there's too much similiarty in mechanics/enemies/story compared to previous entries. If you wanted to see some inovations, well.... you won't find it here ;)

Still, great game worth playing!

Omg the drama.....

Just get it on Steam like 5 million other gamers will do.

The XCOM EU is one of the best and most meaningful games you can play.

When your soldiers die, they're gone. ITS OVER. THEY DON'T COME BACK. It's the most brutal punishment you can imagine. you keep on, but your solders don't. you'll play for 10 hours and have a favorite squad assembled who you handpicked, levelled, customized and outfitted and saw grow... and then.. one fucked up mission and it all went to shit.

Don't be a fool and make the mistake I made "this is not my type of game". This is everybodys type of game. There are no people who don't like that, because it's not about what you think it's about. You might think strategy games like this is boring, but XCOM. is intense, and it gets dark really fucking quick.

I really should finish XCOM EU

I fell in love with it but I pussed out after a certain point.

These reviews are making me want the sequel but I have a moral obligation to finish the first.

Firaxis has to be the most consistently good PC developer out there. The only iffy game they put recently was Sid Meyers starships, and that was a mobile game.

Nah, Paradox has them beat. Civ: Beyond Earth is/was pretty terrible and Civ V only got truly great after Brave New World.

Firaxis is a solid no. 2 tho

RPS talked a bit about how the plot is actually very good. I'm curious about that, since the villains and their motivations are exactly the same as they are on EU.

I mean, they still want to genetic engineer some godlike psionic race for whatever reason, right?

I wonder if we will get more background about the aliens themselves.

I predict with 95% chance that the Metacritic score for X-COM 2 will be in the mid 70s.

What?! I missed?! How is this possible?!

Damn it. I told myself I'd wait for controller support but with these scores it's gonna be real hard. I may actually have to sit down at the desk to play this.

lol. Damn at the opening line of the gametrailer review. Something like "one mission on XCOM 2 have more emotion than most games on their entirety".

And I thought I was being hyperbolic on my hype.

yeah I feel like there's no mystery whatsoever as to what the 'avatar project' is, but they have to have a twist in there somewhere. Firaxis isn't exactly known for the narrative aspects of their games, but I'm looking forward to it regardless.

it is THE SAME, trust me. I got deja-vu all the time but still - you are not playing XCOM 2 for the plot.

Calling Beyond Earth terrible is, in my opinion, pretty grossly overstating the problems with the game.

Is it far too military conquest friendly? Sure. Could they have done a lot more with the setting? Probably. But it takes all the good parts from the core of V and repackaged them into an interesting new setting with a much less linear technology tree and a more enjoyable, unit influenced, unit system. There are a lot of good things in Beyond Earth. They absolutely could have done more and it doesn't stand up to Alpha Centauri, but it's a pretty solid title in it's own right.

Vanilla Beyond Earth was a far better day one product than vanilla Civ V. Beyond Earth probably won't see the same level of game changing expansions that V had to repair it unfortunately.

I hate when people take one line out of a review, devoid of context, and then spend ages complaining about the review and saying it's terrible. That EGM review is perfectly fine, and the line about probability is obviously not saying "How can i possible miss a 95% shot".
He criticizes the game for the things that fans enjoy about it (unpredictability of success, scarce resources, perma-death, constant tension leading even to exhaustion). It's not hard for those same fans to discount his opinion if you read the entire review.

I think most casual players don't do enough to mitigate their risks in these games. Yes, there can be snowballing, cascading failures that lead to squad wipes, but it tends to be because you didn't sufficiently account for what would happen if (when) you missed that easy shot. Always have a backup plan. Have a grenade throw in your back pocket. Know where they can move to and shoot from on their turn. Consider what your options are if everything goes wrong, because sometimes it will.

Already had this pre-ordered, but glad to see the reviews are supporting my decision. Really looking forward to Friday. Need to make sure I have everything I need to get done this week finished by Thursday, because I'm going to pick this thing up the moment Best Buy opens and play it all day.

It's such a tough skill to learn, tho. I mean, sometimes you just gotta risk it so whatever, but yeah, most of the times, on EU at least, you could have a backup plan or something like that. But it is a skill that takes not only time to learn, but also require a mindset that is not completely obvious when you are dealing with %s all the time that is to make your own luck.

XCOM looks like a game of luck; until you drill into your head that is not; then it is like you are playing another game altogether.

I'm so happy to see these kind of reviews. It seemed like a game that was as close to a sure thing as I've seen in awhile, but it's reassuring nonetheless. Hopefully the technical issues get worked out not too long in the future.

The last few paragraphs of that PC Games N review seem like something I could see people having an issue with, but to me it's exciting in a way. The timed missions seem like they'll make for tons of interesting personal narrative.

Maaan, I was going to put this off for a bit, between The Witness and Tomb Raider hitting, but not sure I'll be able to stop myself from grabbing it. Loved the last X-Com and this looks to be quite a bit better.

2016 is coming out swinging.

Yeah, you can just watch Beaglerush play for a bit and he'll prove definitively that overall it isn't about luck. I mean he plays on the hardest difficulty modded to be harder and (usually) does fine. Flanking, height advantage and explosives go a long way.

Glad I upgraded my pre-order to the Digital Deluxe edition.

Between this and American Truck Simulator I'm set for months.

I wouldn't be too pessimistic about a console release. If it does well on PC, chances are pretty good it'll get ported to everything eventually, just like the last XCOM.

There might've been budget constraints that made them bet everything on PC as a start.

Holy crap, it looks like it may be everything I wanted that the previous release didn't have @_@

Can't get day one unfortunately, but will definitely get when I can.

Well I think the idea is that you can easily become more invested in the high stakes the game has, especially if you have your soldiers for awhile-losing a vet sucks.

At least based on the first game, I would say I agree with the statement, even if it does come across as hyperbolic when saying it out loud.

well shit I passed on The Witness, mo money mo problems right, knowing this was coming and boy am I happy its turned out well. Friday can't come soon enough. Note I will buy The Witness soon as I can scrape the pennies together. What a start to the year.

Jake Solomon said:
XCOM 2 will offer other improvements as well, including physics-based rendering, more visually impressive destruction, and procedurally-generated maps. "To do that, we had to use all of our studio expertise... and our expertise here is PC," Solomon said. "That's our home, and that's where we're really comfortable."

The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 should have the power to run the game, but developing for multiple platforms simultaneously just isn't something Firaxis can do. And even if it did come to those platforms, it would almost certainly be without support for mods, one of the games biggest selling points. "We're certainly not opposed to [a console release]," Solomon said, "but I can assure [you] that's something we're not even discussing yet."

I expect it could happen a ways down the road. Once controller support pops up on PC it shouldn't be that hard to find someone to port it.
