Anyone gone from New 3DS XL down to New 3DS and regretted it?

I'm considering moving from 3DS XL to 2DS.

I prioritise comfort over screen size and the DS design has always hurt my hands, 2DS looks very comfortable due to the button placement. I'd also make $50.

Even if I am unhappy with the downgrade, I only really have the system for Pokemon, so it is justified.

Indeed. Had the new Red XL at launch but bought the animal crossing bundle to have the white hotness. I really missed the XL size screens after a week or so and had to go back. Sold the animal crossing bundle on ebay.

Waiting for the NX now. (Please be backwards compatible and have 3D!!!!)

Life is too short for regrets, OP.

Specifically the life of the 3DS. There's probably going to be a new Nintendo handheld coming out this year or early next year and then you won't care about your tiny 3DS any more.

I can say that the 2DS is incredibly comfortable compared to the N3DSXL.

The 2DS was my first 3DS unit and had it for almost a year until Gamestop decided to give me $100 credit for my 2DS that I paid $70 for from Nintendo :x

I had no plans on getting rid of my 2DS, but I figured I'd never be able to sell it for that much when I do, so traded up for a N3DSXL when I lost faith that the smaller new unit would make it stateside. Now I've gotten used to the large screens, so most likely won't downgrade. What's funnier than getting more credit then what I originally spent is right after Gamestop's promo for $100 credit for any 3DS unit, Nintendo went and dropped the new 2DS price from $130 to $100. What timing.

blue OG 3DS -> blue XL -> XL(had to get pokemon XY XL in blue) -> n3DS XL(mon hun) -> n3DS(HHD)

I always found OG 3DS to be a bit uncomfortable but I didn't upgrade to XL till I played my GF's vita for a bit and then I was like THIS 3DS IS TINY. I was actually in the process of thinking about getting the purple OG 3DS. Then Nintendo announced the XL and It was perfect timing. Never thought of going back.

By the Time Japan got n3DS/LL I was set on getting the LL while gf wanted regular saying faceplates are worth it.
Then came time for direct in america, I was finally convinced I wanted the small one.. The pixel density was getting to me, the weight was annoying on long play sessions, and the mid-tier screen size of the n3DS regular seemed perfect.
OK rumors... if It is only n3DS XL and not n3DS I will ONLY get it if its a limited edition. Nintendo must have known this and slapped me with 2 LE's. FINE I SAID. Bought monster hunter 3DS XL. I didn't have a choice afterall, wanted to upgrade and there was a LE + no regular.

Fast forward to n3DS eventual announcement in the states. Happily bought HHD bundle at launch finally. Imported a Xenoblade Chronicles faceplate to go with it (I like animal crossing but I also wanted this one)

ANYWAYS.
TL;DR while I miss the bigger screen sizes, almost everything is better for me on the n3DS(regular). I even had an IPS n3DS XL. But come on.. how often are you not looking at your handheld straight on? and the crushed blacks kinda sucked.

So no. do not regret going from n3DS XL to n3DS. (candy buttons ftw)

Not with how ugly the fat pixels looked on XL.
It does mean, however, I can't really draw so well on painting apps which is a real bummer.

I was actually thinking about getting a n3DS XL recently, but I was looking at it and saw that the power button and game card slot are now on the bottom, which I hadn't noticed before. That kind of seems like a bad place for them considering I usually need to support my old 3DS XL at the bottom and I don't want to end up accidentally hitting the off button or putting pressure on the game cart. Also not too pleased with the stylus being on the bottom either, that seems a little awkward.

I know the system runs a lot better and a bunch of other benefits, but this kinda ruins it for me. I need to replace my current 3DS because it creaks a lot after I dropped it recently, but I'm not so sure now if I should buy a n3DS or maybe if I should just get another old model...

They actually stick in a good amount.
Also the power button needs to be held for like 2 seconds before you get a popup on the screen. hold for a couple more seconds and it does a force shutdown (similar to all 3DS's)
Also power button is ignored completely while n3DS is closed.

Never had issues even tapping slightly either one.
Game cartridge on bottom as a whole is a little weird but you get used to it (sorta like xbox one cases putting disc on wrong side).
Only thing I do have a problem with is having sltylus on bottom instead of coming out of the side.

I went from a 3DS XL to a regular n3DS and don't regret it one bit. I loved the DSi XL but aside from the iffy build quality the bigger screens on the 3DS XL made polygon based games look worse. I have no experience with the n3DS XL tho.

I considered making the downsized upgrade, but I barely ever touch my 3DS as it is. It would be a waste of money.

Between the weight, the pixel density, and the uncomfortable d-pad (big hands), I actually think the 2DS would be the best choice for me.

I forgot about the XL volume placement, that shouldn't have passed testing. So shit.

Went from Old XL to the regular N3DS. No regrets. It's big enough, easier to travel with and I like my Super Mario Maker cover plate.

There's no risk of turning the power off. Even if you managed to tap the power button in some magical way it won't turn off since it needs to be held for a second.

Card slot in front makes it more accessible to switch cards. Not that it was a huge issue in the other models anyway.

When is the succesor launching? At what price? Will it be able to play the topic creator 3DS collection? Does it supports stereo 3D? Will the worthwhile 3DS games that are available to play right now spontaneously combust once the successor is announced?

Thanks for the info, you really lucked out getting given an extra 30 bucks!

I found an as new boxed 2DS for the equivalent of $45 USD, which is a bargain in my mind.
Should be a good comfortable Pokemon machine :)

I think 2DS screen size is fine for RPG's, its only really the 3d games like Mario Land which you want a larger screen for, because you can see the game world more easily to do platforming and such.

Hmmm. Maybe if I got the smaller n3DS instead of the XL I wouldn't need to hold it up from the bottom for support because it weighs less...

Also, is the build quality of the normal sized n3DS's better than the XL? My old XL has always been kind of shitty and has had a really annoying creaking plastic sound on the backplate and the d pad was pretty loose. I heard the normal ones don't have this issue though, or at least not as bad. Is that true from other peoples experience?

I do really like the bigger screen though. Ugh, hate feeling so conflicted with this.

Maybe I should just save my money and wait for the NX lol

This is my problem as well. Went from an OG 3ds to the XL. I massively prefer the XL to the OG.

Now I want a New 3ds and I have both the Pokemon edition regular preordered and the Fire Emblem XL. Both come out on the same day too, but I don't know which to go.

I'm a bigger Pokemon fan than Fire Emblem (been playing the main pokemon series for 20 years), but I prefer the larger system/screen.

Regardless it doesn't change the fact that the 3DS will take a backseat to whatever succeeds it. Can OP still play and enjoy their 3DS and games? Of course. But if OP gets whatever the new handheld will be, it's only natural that they'd spend less time playing and thinking about the old system. Especially if that new system is backwards compatible, but even if it isn't.

I got a 3DS XL in 2012, then a 2DS and finally an OG 3DS in the end of 2013. I like the 2DS the best because I can spread my fingers out on it more. If I were to get a new one, I'd get a new regular one. I like the image quality better on smaller systems.

I went from OG 3DS to NEW 3DS and I regretted it after I played with a friend's NEW XL. The main screen is so big that it sucks you in to the game better than the NEW 3DS. The grip is also a bit better for my hands.

The main problem is that it's really heavy and the weight distribution puts extra stress on your hands. It's the heaviest handheld Nintendo has made and your hands have to get used to holding it for long periods of time.

I'm strongly considering doing this. In fact, if anyone wants to trade to the XL from the smaller PM me. XL just a bit too big for my normal/smallish hands.

I went from an OG 3ds to an XL n3ds and I really can't see myself going back. I wonder though: does the tighter density of the smaller n3ds screen help in games like Xenoblade where the far camera viewpoint turns player models into a mess of pixels?

I imported the N3DS on launch day, and bought an NXL the day it was released in NA a few months later. Even though the NA XNL had a shitload more games and my entire backlog, I never used it. Sold it for an NA N3DS as soon as it was available. Never looked back.

I think the main thing is, if you're going for Portablity .. Go with the standard 3DS. If you play at home, still get the standard, or if you really want a huge glossy low PPI chunk of thing in your pocket, go with the NXL.

Man I do NOT understand the 2DS. My mother owns one, it's the most uncomfortable thing I've ever held. Everyone who loves that machine is drunk....including my mother!!!

I'm in America to start off. I have the Majora's Mask New 3DS XL and am considering selling it and getting a New 3DS bundle (either just grabbing the happy home designer one now or waiting for the pokemon one) and grabbing some japanese cover plates. I'm also going to Japan in April so could probably pick some up then.

The main reason I want to move to the regular size as opposed to the XL is them sweet cover plates. I'm a sucker for customization.

But I'm worried I might regret downgrading in size (I've have man hands and the XL fits pretty decently, though it does feel a bit heavy). For example, I had an iPhone 6+, then sold it and got a 6s, regretted the smaller size, returned it and got a 6s+, lol. Obviously this isn't the exact same situation... but it's similar.

I know this is an ultimate first world problem, but I'm just wondering if anyone went from n3DS XL down to n3DS and was either happy with the decision or regretted it?

Thanks for the help!

I have bad both.

There really are pros and cons, to each - but it's a 'you pick your battles', type of conundrum.

Let's start with the cons of the N3DSXL:

The hinge on the N3DSXL is pretty terrible. I exchanged mine and even had 2 different N3DSXL's in red (see the IPS/TN thread); but the hinge no matter how tight it is - it will loosen and become flappy.

The outer paint, on the surface near the buttons begins to look like permanent oil stains and it really is wearing down of the paint - almost like polishing the areas. It looks terrible - no matter how clean you keep your hands.

Now for N3DSXL pros:

The screen may not be as crisp (image quality), but it sure is vivid, if you end up with an IPS. The 3D is simply immersive on the large screen and it really is striking. There are differences between IPS and TN, as well (luck of draw). The IPS has the best incarnation of the 3D feature; you get less ghosting, because it's not as washed out as TN. It also holds the 3D effect better, because IPS has a wider angle than TN, so you get less breaking of the 3D with minute movement. The TN screen has the screen door/ wave effect, that was apparent on the old XL - which comes across with movement - something the IPS does not have.
The con of the IPS: it crushes blacks and makes darker games or areas impossible to see or discern.

The outside of the XL is glossy, which means it will collect fingerprints and oils.
---

The N3DS:

The NA unit build quality is simply immaculate. The hinge is rock solid (think DSLite solid), which gives it the most rigid resistance of any in the 3DS family - absolutely how they all should have been and weren't. It really is amazing to have 0 give, on a clamshell. The buttons feel much better and more responsive than the XL (clicky vs mushy). Overall, the interior of the inside doesn't wear down around the buttons, like the XL does.

Cover plates: This is an amazing feature and really makes the system as unique as you want it to be. I haven't felt a better textured handheld than a N3DS festooned with the wood plates. These plates totally give the handheld a dry, soft and natural texture that simply feels amazing.

The N3DS only comes equipped with a TN screen. This is a blessing and curse. The size lends to great image quality; however, the TN seems to leave a smearing/ghostlike response, especially with camera movements in games like MH4U. Something not apparent or experienced on the IPS XL. The TN also lends to more ghosting in dark scenes, leaving a prevelent double image, in 3D. The small TN also doesn't give as immersive or as pronounced 3D effect as an IPS XL. The 3D on the smaller system feels lackluster in comparison. It also is riddled by the shimmery screen/waves that come across the screen in 3D, that plagues the old XL.

Weight and size: The weight is absolutely perfect. It doesn't strain the wrists, and still feels substantial. The NXL feels heavy and leaden, in comparison. The size, though can make it feel awkward to normal adult hands. It can be hard to have a comfortable position to hold it, whereas the NXL just feels relaxing - if far less portable, due to the size trade off.

- overall, I prefer neither because they're so mismatched.

If the XL had the build quality and cover plates, with an interior that didn't become shiny over time - it'd be the hands down winner - only if equipped with and IPS - those who don't have the IPS NXL and still aren't sold on 3D, until you try the stability of the IPS 3D and its colors - you never will.

The N3DS, if it had the IPS of the XL and a little more space to hold, for comfort - it would be the decisive victor. As is, you get great pros: Faceplate customization, insanely tight build quality that rivals Apple's own and a great feeling and truly portable handheld, with a great image in comparison to NXL - you lose the immersion of phenomenal 3D (size and TN) and 3D that holds without ghosting or shifting.

Pick your poison.

Ive got the n3dsxl and love it but am getting that pokemon small n3ds.
Want my faceplates.

Yeah I feel like I'm just gonna end up getting the pokemon n3DS and have it side by side with my Majora's Mask n3DS XL and just decide to either sell my XL or return my n3DS. :/

Please, just get the money and be patient and don't sell anything. You will be happy.

Nope, moved from n3dsxl to n3ds, perfectly happy. The n is still larger than the OG, and the XL was just too big to take around with me easily.

I went from the New XL to the new standard size and don't regret it at all. 100% easier to hold for me and I love the cover plate options.

I went from a normal XL to a n3DS and regret it. It's too small. I got convinced by the cover plates and the better pixel density.. but meh. Playing on the XL was just a better experience.
I'll probably get a new 3DS XL in the future once I can find a decent deal.

If you are inconvinienced, I would happily buy the system from you.

I have an n3DS and the Zelda n3DSXL - the plan was to go between them depending on the game but Nintendos moronic account management put an end to that pretty quick.

I played them both for a few weeks trying to decide which one to keep and settled on the n3DS. It was a pretty easy decision. The screen is still a good size, it's more pocketable, it's less top-heavy in the hands and the dpi is so much better.

I also have a 2DS. Fwiw I think it's the most comfortable of the range by far but no 3D. :(

I was the other way around. Started with OG 3DS, then got the n3DS XL and hated it. I finished Zelda on it and then sold it. The pixel density made everything look pretty bad, in my opinion. I also found my hands cramped up a lot.

I've pre-ordered the Pokemon R/B n3DS for Fire Emblem Fates. Can't wait to get the smaller form factor back.

I just went from the first 3DS XL I've owned since October of 2013 to a regular New 3DS and now the XL seems too large for its own good.

Wasn't a fan of the colored face buttons at first but they grew on me.

Well, I ordered the happy home designer bundle of the n3DS to compare side by side with my n3DS XL. Seems to be the only way to make the choice, lol. Wish the n3DSs were on display in some stores in the US, but oh well. I'll either return my n3DS or sell my XL.

I had a n3DS XL at home I hadn't touched in months. Some of that was there were no games I wanted, other was that the thing is just too big. I have small hands, and while the screen size of the XL is awesome (and I had one of the IPS screens), the ergonomics, weight, and build quality are kinda meh. Additionally, upgrading from the 3DS XL to the n3DS XL was not a mind blowing upgrade, look or feel wise.

My hands hurt after playing a while, my wrists would bother me, and it just wasn't comfortable. And this is coming from a dude that powerlifts and does obstacle course races, my grip and wrists are pretty strong.

On Friday I stopped in at Gamestop and picked up their last HHD Bundle n3DS. With Fire Emblem on the horizon, and being interested in the small n3DS since it was announced, I knew it was time. Sweet Zombie Jesus, it feels amazing in your hand. The weight and size is perfect. The build quality is so freaking on point. It looks amazing when you open it and those Super Famicom buttons are just screaming "TOUCH US! LET'S HAVE SO MUCH FUN TOGETHER!" The Pixel density, IMO, makes up for any shortfalls the size and not being IPS bring. I don't see any difference in the 3D effect, but admittedly it has been a while since I played anything on my XL.

And then there are the cover plates. Holy fuck yes. No more "Man, I wish I had that limited edition 3DS, mine is so boring." feeling. Just go on Amazon, order an imported plate, and BOOM you have a unique n3DS. I just got the Fire Emblem cover yesterday and it's gorgeous, even if it is glossy. I have the wooden Mario cover coming today, which will probably be my day to day plate if it fees as good as everyone claims. I also want a bunch more that I'll eventually pick up.

This is, to me, the hands down definitive version of the 3DS. I'm 100% back into the platform, buying three games since Friday and playing it almost non-stop. Can't wait for FE!

Just got in my n3DS. Did a system transfer. It's indeed tiny, but it's a pretty awesome little device. And the build quality is fantastic. Gonna try it out for a week to make up my mind. One thing I noticed is that my Persona Q 3DS case is huge for it. It slides around a bunch inside the case. What do people use for cases for the regular sized n3DS?

It's really nice, but you'll have to find someone to order it for you since it doesn't ship to US from Amazon.jp (or you can find it somewhere else probably with a markup).

N3DS Hori hard pouch (blue): http://www.play-asia.com/slim-hard-pouch-for-new-3ds-blue/13/708777

They went up on the blue one. I got mine for $9.99 the other day. Now it's $14.99. The black one actually went down in price from when I ordered. It was $19.99.

In case anyone is wondering, after a little while with my n3DS, I'm completely in love with it and am selling my Majora's Mask n3DS XL. I really love the bigger screens on the XL, but I'm a big fan of the form factor and faceplates of the regular size.

Consequently, if anyone has interesting in a MM 3DS XL, hit me up! ;)

really want a n3ds, is it a bad reason to get one purely for vc games lol?

I bought the ambassador and the zelda plates from NoA earlier and was just planning on getting a regular n3DS next month or so. Unfortunate to see that some people still think it's too small. Glad to see at least OP likes the form a little more.

I already have the Majora's Mask n3DSXL, ALBW 3DSXL, and a plain ol' red og3DS.

edit: you know what I hate? I bought the digital version of New Leaf. I've played it for hundreds of hours and it's been transferred twice now, but I wish I just had my save on the cartridge to make it easier if I wanted to play it on another system.

I had an XL as my first 3DS then I went to the N3DS and picked up a N3DS XL thinking I'd be happier with that. A resounding nope. Glossy finish is awful, the smaller model can actually be grabbed securely instead of balancing the console on your fingers. The shoulder buttons are perfectly usable without introducing any discomfort resting under my first and second digits. In addition you've got the higher dpi and the XL can't use my baller Boo faceplate.

Unless you've got Shaq hands the N3DS will be more comfortable to use. I'm 6'2 if that adds anything

I had an OG 3ds, then an XL, and now I'm on the n3ds.

I think it has the perfect size to portability ratio, and I'm a sucker for the face plates. For me it's a much better experience than the XL, though that's obviously a personal preference.

Having used both the n3ds and the n3ds XL, I feel like the build quality, and obviously the pixel density, make for a better product.
