NeoGAF's struggle with the meaning of "minimalism"

As an alternative to bloated box arts.

We have an entire thread of (excellent) fan made ones, but what are some official ones that got it right?

You could say most SMT covers, but this remains my highlight:

I'm also a fan of this one:

Can't post it right now but the gravity rush remastered box art is very minimalistic.

Came here to post just this. Best minimalist cover in a long while.

The one here in the UK isn't as good as they decided to keep the background artwork rather than plain white, but is still undeniably gorgeous:

Was it Olly Moss who did this?

if only they could've fucked off with all those dumb ass logos, though.

At least I know the German version had a reversible cover without any logos.

Considering the flashy and stylish Shinkawa art featured on the box arts of the first three MGS games, these box arts always seemed remarkably minimalistic to me.

No bloated action. No distracting background or scenery. No edgy monsters crawling everywhere. Just our hero standing calm, reflecting on his mission ahead and ready to kick ass. You can just see the determination on his face in the visor.

Oh, also this PAL release:

All time favourite.

Ah yes, the God-tier box art. Love it.

Also, the equal glorious EU box of Majora's Mask with a similar idea:

Then there's also the entire Mario & Luigi RPG series:

A minimalism master class.

Ye Olly Moss worked on that one.

I'm from Portugal and my copy does have a reversible cover with a cleaned up version of the art, it's pretty cool.

Also yay, first post!

PAL Final Fantasy for sure, the american ones are terrible.

And yeah, half the covers in this thread are not minimalistic at all lol.

Say what you will about the game but the Japanese box art was a stroke of genius. Here's the kicker: the red stuff is actually a cardboard sleeve that you can remove to reveal Samus's full face. And it's also a reversible cover that features her younger version on one side and her older version's face so you can switch them around as you like.

Disney Interactive was really into minimalist boxart in november 2010. the tangled game that came out alongisde Epic Mickey also has character renders on a white background. i dont know why of all things this completely useless trivia has stuck with me but there you go.

I wish the collectors edition didnt have the paint running off the sides
