I think the NTSC vs PAL covers demonstrate the difference pretty well,

I bought ICO based on how amazing the PAL cover art was, it's a got a pretty evocative charm to it. I don't think I'd have bothered if I'd if I'd seen the NTSC version first.

The artstyle GBA games are probably the best examples of minimalism in this thread... I guess when I think of minimalism my mind instantly thinks "something that looks like it could be the cover of a Kompakt records album circa 2007". Like aforementioned artstyle games or this:

Here is a much better example than what's been posted in this thread. Problem is, it's not official. There currently are NO minimalist offical boxarts out there.

These are glorious. Love the BioShock one in particular.
