A game so amazing it spoils others games

Played through Witcher 3 (loved it) and recently tried playing rise of the tomb raider

I can see it is a well made game but the dialogue, story, world. It just feels stupid and not believable at all. Bad cutscenes move into cover based shoot outs. Exploration is more like a tutorial (ohh look here a "hidden" tomb). Design just lacks heart but ticks boxes.

I would have been fine with most of this stuff. But witcher just raised the bar in so many ways i cannot enjoy rotr. Dont even get me started on fallout 4, witcher made me loose all interest in bethesdas games.

This happen to anyone else?

The Last of Us: The Thread

For a period of time I had to take a break from games after beating TLoU because I found everything to be a bit lackluster.

The same happened with Bloodborne.

Same game (Witcher 3), different ruin.

Played Fallout 4 right after the Witcher 3 DLC, and in so many fundamental ways it felt like a game from a different century.

Planescape and BG2 when it come to cRPG, they were released 16 years ago and yet nothing still come close to that level.

DMC4.

I compare every other Character Action game to it, and not one has made me enjoy it's gameplay as much as I do DMC4's.

Most platformers feel and play horribly compared to Mario. The only games close (maybe even equal in a few titles) are some of the DK Country titles.

Funny because for me Bloodborne spoiled my enjoyment of TW3.
The Last of Us definitely deserves mention, and I know it's too early, but I see a lot of people already mentioning The Division even when it's not out yet (just based on the beta alone).

Unreal Tournament still makes every modern AAA effort at FPS look laughable to me, and that game's 17 years old this year.

WoW still shits over other hotkey based MMOs.

Shovel Knight is so great it makes me not want to play Mega Man... I know I'll probably get murdered for that one.

Can't really go back and play too many older JRPG's after Xenoblade Chronicles.

I would appreciate 3D World more if it wasn't for Galaxy.

The Division. Literally can't play anything else in anticipation for the final release. Thankfully we're getting an open beta before then.

Glad to see other heavy hitters like the Soulsborne games have already been mentioned, too.

I had the opposite happen to me with Undertale. It rekindled my interest in SHMUPs and RPGs and I started playing more games after beating it.

Xenoblade Chronicles X

As a gamer that thrives on intricate game systems, I haven't played a game that refused to dumb itself down for an audience at this level for a long time.

It's truly a Gamer's game.

I love when people post a "thing: the thread" reply and then the thread totally is not that thing.
lol right
anyway this thread looks like it's heading towards a big circlejerk about the few favorite games hah
F zero GX is a good pick, can't play other "fast racers" after this, it just does everything right on top of having graphics that actually aged pretty well
Same for mario kart, other games of the same genre just feel bland and unsatisfying

Pancakes

hot, steaming, as melted butter slips into the cracks, drizzled with sticky sweet syrup OH GOD
Witcher 3 makes me hate other RPGs.

Nier is no other. It stole my heart after that fourth ending.

For me it was MGSV. I know the game gets tons of hate but gameplay-wise I haven't played anything so satisfying in a long while.

Spec Ops: The Line made me roll my eyes for a while when playing other shooter games.

The Last of Us also made a lot of games worse than they were when it came out.

Pokemon Silver at release. No other game occupied my mind in the same way for a long, long time. Just completely blew me away as a kid, it epitomised the feeling of surprise and adventure upon discovering that the world is a lot bigger than you think.

Terranigma back in my childhood, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest V and recently The Witcher 3, for quite a while (XCOM 2 has broken the spell). These games immediately come to mind, particularly Terranigma and CT, even in recent years when I replayed them that feeling came back. I'm keeping my sanity about TW3 because Blood and Wine is still to come, but after that expansion it's gonna be tough.

Persona 4 Golden, for me. Hahaha. Just an amazing story and after finishing it.... i felt kinda empty inside? Idk. Kinda like finishing a really good book.

The facial animations from LA Noire. Makes every other game since look crap. Why is this tech not used by everyone?
