RE2 is still the first game I think of when it comes to the series' music - Masami Ueda is always fantastic. 5 and Code Veronica have their share of great themes as well; the Darkside Chronicles orchestrations of the latter are some of the best individual pieces in the series. The Revelations choral pieces stood out as well.

Also, RE4 including half the P.N.03 soundtrack was a surprisingly good fit. Character-specific Mercenaries themes really have to come back.

Oh dammit. I've been tricked into playing Resident Evil 4. Guess I should finally get into the Resident Evil series. REmake and Zero a good place to start? I've been quite tempted by the collection now it's got a physical edition.

The Origins collection is a good place to start. I started the series late with Resident Evil 4, but went back and played REmake, then Zero afterward. Since those are the first in the series, and the REmake is basically the best version of RE1 to play, it's a good place to start.

i've been posting in the ps1 thread, been playing psx resident evil one: directors cut. specifically the non dual shock version double disc case which comes was a demo of res evil 2, it retains the great original OST unlike the green label greatest hits version released digitally on psn. (that terrible remixed OST just destroys the mood of the gm).

been playing advanced mode w/ chris w/o the extra ammo option. it's probably been the hardest experience i've had in a long time. been so used to doing the under 3 hours runs w/ the original that it really screws you up big time in this mode.

i've died about 18 times the last two nights... never died this often ever.

And we are done.

Olympic gold mental gymnastics in that post.

"No qualifiers" followed by qualifiers, excuses and ludicrous claims that have no basis in fact and are head canon, like the RE0/RE2 lab claim. It's clearly meant to be the same lab, is just one of the many geography errors in the series, like the RPD parking lot ramp that extends upwards and into the road Leon and Claire arrived on, which didn't have a massive slope leading downwards on it, or the magic elevator in general. RE0 geography was especially bad.

It is the same lab, but it's not "canon" in 0. Rebecca and Enrico never set foot in it. It's an easter egg that exists in a vacuum. I never denied geography issues, but those arise from level design, not writing. Same disconnect as killing Zombies with chest shots. It's also why they're quite liberal with level design in remakes and retellings, because it's irrelevant to the plot.

People happily argued that Operation Raccoon City is canon even though it completely changes not only the layout, but the size of Raccoon City. They didn't care about the discrepancies because they don't actually matter or affect the story. The plot is the plot, gameplay is gameplay and level design is level design. There is rarely going to be 100% congruence between them in any video game. Dante in Devil May Cry can survive being impaled and does on at least three occasions including being shot in the face, but during gameplay he is able to die. That is not a plot hole, nor is the lack of bathrooms in these games because the levels are designed to achieve certain things, one of which is not realism. The average player doesn't notice let alone care about the lack of bathrooms, just as nobody cares that none of the characters eat, shit or piss.

You've still yet to give a single example of a plot hole.

Replace Zero with RE2 or RE3 and you've got it. And Since REmake is a, well, remake of the original, it's just as easy to say that the first three are the best.

After that, it's varying degrees of lowered expectations until RE4.

It's all good stuff. 'Main Theme', which rounds off the credits of each scenario is really thrilling, one of my favourite pieces in the entire franchise.

When you listen it on its own, it really does sound great, but to be honest, I find RE6 OST pretty forgettable. I remember most of the music from older titles (mainly the PSX ones, CV, Outbreak and RE5), but I can barely remember anything from RE6 beside the menu music and Mercenaries OST.

Glad people agree!

I like RE6's music, but think it's not mentioned enough since, honestly, the whole RE series has some really good music. RE6 is somewhere in the middle overall with me, but some of the tracks are fantastic in it (and there's a LOT of music in RE6).

From my personal position, I think Resident Evil Outbreak, Darkside Chronicles, Code Veronica, and Revelations 1 have the best soundtracks in the series (for my taste). Resident Evil 2 and REmake are close.

Yeah I think you're right about this.RE is a storied series when it comes to music in general.

Just played through Episode 1 of Revelations 2. It's really pretty decent. I don't really care for the setting though. I miss the flavor text from examining the surroundings. Maybe if I had more time with the characters from Terra Save the opening would have impacted me more.

If you liked episode 1 pretty well, then you can rest assured that the rest of the game gets significantly better from here on out. The setting gets more interesting as well. The prison was my least favorite environment in the game.

Yeah, it's a lot closer to what I enjoy about Resident Evil. The whole chapter felt like a prologue. I certainly expect the environments to improve.

I still consider this one of my most memorable soundtracks. At least when I think back at REmake (which is my favorite RE)

https://youtu.be/VpNSsZw9t7Y

This still gives me chills!

Though I think all of them have pretty good/great scores, with the exception of RE1 director's cut.

I'm really hoping Outbreak HD rumors are true, I have my severe doubts, but I'd buy a few copies at the very least if that was to ever become a thing.

I'm in the general opinion too that the first episode of Revelations 2 is the weakest one, it's not bad but episodes 2, 3, & 4 were definitely much better. I will say the Terra Save characters do play a bit of a role shortly after the start of episode 2, and the locations get more interesting than the prison (though I kind of liked the forest also).

A remake/reboot of Outbreak would be amazing. Make it an MMO-lite/Survival Horror hybrid with a create-a-character and have everyone try and survive in Raccoon CIty (or a new location).

Yeah the forest is pretty great. It's really open, dark, and foggy which makes for pretty tense and freaky combat against the revenants especially on hard when you have to worry about ammo as well.

Aw shit, now I want to replay RER2

I'm still replaying RE5 and REmake, and was thinking about RER1 again, and RE4 HD

I was also thinking about giving RE2 and RE3 a proper playthrough

These fucking games, man

Let us know what you think of Episode 2! I felt like the game progressively got better and better. By the time I reached one of the BEST ENDINGS EVAR I recognized how well the title handles the episodic format. It just keeps topping itself.

Yo Trigger, remember this:

When you get to the end of Claire's Chapter 3...

...and you're pinned, and there's a QTE to reach for your gun on the ground...

...switch to Moira, and crawl toward the gun, and shoot the gun with Moira

This will put on the right path for the GOOD ending. And trust me — you want the good ending!

Man the mishandling on that part. Especially considering that alot of reviewers missed that part entirely and let the bad ending sour their impressions of the game was just embarrassing for everyone.

Agreed. The good ending is so good that I wish they just forced it on everyone instead of letting people miss the prompt and get the bad ending.

YES. I wish I had known this on my first playthrough.

Getting the good ending changed my opinion of the game dramatically. It was such a relief.

I'm not fond of replaying games so quickly after my first playthrough, but I had to do that for Rev 2 all because of that one scene.

I like watching my friends beat RE classic for me.

Currently he beat Zero and going through the REmake. REmake is vastly superior to Zero in almost everything. Everything about Zero screams side-project or amateur.

I'm still on the train in Zero, but yeah, it definitely feels like a more shallow experience. Still, taken on its own merits, and treated as a lighthearted adventure, it's pretty fun. If nothing else, it's worth playing for the cozy environment. Dat contrast between warm train interiors and cold rainy exteriors.

Also, Becky looks good in track shorts.

I think Zero is fun. It's just that it's a highly qualified fun. It's impossible to know what you will need where, so the item management is really hard on the first playthrough. It's almost impossible to avoid a lot of backtracking without experience.

You could say the same about REmake, but the boxes actually mitigate this to a great degree. Item management in RE0 is more like playing "real survival" mode in REmake... which, yeah, newcomers aren't going to enjoy that.

I'm actually thinking I'll use a guide if I continue playing Zero, just so I can know the optimal places to drop items.

Yeah I'm really enjoying Zero, sure its not as good as RE 1,2 and 3 but that doesn't make it bad, those games are just particularly great. I'm almost finished with it and a little sad that its almost over.

Zero I think particularly suffers next to remake. On the surface it's a really beautiful game but if you play them next to each other there is just so much more care to the mansion layout, artistic design, camera angles, enemy placement, etc in RE1. But if you haven't had a traditional RE experience in a while then Zero can kind of scratch that itch. Itchy. Tasty.

Yeah REmake is unquestionably superior in pretty much every way. That being said, I'm almost done with 0 and it's nowhere near as bad as people say. I think it's a pretty good game, barring some obvious issues. Even the inventory system wouldn't be much of an issue on replays though. It's a solid classic RE title, and the coop gives it a unique flavor and is pretty cool when it works well (saving your partner while your partner saves you in a room full of zombies is legit), and it's got the wonderful gothic art style of REmake, but has even more animated elements in the backgrounds making them seem very lively.

It's better than Code Veronica X. But people will keep defending that one too the death I guess.

But those are really broad similarities, and you're phrasing it as such because the actual minute-to-minute experiences differ dramatically.

Again, other than third person action against zombies, and I guess upgrading weapons, RE shares nothing with TLoU. The former can take inspiration moving forward, sure, but its still pretty odd to characterize it as a successful reiteration on the RE formula.
First off, the series of Resident Evil was THE zombie stimulator in gaming for years, and any game with third person action against zombies would be inherently compared to Resident Evil in some way.

Regarding TLoU, missing their similarities feels like an inability to see the forest for the trees. The gameplay loop and minute to minute experience consists of walking through desolate hallways or alleys, fearful of what may pop out from around the corner, running away or killing it carefully to conserve sparse ammo.

Their respective tones are different because they're attempting to convey totally different messages. Gameplay elements differ with two main distinctions. TLoU emphasis humanity as an enemy, and RE is almost exclusively infected dead. I wouldn't trust Capcom to successfully pull that off with any success, so I'd love for them to stick with zombies. The other is the level design. One is a hellish cross country trek, with the other being a mostly localised to a central area. The changing locations found in TLoU don't invalidate the design of survival nor horror elements, so it's a non issue that doesn't dismiss the comparison of the two and their moment to moment experiences. The RE series doesn't even contain it's modern entries to one locale, anymore.

The intrinsic focus on survival and horror elements found in TLoS is simply more fitting for RE games than what have been found in that series for a decade. The difficulty in understanding this goes to show just how far RE has diverged from its core tenets.

All this talk of the series' music makes me happy. I love RE music so, so much. Capcom in general is amazing when it comes to music in their games.*

*Someone's gonna post the farting trumpets.

Also, RE4 including half the P.N.03 soundtrack was a surprisingly good fit. Character-specific Mercenaries themes really have to come back.
What do you mean about the P.N.03 bit? What music from RE4 comes from it? I'm very curious.

Themes: I'd go one step further and say song selection needs to be implemented. Mercs 3D was a step in the right direction in regards to music variety. While we couldn't pick and choose, every stage past the tutorials had different music, both old and new. I thought this was great.

The thing that got me, though, was that my favorite new theme was used ONLY in the tutorials, and the tutorials were so short. It's a damn shame, but I remedied that by modding it into RE6 as my Mercs theme <3

Behold: The Path for Fight. SO FUCKING GOOD!

Other new tracks I liked:

Ghost on the Blue. Muted tension. I just love how it sounds, especially near the end.

Subspecies It's so dramatic, especially towards the end. Such a great track.

Contamination. Sounds nothing like its namesake suggests and, in fact, sounds very upbeat/pleasant. It's still good for killing Illuminados with, though.

A Warrior Filled with Hope. You'll know once you hear it.

I'm not opposed to character themes, though, if it means more tracks.

Speaking of Mercs 3D, it is such a phenomenal game. If anyone ever wants to play, let me know!

RE6 Mercs > Mercs 3D > RE5 Mercs > RE4 Mercs for me in terms of "best"ness, but I still play the top 3, no problem.

Has it ever been made clear which scenario is considered canon for RE2? Leon A/Claire B or Claire A/Leon B?

I personally want to believe Claire A/Leon B, cause Leon B is so good and much better compared to Leon A for me.

Claire A/Leon B is considered canon. Mostly due to Leon A/Claire B making the least amount of sense. I mean Ada falls off a bridge in Leon A only for her to show up not more then 15 minutes later in Claire B's scenario to pass her a rocket launcher.
There's also the weird oddity of Claire somehow completely missing the Aligator boss which Leon ends up fighting minutes later.

Also Darkside Chronicles went the Leon B route as well.
