iOS 9: More than meets the eye

I just hope you people with iPad Pros never drop it or at least have AppleCare+ on it. $599 accidental damage or out-of-warranty replacement cost

I hate that cellular settings says I've used 1.2GB of "Documents and Settings" without clarifying what that is. I've used most of my data already for the month and half of it was for unknown documents and shit. iCloud doesn't backup on cellular and I've looked through the list but I don't know what is taking up that usage. This is ridiculous.

So are you also having trouble selecting and copying text from Wikipedia in Safari?
Selecting a single word might work out, but adjusting the selection results the complete upper part of the article being selected. Even if I somehow end up selecting the right thing though, pressing copy doesn't actually copy it.

It's weird. Has been happening for months now, only on Wikipedia as far as I have experienced it.

Just tried that out with iOS 9.2.1 phone and no problem selecting and copying texts on Wikipedia

It's been dodgy in iOS 9 for me. It requires a lot more precision than it used to when selecting part of a paragraph.

No love for mini 2 :(?

I think the Mini 2 & 3 are almost the same in terms of specs (outside of Touch ID in the latter), so it should be okay to upgrade. That said, if you're happy with the installed OS, maybe stick with it until a feature makes the upgrade more necessary.

bah, wasn't able to pull the trigger on that Mini 3 sale yet. Might as well wait for the Air 3 release, see how much the Air 2 is going for, maybe go from there.

It occurred to me today that complaining about some (keyword, some) of the stock apps on the iPhone is equivalent to complaining about the service apps (Dictionary, Image Capture, Preview, etc.) on OS X.

Not that I don't understand the problem.

I usually just stick them in the folder marked for Apple apps

The Notes app is really good though. Replaced Evernote with Notes. Reminders and Calendar aren't as useful as Fantastical. News is good enough that I stopped using Flipboard though. Can definitely be better, but I keep it around. The other stuff isn't as good.

I just added a new contact and starting texting. Not the notification icon won't disappear unless I delete the text. Anybody know a solution? Already deleted restarted and deleted and readded the contact.

Edit: now it's all my texts

I'd clear messages app out of memory (double click home button, swipe up on message app), then do the hard reboot. See if it helps.

Anyone else having issues with iOS forgetting the privacy settings for all apps after a reboot of the phone?

which privacy settings?

You know, much to my surprise, I think my favorite part of iOS has become the HealthKit stuff. It's just so seamless. My Apple Watch counts steps and calories burned, as well as exercises that I do. My Withings scale tracks my weight, and LoseIt tracks my calorie intake and nutrition breakdown. Each app feeds into each other without me doing anything and it's all centralized in Health where I can see what's going on. And with the Watch I get those damn three rings that are easy to keep track of

I gotta say, I've gone from "couldn't care less" to "one of the pillars keeping me in this ecosystem"

I really don't understand how stuff like this happens. After adding support for Slide Over and/or Split View, do they not test it? Do they just flip a switch in Xcode and call it a day? I seriously don't understand.

It's happened to me too frequently on my iPhone 6S Plus. I'll be using it for weeks/months with no problems, but then suddenly the OS will forget about every single permission I've granted for every single app. Even Google Maps will ask me to grant Location permissions again. Facebook will ask for Photos access again. Everything is just gone and I need to manually bring everything back.

Am I missing something or did they remove the ability to star songs in the latest public beta? Actually, I haven't updated to the version released today so it's not actually the latest beta but the question still stands.

I'm confused by the redesign of the Health app in 9.3, in year view it's no longer accumulating for each month as before (the bar would start from 0 when a new month hit, now the bar is comparable with previous months). So is it comparing the same period in each month?

From time to time, I have this weird issue with the progress slider of the default video player. After dragging the knob for about one centimeter, it stops, as if I had lifted my finger. It's annoying.

playerj2slt.gif

The only time I ever really see this is with embedded/linked videos on a page and it appears to me that it just isn't able to stream or download quickly enough. I usually chalk it up to a problem with the connection or the stream itself.

that picture looks like it's still the bottom row. is that not the case anymore? everything below the airdrop toggle still looks like the same positioning.

This is still happening. I can't remember the last time dragging actually worked without this issue. Did it ever work? I really can't remember.

In any case, it doesn't have anything to do with the video or the connection: When I expand the video to fullscreen, dragging works perfectly fine.

This has started happening to me too. I thought maybe it had to do with some content blocker I have installed, but I guess not. So annoying.

Ah, my problem is worst. I can't even see the video when I have the video embed enabled. It's pretty annoying. I never had this problem with android chrome. I wonder what's wrong with safari?

I'm absolutely clueless. And I can't find anything about this issue online. There's just too much noise in the search results. I've tried many different combinations of iOS/iPad/Safari/Youtube/Video Player/Seek/Knob/Drag and so on, but so far I found literally nothing.

yeah, that's interesting. this is a phone or ipad? Do you have a link to one of the threads where it's happening? I'd like to see if mine is messed up too.

iPad. It's happening with every embedded YouTube video, not only on GAF. Try these: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1187408
Strangely enough, videos from other sources (e.g. CNN) seem to be fine.

Same thing happens to me. I think you can't go past the buffered video.

Why wouldn't you be able to?
But as I mentioned, seeking works perfectly fine if you open the video in fullscreen. And even if the video is fully buffered, I still can't seek further than ~1cm.

so I've never paid for text messages as I've always used Google Voice since having a smartphone. I had an Android for 4 years, and then switched to an iPhone almost two years ago.

I've messed around with iMessage a bit as all my friends have iPhones, but I never was actually charged anything through Verizon.

This month, I notice I have $12 in overcharges for text messages. It has to be something with iMessage I guess... I know it wasn't working through my Mac recently so I disabled it and then activated it again. I'm guessing using iMessage is counting towards Verizon text messages now (not sure why now but never before...).

is there a way to ONLY use iMessage linked to my email and for it to have nothing to do with my phone number?

Verizon isn't able to touch iMessages, for real. That's an Apple-only thing. It uses data, not SMS.

But if you want to, on your devices you can go to Settings->Messages->Send and Receive and customize it there. On your Mac would be Messages->Preferences

No, Verizon is not counting iMessages towards their texts. You sure you didn't send out any green bubbles this month? I'd also check to make sure that "Send as SMS" is checked off in iOS, so if for some reason an iMessage doesn't go through it doesn't then send as an SMS message

Send and Receive has my real phone number listed (and grayed out so I can't remove it) plus my email address.

Send as SMS is turned off (though I turned off iMessage and now just turned it back on, so maybe it was on before for some reason?).

well I'm talking to Verizon and what it looks like to them as I was in an iMessage group chat where someone else wasn't using iMessage and sent images which I was then charged for.

edit: actually, most likely, someone else I was talking to that uses iMessage has "Send as SMS" turned on and they sent me a picture message and it wasn't able to be sent as an iMessage so it was sent as an SMS to me and I got pinged for $0.25 per message.

Yep, that can happen. If someone else sends an SMS to your phone you get charged just the same

If you're worried about it I know on the Verizon account page you can put a text message block on your number. iMessage will just come through, but no SMS/MMS

Anyone else know how I can fix this issue?

Noticed it while browsing Notifications in Settings.

Shows an app with no name in the title.

Last time someone posted one of these around here it was Boom Beach that was the culprit. Does entering it in that menu show any version info or anything that can help you deduce what it is?

Nope no version or any information other than to change the notification settings.

Don't have any games installed on my device either.
