From Gematsu:

About the Story

In the near future, advanced technological developments have allowed one’s mental state and disposition to be quantified and profiled.

For the public’s welfare, all emotions and thoughts are documented and managed by the Sibyl System. This system measures the quality of each person’s life by what is known as the PsychoPass, a reading of an individual’s mind. Broken down into two main components, the PsychoPass is the system’s omniscient eyes of justice. One of these components is the Hue, which is a visual representation of the Psycho-Pass that conveys a person’s stress level. The other is the Crime Coefficient, which is a numerical value that represents a person’s criminal capacity. This number determines whether an individual requires enforcement by the detectives of the Public Safety Bureau. Detectives are divided into two groups: Enforcers, who are tasked with the investigation of crimes and the apprehension of criminals, and Inspectors, who are charged with managing the Enforcers.

About the Game

The player can choose between two new detectives assigned to the Criminal Investigation Department’s Division 1; Nadeshiko Kugatachi, a calm and serious Inspector whose memories were wiped, and Takuma Tsurugi, a hot-headed Enforcer who is searching for his missing childhood friend.

You must decide the best course of action for each given situation, but regardless of the hierarchy that separates Inspector from Enforcer, players must be mindful that every decision has its own repercussions. With an intricate decision-making system, Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness offers a twisted plot and compelling cases, providing a number of different endings. Ultimately, depending on the choices made, Hues may deteriorate beyond recovery, cases may be left unsolved, and the game may end quicker than expected.

Can't find an answer online...
Is this an adaptation of the series? A side-story? Sequel? Do I need prior Psycho Pass knowledge to understand it, or is it more of a "prior knowledge just = understanding fun references" dealio?

Should be a new story, non anime characters are featured prominently in that visual and trailer. No Makishima would suggest its not an adaptation. A certain character being alive also implies its not a sequel.

I want to give this a chance out of morbid curiosity.

Gotta watch the anime first... For better or worse.

Uggggh, NISA, seriously?
Oh well, maybe they're not translating it? iirc the asian english XB1 version was supposed to come out so maybe Mages. did it?

Yeah, I'd like to know if I should watch the anime or stay away from it.
If you plan to play the game, maybe. For context, I guess.

Oh nice, will get the vita version ! Season 1 of the anime was nice, Season 2 on the other hand... make me wonder how good the game story is.

Japanese audio only is a disappointment. I watched Physcho Pass in English so it's going to be weird hearing other voices. I had the same issue with Stein's Gate where it was weird. Watching the anime again in English it felt much better.

I had no idea the second season of Psycho Pass was so maligned. I've yet to watch it. I'm curious now.

Not exactly a fix, but turning off the voices in S;G helped for me. When I read the text the voices I was used to came naturally.

Hmm very interested in this, surprised by the amount of distaste for Season 2 as I really quite liked it despite disliking some of the choices they made (a feeling I have with most anime at one point or another within a series). In particular I liked the idea of people
frozen into inaction through a combination of being so unfamiliar with violence as to be unsure how to react and the fear of what reacting might do to their own Psycho Pass
and how they played with that.

Edit: Is it the violence in S02 that folks dislike so much? To be honest I found some of the scenes pretty disturbing personally
especially the scene with the older man in the clinic beating cowering people to death one by one.
but it didn't stop me from thinking it a worthy successor to S01.

So does this happen alongside Season 1? Or is it a retelling of Season 1?

from the wiki
The game takes place during the time period depicted in the first six episodes of Psycho-Pass. Nitroplus creates an original story with Gen Urobuchi providing the plan and scenario supervision. The setting of the game changes from the heart of a large city (as in the anime) to a remote island.

Three new characters are presented: Inspector Nadeshiko Kugatachi and Enforcer Takuma Tsurugi who face off against a new enemy, Alpha. Characters from the Division 1 police team of the Public Safety Bureau's Criminal Investigation Division return.

Any impressions from those who have played it?
From Gematsu:
Sounds great. Reading that reminds me of how much I love Psycho Pass.
So I should watch season 1 to play the game in order to understand the story, or I just could if I wanted to?
Do. I don't know if it is needed but you will certainly get more enjoyment. It's on Netflix as well as random streaming sites. It's a great show so you should watch it even if you don't plan on playing the VN. Hopefully a Japanese speaker can provide us with more specific info.

Watch season 1, watch season 1, anyone interested in playing this please watch season 1. You can stop after that, season 2 is completely skippable pointless bullshit.

I definitely did not see this announcement coming, will buy on Vita for sure.

^ It should be on Netflix, given that I watched it there. Could be limited between regions, though.

v Oh wow well that's shady and shitty

I'm curious what people hated about Season 2. Use spoiler tags when necessary.

I didn't hate it, I just found it less compelling.

The villain isn't very good, and a lot of the mystery of the Sybil system is gone. Most of the new characters aren't very interesting either, at least compared to the first season's batch. I would totally watch more, just not as good as the first season.

My only problem with this game is that akane won't be as cool as she was after "that" certain point in the first season and throught the second one.

It will be a shame to see her act clueless and so
throughly braincwashed by the system

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
TM needs to get their asses in gear when it comes to localizing these types of things. Its ridiculous how you can have every kind of media localized of your franchise besides the source material. I would love to pay you guys money for this kind of material, why make me resort to unofficial hacks and shit? Its not as if Realta nua is objectionable

This was announced to have an English localization a long time ago, but it's interesting to learn that NISA will be the one handling it. I don't care at all about Psychopass, but this gives me some hope that NISA might be interested in localizing other VN/ADVs - such as perhaps ones from their parent company? My unrealistic but not totally impossible dream is a Steam port of Infinite Loop.

Yeah, I'd like to know if I should watch the anime or stay away from it.

I only played a few hours of Mandatory Happiness on the Xbox and stopped because the vita version got announced. Pretty sure it tells a different story then the anime.

You don't need to watch the Anime, but you probably should if you want to get the most out of the story. I watched season 1 and really liked it. It's an entertaining, stylish anime similar to Minority Report with some pretty interesting ideas about technology.

edit: you can get season1 for $15(SD) 23(HD) on itunes, that's how i watched it.

Reading on this game, it seems the PS4/PSV ports aren't out in Japan yet, they come out on 3/24. Right now, it's only available on Xbox One in Japan. So basically, that XBO version was made only for Japan. Kind of crazy.

Interesting I always saw her as having a
begrudging acceptance of the system
rather than being clueless. I can see the criticisms of the new team though I guess I enjoyed Akane's character enough that I was willing to give them a pass.

Season 2 is definitely not on Netflix in Ireland, I even signed up for Funimation streaming for the 10 minutes it took me to discover everything was IP region locked :(

So this is just more of an interactive story than an actual game? Tried to look up gameplay videos, seemed like they were all cutscenes.

I just watched season 1 of Psycho Pass. I liked it. I still have to watch season 2. I think Funination is releasing the Psycho Pass movie next month in North America.

Chances of localisation? They've got to be moderately high I'd imagine.

Glad I was right in the end. I've wanted to play this for a while now, especially after getting a taste for standard visual novel games with Steins;Gate.

Also really glad it's getting a physical release and the original Japanese dub. A perfect situation.
