PlayStation TV (Vita TV) officially discontinued in Japan

A good idea that was completely mismanaged.

Oh well, I did get some use out of it playing RPGs without cramping my hand.

What was the point of restricting compatibility with certain titles? Is it just another region locking lol Japan thing?

To make sure people didn't bitch if they played Street vs Juggleken and opened the title menu and it didn't work or let you back out because the entire fucking menu for that section was touch-screen enabled despite being able to be controller worked on the PS3 version.

Bravo Capcom. Bravo Sony. For forcing touch-screen gimmicks where there didn't need to be.

The point is, there are incompatible titles for a region while they work in another region.
Not only Vita games but also PSP ones (Portable Ops is compatible in EU but not in US if I remember correctly).

They should just unlock every titles, and let the players decide if they want to play the game or not. Also touch menus can be emulated with a DS4.

The device was worth getting on clearance once the whitelist patch was applied. Since two of the main games I got it for need that (Ys and Wipeout 2048) mine has been offline since 3.55 came out.

Still worth it in the end for the few games I did get for it.

What is the whitelist patch?

Sorry, I am fairly new to the PSTV when I picked it up earlier this year on clearance.

RIP. Though i Still dont understand why so many people have faith in this

Me in that thread:
Well damn. I may actually buy this instead of PS Vita, but no touchscreen worries me.
Actually I want this as PS One and PSP box more than anything.

Ended up buying PS Vita exactly because the touchscreen issue limits the compatibility after all. PS Vita did end up being PS One and PSP box.

It was basically a trick to unlock all Vita and PSP titles on TV.
With that, you could play even blacklisted games, but Sony fixed it after some days.

My my how opinions have changed on the PSVita TV.

It was doomed to fail from the start with a lot of games lacking PSVTV support, no internal storage, etc. I wonder how much time is left for it in NA or EU.

I think it was a decent idea but it would have had to be there at launch in 2012/2013 and supported all games plus Netflix. As it was, it was bad at everything it did and supported less services and less games than a Vita or PSP.

So if I have not update to 3.55 yet, and I able to use this patch? Or am I forced to 3.55 no matter what?

I know people who don't own vitas and want vitas. I offer them to use my PS TV which I have never used with a 4 gb memory card for free for any games they want. The issue is- they won't even buy their own ps tv at $25. They'll buy a vita at $80 though!

A device is less exciting when it's the model that plays only a portion of a console's library.

Well, Japan was the biggest market, maybe Sony will just silently kill it in other countries without a statement like they did in Japan. I mean, in Italy is already almost impossible find a PSTV: Gamestop had it on sale for 20€ since October 2015, they were doing bundles gifting TV with a PS4 purchase and so on. Now TV is out of stock on GS site.

Any firmware from 3.20 (Which is what the PSTV shipped with) to 3.52 can apply it through a bug in the e-mail program. 3.55 and above fix that, so if your patch gets reset, it can't be re-applied.

Incredibly Naive
Count me on the bandwagon who thought this would save vita. I thought it would appeal as a media device that also played games. It was a super cheap remote play/psnow/vita with access to indies and all your psn purchase. Everything was handled the worst way humanly possible unfortunately.

I don't think it's about region locking. Vita/PS TV are supposed to be region free and a list to block incompatible games isn't necessarily a bad idea since not all games were made with PS TV in mind. But even games that work perfectly are sometimes blocked as well.
I don't think there's a point. It's just handled very poorly by Sony. Which can be said about the device in general as well.

And I still don't get what they were thinking with restricting the device to a single account.
It was already annoying and pointless on the Vita. But when they shifted advertising it primarily as a remote play device to stream from PS4, which allows multiple accounts it made no sense to not fix this. Did they expect people to buy multiple PS TVs just for that?

Hope we get some native firmware hacks soon, it would be the best emulator box
I hope so, too. Vita could really shine once it's no longer held back by Sony.

Well, its a half-baked Vita with lack of support for a lot of older Vita games......of course it wasn't going to do well with how Sony doesn't like advertising the Vita.

It is a shame to hear that they are discontinuing it in Japan....would of thought that the US/EU branches would halt production first honestly.

Considering how cheap Vita/PS TV's are, hopefully people can get them now before prices rise up and stuff.

Really I think the most important function (and most overlooked) is remote play. I use it from my work 50 miles away and it works flawlessly and I have a shitty 5mbs connection at work.

I also use a second one in my bedroom where I have a smaller tv to remote play to when I'm chilling in bed or if I set my kids up to play something in there so I can use my media room.

For even its launch price of $99 I've felt it was pretty worth it.

The idea and the product are/were great. Sony botched it big time.

It's a shame. I would've bought one if it had Netflix and good game compability for sure.

It took me a long time to come around to enjoying mine, but I actually really like it now. It's essential for me as a Vita lover even though I still greatly prefer playing on a handheld 99% of the time. My issues with it are probably different than most people's.

I originally bought one, but I found out Celceta was only whitelisted for the USA and not the EU.

Just said "fuck it" and got a Vita instead.

Most Vita games are compatible, I'm not even sure that 10% of the library is unavailable. And if Netflix was a system seller for you then I don't think that you were that interested in it in the first place.

Who says they haven't? Try even finding the product on Sony.com or Playstation.com without using the search bar.

I would be very surprised if they are actually producing more units.

It was a good idea Vita TV, just so poorly executed. UK version especially, the compatibility of games is pathetic.
It was never a good idea. Here's what could have worked.

- Have HDMI output with Vita @ launch
- Support DS3/4 connection via blutooth
- Device is a hybrid portable, console, media player

It didn't have a target audience. It's a poor streaming device due to the lack of services supported and it's a poor gaming device due to the poor compatibility for Vita games.

It should have been a Roku x Playstation with wide ranging streaming support and the ability to play most Vita games (along with PSP and PS1 games). It's biggest selling point seems to be PS4 remote play.

That's too bad. Not really surprised though. I really like mine, but that's mostly because it's a nice way to play all my PSP games on the big screen using comfy controls. Not to mention the only few Vita games I cared about were thankfully compatible.

Yep. Like most things Vita most retailers have already put their Vita sections on Clearance, including the Sony online store. I'm sure there is no intent in ordering more PSTV's at this point.

I bought one about a year or so ago at $40 with the DS3, Lego Movie Game, and a 4GB card. Figured a new DS and extra memory card were worth grabbing one. My Wal Mart has the DS3 Bundle for $50 trying to get rid of them.

Probably soon in the US too. I wonder how cheap they'll get this holiday? Probably get one free with every PS4 purchase at this point.

Is there many places that still have them? I think Sony sold off a bunch on their online store cheap a few months back.

Well there are still a lot out there in retail. At least where I live in LA. Fry's, BB, GS.
I already have 2, a Japanese one and US one. If they get to be like $20 I might buy a couple more.

Did anyone buy this?

If so, why?

to be able to play some Vita games on a big screen. Also PSP. But I'm a collector too.

Wow at Duckroll's post. I get being somewhat excited for it considering the Vita set low expectations for sales in the first place, so it could have potentially added a non-negligeable amount of sales, but there was no way this was going to be a huge game changer.

Doesn't the Vita TV allows for you to play your PS4 games on any extra monitor/TV in your house? Sounds worth it for an accessory for your PS4. If I don't want to buy another PS4 I could just use this. Correct? Of course I would not be able to play both at the same time since this streams a feed.

Still mad that ethernet PS4 to ethernet PSTV remote play is broken. Goes out through the internet instead of staying on the internal network. Wifi PS4 to wifi PSTV stays on the internal network. I was hoping they'd fix it, but this doesn't give me much hope.

I would not be shocked if the Vita TV is valuable in the future for speedrunners. It plays PS1 and PSP games, allowing you to direct video capture. The PS1 games allow you to force faster disc read speeds using the fast disc load too.

I bought mine for $30 cad a year ago. It's still in the box since I just play on my Vita, but I always have the option. lol

The PSP's fast disc speed is faster and you can capture it just as fine.
