Cuphead is going to be boss rush only? | Dev: There are platforming levels!

I wasn't following the development of the game much, because i wanted to avoid spoilers. But i just realized that the game doesn't have any "normal" levels footage. And after some reading here and there, i found no sign of any mention of normal levels and that it's just a full game boss rush mode.

If that's true, well, there goes my hype for this game as i was hoping for a Metal Slug type of game.

Anyone knows more details?

Nope nope. Cuphead also has traditional side-scrolling platforming levels, we just haven't showed any of them to the public yet!
So it's all good!

Yeah, this has been known for a long time now.

And yeah, learning that pretty much killed my interest in the game, too.

It's also not very fun. Visuals are incredible, but it can't support boring gameplay. At least from my impressions playing it at fanexpo.

Not all bosses. There will be platforming levels too. Seems like it was a reason why the game got pushed to this year (was originally going to launch last year).

Well, that looks good. So now i wonder how good the levels/bosses ratio will be and how good the levels will turn out. I mean, if the main feature was the bosses that is.

Maybe wait to see what kind of scenarios the boss fights take place in before writing it off. If it's all bosses they presumably have some ideas about how to make them more interesting than just "shoot till die"

edit: disinterest in boss battles is crazy to me

Even if it does release with only bosses, what's wrong with that? Cutting out the filler, I say. Right to the main event in most side scrolling shooters.

Shadow of the Colossus, Titan Souls, Jotun. They were all sufficient.

When is this game coming out?

when I heard this game was a boss rush only I was really turned off but I probably wont care at all if this game doesn't come out this year.

Cool, didn't know this now bad traditional side scrolling levels. The game immediately caught my eye when it was first shown awhile back, excited to get to finally play it this year.

Heh, I know the feeling. "Instead of focusing on making 20 really awesome things, please stretch your resources to make segments that reuses assets and designs more!"

I understand the love for stages and their design and skills, but I actually found it very refreshing to hear a small studio with an excessively beautiful artstyle was going to dedicated all their resources to FOCUS on something. Instead of trying to be a broad product for everyone right off the bat.

I understand people like levels as well, but the outrage over the idea of a game being a boss-only affair is absolute madness. It's not like we haven't had fantastic games that are just boss-only affairs before.

Not only does it look amazing, you guys should hear what it sounds like. The sound compliments the visuals in every way. There is going to be some platforming, I just hope it's not a let down. I only got to play the boss battles.

Tell me about it.

C'mon, let's be honest. Most the development time is spent cashing the checks and taking naps. Maybe some doodling here and there.

I'm all for boss rush only with something like this but I welcome the added platforming well enough. I'm just personally hoping for things that make repeated sessions interesting as well (and something beyond a harder difficulty just meaning the bosses sponge more and the little cup and mugs take more damage). Some sort of quirks to them or something would be neat.

Titan Soul and Shadow of the Colossus were mostly just bosses and those were just fine.

I mean, encounters are encounters, I don't understand how people are letting semantics turn them off here. It could be like a full stage in length or not, it could be paced perfectly or not, it could have a lot of variety. People seem to conflate structure with genre or content a lot nowadays.

All of the bosses have new attacks, new patterns, and in some cases, totally new forms depending on which difficulty you play them on. Some have tweaks, some have fairly major additions.

Adding higher boss health doesn't actually make the bosses harder, just longer. So we don't do that.

Think of it this way: how would you make a Mario 4 level harder? You can't just give the enemies more health.

Yes, it's a lot of work.

what hyperbole

I suppose this is better than that guy who complained that Cuphead's art was being "wasted" by being used in an action game, though.

Not wasted by being used in an action game, wasted by being used in what is reportedly an exceptionally difficult game.

It's not.

And there will be easy mode.

And in co op, you can save your partner by catching his ghost before it floats out of the screen, giving you a lot of chances.

And you have infinite lives.

It's a game that respects you as a player, when you win, it's because you overcame an obstacle yourself (or you and a friend).

I would consider myself an average player. I beat modern games on normal, I can beat Contra 3 but I can't beat Contra HC. I can beat Cuphead with some work.
