The lack of "The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me" is fucking criminal. They have the two worse Brand New albums on the list but not their best one?

Putting the pop-punk Brand New record and not the better (and actually emo) Devil and God or Daisy says anything that needs to be said about this list really.

Personally I'd bump #9 and #10 a lot lower. Neither of those albums are quintessential in my mind.

Really? Because I don't really think of Emo when I hear the song Buddy Holly. That seems like a bit of stretch to me.

Also, does this mean that "Emo" is like a thing again?

It's been a thing again for a few years now.

I think the list is being handled from the view of which albums shaped or guided the genre. I remember when Brand New first started playing around and the impact of that album was immediate.

Wait, The Get Up Kids Four Minute Mile is on the list instead of Something To Write Home About

That's just objectively wrong. And it should be top 5.

Don't worry, you'll always be on my Top 40 Emo Albums of All-Time list, Idle Will Kill by Osker.

Hell yeah.

*internet fist bump*

This list is absolute garbage and really what I expected from a major media outlet on anything related to Emo.

Paramore (not emo) beating Algernon Cadwallader. REALLY?

MCR's Black Parade is not on the list ? Dafuck lol

Not emo

interesting opinion and kinda shows how nebulous the label is -- in my opinion Brand New stops being emo at Devil and God and fully enters "alt rock" by Daisy so choosing Deja makes the most sense. shrug!

The entire time I was scrolling down the list I'm thinking "Where's SDRE? Where's SDRE? Oh, there they are."

Woo. SDRE taking their rightful place at number one.

SDRE #1? All is right in the world.

This is the most positive takeaway from this list.

If there is ANYONE posting in this thread that has listened to any of this music but has not listened to Diary, you need to make that priority #1.

You think, right now, Devil And God has less impact than Favourite Weapon?

There are bands now that pretty much copy their formula on that record (I'm looking at you Citizen).

This is a bad list apart from the genre classics (that are hard to get wrong).

Really loose definition of the word emo but it's an okay list.

No The Hotelier or World Is A Beautiful place don't make it very credible, just to mention a few.

Rolling Store really isn't a place to go for emo music anyway.

EDIT: Also, no Devil and God but Favorite Weapon? Makes no sense.

EDIT2: The more I think about this list the more I hate it. Everything post 00's they have here isn't even emo. They forgot the most important emo bands right now instead put stuff like Paramore, Panic, FOB or My Chemical Romance. Ugh.
That's not quite true, somehow IIOI and Algernon Cadwallader got in at 38 and 32
Expected to see Alkaline Trio in the top 5, not even on the entire list. Weezer? Coheed? Garbage list is garbage.
Alk3 have always been very very firmly placed in pop-punk.
Don't worry, you'll always be on my Top 40 Emo Albums of All-Time list, Idle Will Kill by Osker.

I'd call it pop-punk but that is definitely a rad album *thumbs up*

>10. My Chemical Romance, 'Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge' (2004)
>The World is a Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid to Die missing from the list

Wellllll, Your Favorite Weapon pretty much defined that Long Island sound right?

Devil and God and Daisy are totally emo records. It's just Jesse alternating between screaming/singing about everything is awful over heavy distortion. I don't know how that isn't emo.

But, even so, Your Favourite Weapon is as pure of a pop-punk record as it can be.

I love how despite emo kind of going away whenever it comes up there's a bunch of people arguing about what is/isn't emo. It feels like 2004 again

Yeah! Paramore is way too low! Riot! should be at number 1 because it's the bestest album of all time ;)

The record is a pretty straightforward pop-punk record in a time when everyone was doing pop-punk. It was also pretty niche.

Maybe it defined something but I'm not seeing it. I wouldn't put it above Devil and God anyway.

And I love that record btw.

using the words, "very very" and "firmly" when talking about sub genres of sub genres of music is a fools errand. I disagree, but we will never get past agreeing to disagree. Alkaline Trio aside, it is a shitty list imo, even with the most stringent definitions of emo.

That's because emo was just butchered by media. This list is really like making a Top 40 Rap Albums and putting Anthrax on there.

Actual emo bands are bigger than ever, btw, holmes. The emo revival is real.

Just last year Harmlessness was probably one of the best albums released.

I mean the problem is mostly just that in the mid-late 90s is was pretty well defined what was emo, but as the 00's rolled around emo started seeping into half dozen other genres that sounded nothing alike and as long as you were singing about chicks and romance you got caught under the umbrella term. That's mostly why nothing on this list offends me. Some of it was after my time, but I'm sure to the kids out there that bopped to Panic at the Disco albums that was an important, seminal album to them... I guess.

I read the title as "Rolling Stones ranks the top 40 emo albums of all-time" and I'm cracking up at the thought of Keef listening to any of that.

Pretty much.

Plenty of good emo records coming out every year. Actual emo records, not "Panic At The Disco emo".

They really butchered that term.

Is The Cure no longer considered "emo" anymore? I'm kind of flabbergasted they aren't on that list.

Yea seriously. Half their discography should be on this list. Looks like they just focused on the whiny soft pop "punk" stuff.

If i remember correctly, when Weezer first broke big, the emo label was used quite a bit with them.

Totally agree about Infinity On High though, it's a much more interesting album. Less popular because it's more complex. (I sound like a douche)

IOH is probably my least favorite of their first 4 albums. Looking back Folie is my favorite album, I feel like they grew up with that one and Patrick's voice really shows some range. FUCT has the anthems and I can see why it made this list
. Although I can listen to the first 4 albums on shuffle still to this day and not skip a song.

Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness Coheed certainly was.

Yeah, when you do a self-insert album into your giant sci-fi epic about how your now wife (before they were married) cheated on you, and every song is basically about how it fucked you up, i'd say it fits.

Then again the album also has a talking demon bike. So ya know, not totally the same

FUTCT and IOH are the 3rd and 4th best FOB albums.

I could never really get into either of those albums. They're not bad by any means, but I only like the odd one or two songs. My wife would agree with you though.

Originally I thought the same way, but the more I listened to it the more I love IOH. Can definitely see what you mean though.

How is Pinkerton emo but Black parade isn't?

Pinkerton and Black Parade are nothing alike.

Black parade is a mainstream rock record that has tons of stadium rock influences with a bunch of guys in costumes. Pinkerton is an awkward dude talking about his awkwardness over weird rock in the most personal way possible.

They don't relate at all. And one is emo and the other isn't.

I've never seen the Cure classified as Emo. Post-Punk or Goth sure. Emo always makes me think of Rites of Spring, Embrace, Jawbreaker or anything on the Dischord Records label. I guess it mutated from there but I never really followed it that much. A lot of the bands on the list seem more like Pop-Punk to me and I always thought of Coheed as more Prog Rock.

Suddenly I feel 16 year-old again, being horribly love-sick for the first time in my life. I can't listen to half of these bands anymore without feeling slightly embarrassed by my past me.

Time for me to dust off the iPod. I will revisit IOH. Which will lead to me listening to Folie a few times.
which will most certainly result in me playing Headfirst Slide into Cooperstown on a bad bet on repeat.
