So many space games

Elite Dangerous or Star Citizen would be similar to that. Where the latter is aimed to achieve (and go further) than what freelancer was aiming.

Thanks. I will change my seven years old PC when the VR battle will be over (I guess we'll see a winner quickly in 2016). I was looking for Elite, SC will never be done.. :(

The successful resurgence of a long dormant genre like this can only mean one thing:

Arcade racers are coming back next! I want the real Burnout 4!
It's already happening. Distance, GRIP, Drift Stage, Krautscape, Road Redemption, 90s Arcade Racer, Drive Drive Drive, Drive Any Track

And after Dangerous Golf, the ex-Criterion guys want to make a Burnout 3 spiritual successor

My wife loves this type of thing but I find it difficult to like most space stuff. Perhaps it's the fact that it all seems a bit samey to me. I loved Mass Effect, but I was watching my wife play something where you just fly through space and basically look for resources and it made me tired. Space RPG's are rad though, I just can't get into the space exploration or space dogfighting thing. It's cool that the genre's getting so much love though.

Which would be most like wing commander or tie fighter? I was looking at elite but I saw a review where he literally was just making deliveries for days it looked boring as hell. He stated as much in the review. Wing commander was not like that at all.

Your wife made some poor life choices, but, ultimately, has good taste.

That would be Squadron 42.

Though even that is to a degree openish. Tight narrative sequences but also more open ended Far-Cry ish sections.

Ah thanks. And how about if you wanted to go full dogfighting, no RPG elements, any others?

Are you vaguely insulting me because of my very inoffensive post? No reason to be mean dude, I certainly wasn't being mean at all. I agree that she's got good taste though, even if it differs from mine.

Make no mistake, there aren't any RPG elements to it; Unless you consider Conversation choices, but even that was in Wing Commander.

Pure story driven (and only) dogfighting, there is none. That genre has been dead and that is why Star Citizen is crowd funded.

Simply being facetious since the correlation between life choices and video game taste is pretty thin.

Just messing around, no offense meant.

I lift my glass to this trend, and hope it continues until my dream of a first-person, planet-hopping war game comes to fruition.

Okey dokie. I generally like your posts quite a lot so I figured you were joking, but I perceived it as a bit more hostile then you usually come off so that's my mistake :)

There is also Space Engine, it's not really a game yet, but it's a very beautiful procedural generated space game. Worth a look if you have a beast PC and love space. YouTube comment of that video nails it, it's basically space porn.

edit: its free too!

Well it's in space, I'm playing Mass Effect 2 for the first time and I'm LOVING it.

Played Mass Effect a couple of months back and will play Mass Effect 3 in Sept/Oct probably.

Dreadnought's one of those game that you NEED to play to really understand. Everyone I've shown it to doesn't get what's so good about it, and i was kinda the same way until i played it. But mannnn is it fun.

They really did spend a lot of time dead...

All my complaining on forums for 15 years is finally paying off.

Agreed, though anyone who prefers capital ships to fighters would probably be interested to begin with. That's how I got hooked in.

And man, did I ever get hooked deep. It could easily be my GOTY.

Is it out yet? Looks awesome
Alpha at the moment, which I considered odd, since they were talking about beta last year. Though, Yager is developing it, so it could very well be them wanting to ensure what they put out to the public is as high quality a game as possible.

My first and only VR space experience was today with escape velocity. VR and space is going to make real life real boring pretty soon

Also Battlefleet Gothic, Wings of Saint Nazaire and X4 is aparently in development.

Any game like Freelancer ? Too bad that X Rebirth was such a flop...

X Rebirth with all the latest patches and expansions is actually not bad, it scratches that itch at least.

I still have some major issues with it - The
URV station building mission still is terrible

and with 20 hours post 4.0 patch I still haven't
Been able to craft the jumpdrive or the SETA which seems mandatory because there are no highways in Toride

I wanted this game to be good - but I certainly agree it scratches an itch - of the games posted what else would you consider - what else "scratches the itch" of a hardcore X3 player who was let down by Rebirth?
