Subnautica |Early Access| Dive into an alien ocean of danger and beauty

HK-47

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
Dunno. I am playing the division then DS3 and then NMS..(also stardew).

What shall I do? Will the price go up after it leaves EA?

I mean eventually it will go on sale (many times) but I wouldnt expect a price drop to accompany leaving early access.

For what it's worth, these developers pioneered Early Access games before Early Access was a word. Their prior game (Natural Selection 2) was the first Early Access game ever released as far as I know (announced in 2006, years before Minecraft) and they pretty much mastered it before Steam was even a big thing. They're community engagement skills are unmatched.
Huh, that explains a lot.

This looks really interesting. I have a few questions though:

How much micromanagement stuff is there? I didnt get along with other survival games like Dont Starve, feels like you were constantly have to micromanage small stuff that dragged down the pacing. How bad is it here?

How slow is the beginning of the game? Like how long does it take to gather the resources to build a modest base?

There are four different modes in the game: Survival, Freedom, Hardcore and Creative.

They have different kind of restrictions/requirements/difficulties. If you don't want any kind of restrictions you can choose Creative for example. It has no deaths and you don't have to care about health, food, water etc.

Also you essentially start off with a small base, because your escape pod has a fabricator, storage space, etc.

Have there been any character/world wipes like Starbound had? makes me weary of early access now because of that. Looks amazing and I want to try it though.

I think the hunger and thirst meters drop too quickly. I wind up having to spend more time than I'd like to just exist. I enjoy the game a lot more when I disable the thirst and hunger meters with the Freedom mode.

In the game's defense, I hear that there are in-game methods to minimize the impact of hunger and thirst even in the Survival mode. I just don't have the patience to get to that point. Maybe I'd have a better time if the meters just dropped slower.

It's generally recommended to start a new save whenever a major patch is released.

It's a Unity Engine game, so the performance is all over the place. I can't get the game to lock at 60 fps either, so I get 50-100 fps which is kind of annoying since I don't have a GSYNC monitor. Changing vsync to 1 via the console turns the screen green and I have to exit the game to get it back to normal. RivaTuner doesn't seem to work either.

I know this is not easy, but multiplayer with a friend would make this game a must buy. Minecraft was made so much better because of that.

It was mentioned on the last page but co-op is coming. It'll probably take a while though.

I'm not a fan of blaming Unity for performance problems, espeically for an Early Access game from an excellent dev team. I agree that the framerate is unstable though, and it really helps to have a G-Sync monitor.

Not sure what's up with that vsync issue, BTW.

Good to hear! As I said, they are doing an Xbone version so with any luck, full controller support should be coming also

Yeah, I THOUGHT I had heard this a little while back but could never track down where I did...so this is great to see mentioned.

My son jumps between Minecraft on his iPad/Wii U and SW Battlefront on the PC so having the ol' reliable 360 pad back will be good. :)

So a Unity game with varying refresh rates is going to support VR? Ughh.

The game does look really good though and I very much like multiple modes available as sometimes you just want to explore and tinker vs worrying about wolves eating you. I love Long Dark but it gets too much pressure on you sometimes.

Anyway, many modes, great graphics, hopefully stable frame rate VR support soon... Bought!

Apparently RivaTuner works fine. For some reason it didn't lock the framerate at the main menu, but once in the game it's locked at 60. The performance isn't great though even with a 970 with recommended settings at 1080p.

I can't decide if I want this or Van Helsing: Final Cut. Both are on sale this week. This interests me more but I'm generally allergic to Early Access

Oh hell I'll probably just end up buying them both

I've had this game on my wishlist for a long time now, waiting for a decent sale to hit. The only thing that was holding me back is that I am not really too into "survival" games as I tend to get bored. I was immediately interested in this one though, with it's beautiful underwater environments and unique take on the genre, it just seemed like it was worth a shot. So onto my wish list it went. Anyway, thanks for the post OP, you may have pushed me to finally make that purchase and give this one a shot. :)

Can someone make an OT? It clearly deserves it at this point. I have a lot of questions about doing and finding shit.
This has served as the catchall Subnautica thread but it couldn't hurt to make another considering that the sale notification almost has more posts in one day.

edit: Or just convert this one, sure.

Tempting. Not sure if I'll have time to dig into it before it goes on a deeper discount later, so I'm on the fence right now.

So yeah, I get anxious in first-person survival games. I noted that the survival elements can be turned off, but does that also mean that creatures that you need to survive would be removed, or that these creatures would merely not be dangerous? I'd still like to be able to interact with sharks and octopi, but not have to worry about the risk they pose.

As far as I know, none of the modes remove any of the wildlife or change their behavior.

Survival - Thirst/hunger active, player can be killed
Freedom - Thirst/hunger disabled, player can be killed
Creative - Thirst/hunger disabled, player is invincible, story disabled
Hardcore - Everything enabled, permadeath

Played for a few hours and then the game crashed due to switching the audio source (bluetooth headset turned off) lost a lot of progress. Also had a hard time with navigating where I am, spent like half an hour trying to find my base due to the life pod floating away from it.

Terrible performance on a 970. I set it to recommend but it stutters like crazy and items and terrain pop in right in front of me.

How difficult is Freedom? Is it relatively easy to get killed/harmed?

I want to like this type of survivor games, but I'm just too terrible at it. I played The Long Dark, couldn't even survive past 1 hour of gameplay.

Picked this up due to the thread, and it seems cool. My fear of the depths, however, is not cool so this game requires me to force myself into quite a bit of it. Definitely said "this is the worst game ever created" more than once in response to said fear.

Maybe update drivers? idk I play on a 760 and it's generally smooth try screwing around with the settings a bit. The pop in part is an engine thing, they're gonna try to work on it as I understand.

Picked this up during the Steam winter sale but haven't gotten around to it yet. Seems to be really well supported as it's had a bunch of big patches since I've bought it including a big one today.

New update, expanding on the opening Crash Sequence and adding more interactive elements to your life pod

Enhancing the emotion and feeling of the opening sequence of Subnautica, a new game will now begin with a shiny opening cinematic. Complete with hazard lights, blazing fires, warning signs and more, you've never felt more stranded. We've also added functionality to items originally in the lifepod to make them more interactive

Awesome stuff.

Just had my feels bad moment. Was cruising around in my Seamoth when there was the terrifying roar of a Reaper. Suddenly It was munching on my Seamoth. Saw its health drop to 30% and was like well abandon ship I'm only 80m from the surface I can make it.

It dropped the Seamoth and decided to munch me

The only difference is that you won't die of starvation or thirst. I *think* the rules on item loss on death are relaxed as well.

Life expectancy is entirely dependent on the biome you're swimming through. Some are much safer than others.

If I enjoyed Everblue 2 and Endless Ocean, how quintessential is this with No Man's Sky around the corner?

That's question is worded so oddly lol.

As someone who keeps a hi-tech planted aquarium no doubt the underwater setting is one of my favourites. First time I have heard of this game and if it were on console I would snap it up. Love the exploration aspect and all the different types of wildlife, the graphics also look pretty good judging by those gifs in the OP but it may be because of the tiny size. Might have to look up some more info on this.

It's a pretty different game from what NMS seems like it will be. Certainly, there are genre similarities but this game is very focused on a handcrafted environment with discreet biomes. I definitely think if you liked the other two, you'd be into it.

Here, check this out. They overhauled the water visuals recently

I'll probably just convert this thread into one once the sale is over. It's more up-to-date and active than the other Subnautica thread
Really appreciated. I've played for 4 hours and built a Seamoth and my first base is shaping up nicely. This is gonna be a real trip.

I've only played around for an hour orso and it's been great, the exploring has been more engaging than any other survival sim I've played.

There is one big caveat though, I for the life of me can't get the game to stay at an acceptable framerate, regardless of what settings I select - weirdly enough the lower the settings the worse the performance. I get massive fps drops from 140 down to 20 for no apparent reason, it wouldn't be bothersome if it happened once every while, but at the moment it's constantly swinging
Using a 980ti, 4960k, 1440p, installed on an ssd.

How much RAM? I'm wondering if it's bottlenecked around RAM. I have 24GB and it runs mostly smooth for me. Are you on like 8?
