Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

It works for phones because the phone industry is not comparable in terms of being able to walk into any high street game shop and get a 24 month contract for a PS4. Equally people justify phones in entirely different ways as by and large they use them a lot more throughout the day.

It will not work for consoles - you will fragment your user base. If you're proposing a PC like system, people will just go to PC's. Sure people will remain, but you are more likely to lose people than attract people with multiple iterations of a mainstream console.

Hypothetical question for you: what if PS4.5 games were guaranteed to be playable on a PS4 for a certain amount of time? Like "you're not going to see a PS4.5 base requirement until 2019."

How would you feel about it then?

"And let's dispel once and for all with this fiction that Sony doesn't know what they're doing. They know exactly what they're doing. Sony is undertaking a systematic effort to change this console, to make PS4 more like the PC."

A PS4K is ok, if the idea is for 4k support and improved VR support for PS4 games.

It's going to be incredibly difficult to pull off correctly though, but Sony 2.0 after their ps3 blunders has the best chance of pulling it off. Consider me skeptical for now.

You are increasing demand of developers who now have to target two platforms, and I have concerns about PS4p games not running as they should since they now have the 4k version.

I also like PS4K as a name ;)

But theres no way they will get games to run at 4k and the box not cost 1000 bucks though..My guess is a 1080p 60fps machine for around the same price as a PS4?

Yea, but if they buy that superior PS5.5 then we're all good. It'll be like iPhone buyers on the S cycle.

PS5 needs to be successful at first to warrant a PS5.5, tho. If your console sells only like 5-6 million units through its first three years, then you can't expect investors to be kin on the idea of releasing a reversion for that said failed product.

I'm not saying that this will definitely happen with PS5 but it's a dangerous probability.

In layman’s terms, 4K resolution is around twice the pixel size of 1080p, which is the current standard for games on PlayStation 4 and competing consoles.

Not questioning Patrick or the validity of his article, but he made a small blunder there

1920 x 1080 (1080p) = 2,073,600 pixels
4096 x 2160 (4k) = 8,847,360 pixels

Don't like this one bit. I'm pretty glad I decided to move back into PC gaming this past year. I wonder what I'll do with my PS4 when PS4.5 is officially on the horizon? If support drops off for PS4, I'll gladly trade it in towards some new PC hardware.

Well this thread really took off. Haven't been able to follow today, has anything about the story changed since Kotaku posted it?

I'm still hung up on the 4K thing. That seems... optimistic.

I can see not all developers "supporting" additional power of PS 4.5 it it won't attach well. Especially Japanese developers may not bother other than more stable FPS.

That's an aesthetic redesign not an upgrade in hardware

The OG 3DS does pretty much everything the new 3DS can, its an improvement, sure, and it has one exclusive game, but its pretty much optional, the same way this PS4.5 could be, as long as the games stay compatible for both.

Point is upgrading is an option, not an obligation. If the hypotethical PS4.5 introduces benefits that make PS4 obsolete then I think it will be fair to complain. The PS2 slim was worth it just for convenience alone, really. Same with the n3DS.

It's harder and harder to find a reason not to build a pc now a days. Consoles are basically becoming alienware for mid/low settings on new pc games. The biggest appeal to console gamers that I know has been the future proofing of it All. There That goes

True, but I don't think the risk is really that great. Early adopters are generally early adopters simply because they can't resist the new shit. We always know we're getting a crappy deal overall, but buy anyway, because 2017 isn't 2013 and we ain't that patient... hell, there's no guarantee we'll even live to see it, lol. If anything, those that buy consoles at or near launch are far more likely to be in the "upgrade every iteration" group.

Well I for one am thrilled, especially if it meets all of the 4k blu ray standards and has the drive. Was going to pick one up eventually for my 4k tv.

Trump-Sony is back.

Sony at E3:

"We’re going to start winning on every level. I say it kiddingly, but I mean it 100 percent: We’re going to win, win, win! We’re going to win so much, you’re going to get sick and tired of it. You’re going to say “Mr. President, we can’t take it anymore, we’re winning too much! Please, we don’t want to win that much anymore, we can’t take it, Mr. President!” And I’m not going to care — we’re going to keep winning!"

This will be future proof. PS4 is future proof until PS5 releases. There's no way games released in 2023 for PS4 will not work with launch unit.

I agree, there are many risks with this. But many signs are pointing to a niche product here. Could be the return of 599 US DOLLARS.
But that's ok when you have a 249 non 4k option right next to it.

The convenience of an all-in-one dedicated gaming box at a reasonable price was and will always be the main appeal of consoles not the future proofing. Future proofing is and always was to build a PC yourself and upgrade it at your own pace.

Could it be that both Sony and Ms got scared after seeing the nx specs???

I doubt it have anything to do with NX more like testing new sale model similar to smartphones due to upgradable architecture. Also this move kills an hardware advantage NX could have had which I also doubt it even had knowing Nintendo.

Another benefit of this is hopefully, older PS4 games will stop sounding like hairdriers when the going gets tough.

That's a hardware design flaw and less of what the actual hardware is.
Proper thermal paste seems to resolve most of that.

I have not built up the confidence to change it out yet.

Wow, really are entering the full PC age.

Not buying the 4K talk at all either. a 980TI struggles to run 4K Tomb Raider at mediocre settings.

Add in the price of the original PS4, VR, +PS4.5 and it's become fairly humorous.
