Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

I expected ms to go this route but not Sony

Not bad.

Wonder when they will announce it

I don't get how Sony benefits from this. Their console is already more powerful than their competitors', a PS4.5 would mean more work for devs, it could be confusing for consumers, there seems to be a lot of potential downsides with little benefit.

Not going to lie, I'd be tempted to get one if this happens but I just don't see why it would. From a cost perspective too, in the current way of doing things consoles can be sold for higher margins over time as the prices of components fall, but if they started doing yearly updates that doesn't happen. Smartphone and laptop manufacturers release yearly updates because they have to keep up with their competition, and Microsoft and Sony both moving to more frequent updates would be costly for both of them.

sony can prepare the playstation brand for a future where dedicated hardware is an outdated concept (which is on its way already). they can convince existing owners to upgrade. they can make it look like the ps vr is part of a brand new playstation brand launch. they can do this again in three more years instead of making 'playstation 5'.

So with what's being proposed... would a PS4.5 game run on a PS4 with lower resolution/graphics settings?

How would this work so that people who haven't upgraded aren't screwed out of playing new games?
Presumably games would work on both and run on "high" settings on 4.5 and lower setting on the 4. Then the next system would come out and that would be the new high spec system. Games would still work on the 4.5, but would look and run better if played on a 5.

Something like that.

Game Boy released in '89 and Game Boy Color in '98. Not the best example. In fact, when Nintendo releases a "New" type handheld, you can be pretty sure the true successor is not far away. It's not really the same thing as adopting shorter hardware iterations. That is something NX might do, but who knows? Heck, we have more concrete information - with confirmation - about this upgraded PS4 that leaked not 24 hours ago.

My stupid internal discussion with this announcement was - Ooh, PS4.5 would probably run the Witcher 3 better! Or I should just upgrade my PC... but then I'd have to do redo my save, and lose my trophies. Rivetingly important decisions here.

At any rate, morbidly curious to see how this turns out for Sony and Microsoft.

Yet to be seen.

Hope true, I need PS fixed. I have been PC alone since this gen. I want PSVR along with my PC VR kit.

That mean I have to get 4K TV as well sighs.

Compare it to PS3 days. Games on PC got slowly better and better while the same counterpart games on PS3 slowly got uglier in comparison. With PC games taking a generation leap in this upcoming year, more developers will be inclined to increase the visual fidelity to match the newer hardware's threshold. I believe that existing PS4 will not be gimped for the sake of gimping. It'll be more of maintaining minimum specs e.g. 900p/30 and going from there. Visuals wise, it may be a difference comparable to DX11 to DX12, or High to Ultra.

They will always satisfy the low end. As of now, XBO is the low end. Maybe NX will become the low end in the upcoming year.

I pretty aware of other divisions within Sony. Got nothing to do with traditional console cycles and Sony leveraging market leadership to mess it up. They are in for a rude awakening thinking they can sort of emulate the smartphone market.

My interest in NX just grew x2.

Tell me what a traditional console cycle is in your opinion.

The amount of RAM isn't what's bottlenecking theTitan X and all the other GPU's at 4K. It's a combination of pure compute power, GPU grunt, and bandwith (the speed of the RAM). The constellation of power isn't there at a mainstream level. HBM 2.0, however, will atleast alleviate those bandwith concerns.

Sorry if I misled with my comments. RAM isn't a bottleneck true for the PCs.. I think it would be for the consoles though. As the RAM is used for the entire OS. Of course bandwidth is a given though. That comes with just having RAM in the first place.

And lose tons of first time buyer's and hype for a new console since there wont be as big of a generational leap.

People will wait till PS5.5 COME out before they jump in. ANd then you'll have this weird divide of PS4.5 or whatever, PS4 vanilla owners, and PS5 owners that will ultimatly kill sales as people lose interest because there's nothing to look for outside of an updated console.

On a second thought, did you guys notice that both Sony and MS talked about the same idea around the same time?

Maybe it was part of the contract with AMD that there was a clause stating that AMD could provide an improved CPU/GPU combination after 2 years and refreshes the hardware on the same contract?

Just a thought although I stick to my original post that the change will be aesthetic more than anything.

Bought the ps4 on launch day. They can do what they want, but I'm not buying another console until 2020. Especially given how long last gen and remasters overlapped current gen.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
This would probably cause confusion and probably mess up their current momentum.......probably.
But I don't see why Sony didn't do this off the bat, nothing has change since the PS4 released and 4K is still in its infancy, just seems a odd move and waste of profit which could be sent on a real successor.

Existing users might upgrade, but if new users buy a 4.5 instead of a higher margin 4 they're losing money. Maybe the 4.5 would be a lot more expensive.

Seems like there'd be much cheaper ways to plan ahead and hype the VR.

So just wondering, to all the guys that really want this..Why havent you gone down the PC route already? Is it just because of the exclusives or are there other factors?

on a related note, this might be the last big story broken by Kotaku after Gawker just lost the case and has to pay $115M to Hulk Hogan. Gaf thread

what a weird ass day!

edit: beaten like Gawker in court

Why?

Early adopters adopt things early. They'll have had a ps4 for a few years by the time this comes out. Some will happily wait for the next one, but others will jump in and get this one. Nintendo seem to get away with tweaks to their handheld hardware constantly and people eat it up

They definitely didn't get away with the last one. ANd the iterations back in GBA, ds days were more asthetic, and the addition of a camera. But didn't have different versions of the game.

N3DS screwed the pooch and didn't do anything that make it and Nintendo look great especially with a couple high profile games only being playable on N3DS.

So this could be last leak from Kotaku. Hulk Hogan just won lawsuit against Gawker and they owe him 115M. Welp.
Oh shit, I haven't been keeping up on that. Are they done then? I heard even if they appeal they can't afford to stay open in the meantime as they have to pay Hogan immediately.

Their employees just unionized too.

From the company that releases a new version of their flagship phone every 6 months? Makes sense doesn't it

Releasing a new phone on a regular basis is in a completely different ballpark to a new console. If we are expected to trade in our consoles on a semi-regular basis there are other considerations such as savegames, hdd data, peripherals, etc

Moving to a new phone these days is a fairly seamless process.

The big question here is will I be able to transfer my P.T. to the PS4.5's HDD ? :)
