Nikkei: Nintendo ceasing Wii U production at the end of the year

Have ten random games from the bin to the right of the counter at Mandarake at stake here. Also a steak dinner.
I'm so going to win this bet that NX is this fiscal year :)

If the NX bombs, I feel like Nintendo will have no choice but to go third party.

I think it really depends on what they NX is. If they actually attempt to change their ways, I could see one more try after the NX if it bombs. If it still seems like they're stuck with what they've been doing, I think they'll be dismissed by most consumers outside of their core fan-base and another console would be unwise.

Apart from the MK8, Splatoon, MM and Xenoblade Wii U bundles, he usually makes much better jokes.

It's really hard for me to see that. Pikmin 3 is the best pikmin. Smash 4 is the best smash. Mario kart 8 is the best mario kart. 3D world is phenomenal. Tropical freeze is amazing. Bayo 2 is so good. W101 was a blast. Xenoblade X is amazin, also. Tons of good stuff on the system, way better than Wii's output from first party, imo. It's also getting a zelda game by the end of the year.

I guess if you're coming to the system wanting stuff from 3rd party, I can't disagree, but it's nintendo's best first party output since SNES, as a whole, I think.

Previous Mario Karts had more content/better battle modes and Pikmin 2 is better than 3 personally.

But yeah i think its safe to say theres gems hidden in there.

I think Nintendo has enough cash in reserve to stay first party indefinitely. And besides, they still make money from their handheld lines at least... right?

Pump your breaks there buddy, they aren't Apple. I do see them making loads on mobile though, which might help their reserves.

More content than mario kart 8? Not if you include DLC, I don't think. More modes, maybe, but I was never into battle mode anyway. And yeah, I don't blame you if you like pikmin 2, more, but I think pikmin 3 is the best, personally.

So those that bought a Wii U, are you happy with what you got? Are you happy with the 4 year production cycle of the console?

absolutely. Such an incredible 1st party machine. Since it plays Wii games this might be a console I never sell as there are many wii games I've yet to play/beat. It's a shame it didn't sell more but unless you own Nintendo stock (I do) than that shouldn't matter to you. Despite not selling well they were able to squeeze out a little profit and learn how to program in HD. I can't wait to see what the NX has in store.

NX 2016 confirmed 100%.
It ain't 100% until Nintendo says it.

Of course, I feel that they're going to try to get the NX console out this holiday. It'll be a quick phase-out for Wii U but Nintendo has to get back on their feet with a more profitable system and bigger/better ideas for an ever-fickle audience.

Aostia

El Capitan Todd
This is some Okawa level decision imho
Kimishima already getting shit together trying the desperate move to keep N relevant in the hw business

Hopefully the outcome will be different this time

Wii U's first party library shits on the Wiis outside of the two Galaxy games.

i guess there's xenoblade too but I didn't care much for either title

I wouldn't mind they kill the WIIu this month if the NX will play my WII U games.

I have like 11 WII U games and I love them all very much. bring on the NX

to be honest I think the WII U price was justified for Mario Kart alone. its the most fun game I have with my wife or when my brothers visit.

Battle mode in Mario Kart games has always felt like a tacked on death match mode in a game that just didn't need it. It's hardly a loss considering how great the actual racing portion of the game is and the quality of the tracks. Mario Kart has never been better.

Technically Early 2017 is still this fiscal year

But no way they are twisting in the wind for that long and missing the holiday season to launch in Spring

You guys are crazy

NX will be this year

iirc 3DS is still way behind the PSP so I dunno about that Joe

I'm sure once the weather clears up the 3DS will shoot past it

Doing almost 60 million in the age of smartphone gaming is nothing short of miraculous.

Just because it hasn't done DS levels doesn't mean it has done badly.

Nintendo's first loss came just after they did the 3DS price cut. They cut $70 off each 3DS unit and it was then being sold at a loss. In the 6 months that followed, they sold 11 million units. Assuming the 3DS was at $20 profit at its original price, then that's $50 loss a unit. For 11 million units, that'd be $550,000,000 lost on 3DS hardware, plus all the R&D costs for Wii U, and then the Wii U not taking off continued it, but the 3DS soon became profitable.

The 3DS has done well. It hasn't broken records, no, but it's very disingenuous to call it underperforming and to say it underperforming is why Nintendo have lost money..

Zelda still coming?
It wouldn't surprise me if there was no Wii U Zelda game. That open world one might just release on NX primarily and have a version for the Wii U, kind of like how Twilight Princess was out for the GameCube in addition to the Wii.

The 3DS will top out somewhere north of 60 million. What makes it a money maker is that it's still capable of selling a lot of software 5+ years into the cycle, unlike the PSP.

Not entirely surprising but disappointing nonetheless. I really hope they knock it out of the park with the NX.. Nintendo HAS to embrace modern tech. They can't go cheap again. The Wii issued sea change but you can't count on that every time. Skimping in comparison to your competitors is just asking to be beat down.

I don't see how it is news that the NX will be revealed this year. Nintendo said it would be revealed at E3 this year, last year.

Maybe Nintendo made too many Wii U and they can cost until next year?
