Nikkei: Nintendo ceasing Wii U production at the end of the year

Usually they announce a console 1 year before they launch it. So if they're announcing it this year(2016), that means it's launching next year(2017).

And the reason they're shutting down production of WiiU is because nobody is buying it.

If it was selling well, then they would keep making it.

Naw

2017 launch is too slow for the turnaround they need to happen for the fiscal year

They have been priming this bad boy for awhile now

But times have changed; announcing the Wii U 1+ year early clearly did them no favors, whereas Xbox One and PS4 were both revealed in the year they released, weren't they?

Another piece of evidence to add to the pile that NX will release at the end of this year.

On a second point, though, I'd say it's also an indication that the home NX will be $300 or less. Generally the logic of keeping your previous gen console around when your new one comes out is that it's a couple hundred dollars cheaper, so you can sell it to an audience who just want a cheap console with a decent library, and don't care about having the latest and greatest.

This logic doesn't work if your old console is only $50-$100 cheaper than your new one, though, and with the current trajectory of Wii U prices, it's unlikely they could bring the cost of it much below $200 to $250 by the end of the year. This would be fine if their console were $400 plus (and indeed that's around what PS3 and XB360 were selling for when PS4 and XBO were released), but with a new console in the $300 region it simply doesn't make sense to keep the old one around. You're just cannibalising sales of the new console and confusing customers by keeping the old console on store shelves.

Well, NX is coming this year. Let's hope they impress.

Now that it looks like Microsoft is (not-so) stealthily leaving the console market we need competent Nintendo consoles to help keep Sony on their toes.

It's not even being developed by IntiCreates.

Why do people keep thinking that the Wii U and Vita versions are being done by them?

I know they are not! That doesnt mean the game can or cannot be limited because they have to be downported to WiiU and Vita which dont natively support UE4.

Yes but Sony and Microsoft showed you can announce and release a console in the same year. Many see the same applying here simply because it makes little sense not to.

So those that bought a Wii U, are you happy with what you got? Are you happy with the 4 year production cycle of the console?

I'm fine with it. I've enjoyed my Wii U but it's gimmick didn't resonate with the public so it's time to try again. I'll have my Wii U for a long time, and maybe now I'll put homebrew on it like I did the Wii when that stopped getting support.

So the OG Xbox was better than the PS2? Games makes a console great dude, not the hardware.

The WiiU hardware literally gets in the way

Slow OS, lack of online features, archaic account and friend system, no HDD

They released a compromising system in an age of convenience and standards offered by everyone else

The whole point of bringing Armature on for the ports is so they don't have to deal with those versions at all. They're effectively a non-factor beyond having the money to do them.

That dumb controller killed it. The system could have been so much cheaper to buy now. But they can't cut the price.

Absolutely. It ruined everything. It's also a big pain in the butt to buy a replacement if your Gamepad brokes or stops working. It also looks like it was made by Playskool.

Pretty much everything you listed isn't a hardware related issue lol.

I'm shocked the Wii U has been out for four years. It feels more like two, and I bought it at launch. Ah well, I can look on my shelf and see a collection of solid Nintendo games. That's all I expected going in and I'm fine with that.

This news is all over the internet now.

Any potential Wii U owners are probably off the fence at this point.

Nintendo, you need to unveil the NX, like, yesterday.

the beginning of the end.

Wii U prices to skyrocket come 2017.

Shiet, time to stock up on Wii U Pro Controllers why I still can.

Any accessories I need to acquire before they disappear forever?

With this news I plan on buying a couple more Pro Controllers and Gamecube Controllers along with another adapter. Expect the scalpers to see this and buy up stock everywhere in site. Now's the time to buy these things if you've been holding back.

I was expecting a reveal this year but Nintendo should discontinue the Wii U till the console is at least released for a while. Yeah the Wii U wasn't a huge success but they shouldn't kill it off so soon.

Storage is hardware related

Its inherent lack of power and its low power tuning contributed to OS issues

Here one. System costs ballooned to over 100 dollars more than the Wii because of the gamepad

That's not are the reasons of why third party stop supporting the Wii U...

Yup. Not a good look for Nintendo right now.

If you're going to discontinue the thing this early, the successor should be out there and in the public consciousness by now.

Where have you been? They announced the NX in 2015... Nintendo has been very forthright with letting it's fans know this system is coming. They only thing they haven't done is release a finalized name and shown us a picture of the box (they'll never show us stats before hand)

This means no Zelda for Wiig and it must be a launch title with nx. That would be the smart move

This would be very dumb. It's certainly still coming to Wii U, it's likely to be a cross-gen title though.

I will admit that I am mostly because I want to not buy a portable and console. Share libraries FTW.
Absolutely. I'm excited for the new ecosystem, and everything feeling "whole" in a way that we can't really get with 3DS and Wii U currently.

There's a lot of potential in new technologies that could make Nintendo more efficient and easier to do business with.

If the NX was going to be announced and supposedly released later this year, then I'm not surprised.

Still, I'm not giving up my Wii U anytime soon. Splatoon and Bayo 2 are still 2 of my go-to games.

At least Japanese third parties would be on board if the whole shared library thing is a thing. They still love their handhelds.
