Jesus, Mikey hasn't posted since the 27th, as well. Hope all is well but I assume they just met up and are doing obscene amounts of cardio together.

Hope this helps.

If you were eating 800 calories a day you would be seriously malnourished. Consider that women who are cutting for bikini competitions consider 1300 calories to be extremely low. So something must be wrong with the calculation there.
Thanks for the advice. I guess it does make sense to focus on strength for now given where I'm at. I was also eyeballing 180, but I wasn't sure if it was too much, so I'll move my goal up. How much should I be looking to gain every month and how long should it take me to reach 180 in a clean way? I know I'm not going to get there overnight, but an estimate will give me something to know that I'm on track.

I'll also look into the calories, but I'm confident that I've been eating around the 1000 calorie range for 2 months now. Does this mean that I should increase my targeted daily intake from 1000 to a higher amount?

Can you post what you eat in a day?

You're not just focusing on strength. You will be getting size a plenty as a newbie to lifting, I just mean don't focus on exercise routines that are designed around beach muscles only.

Also I still think your calorie count is way off. I know you are small but that just seems like too little. Also don't look at how much you gain so you know you are on track. Everyone is different.

If you are going up in size, weight, strength - you are making gains. Size/strength don't often move forward together. Plenty of times you'll be the same weight but pop strength a few weeks in a row. If you start to gain too quickly and notice too much fat gain - you can back off the calories.

Personally at your weight the last thing I would do is care where my calories came from to eat "clean". That is probably on the low side of requirements. You are 20 and if you are in good health - eat everything in sight just about and work a program like SS like a beast. Focus on size right now. I don't want to sound like a Debbie downer but 125 at your height sounds unhealthy especially with your calories if they are right. You sure you don't have health issues like thyroid or other autoimmune diseases? I onyl ask Cuz I'm apparently a goddamn pro at being blessed with genetic autoimmune disorders XD

We are here to support you but if I sound direct it's because I'm on mobile and typing sucks :p

Hi, everyone. I'm looking to start working out.

Age: 20
Height: 5' 11"
Weight: 125lb.
Goal: 160lb.
Current Training Schedule: None
Current Training Equipment Available: Going to buy whatever's necessary

My goal to start with is to get to put on some muscle and get to 160lb with a clean bulk. I'm planning on starting off with the full body workout recommended in the OP. Since, I've never done this stuff seriously before, I want to make sure my plan is all correct.

First, I need to figure out my maintenance calories. I've been eating roughly the same meals consistently for about 2 months, so I just took the total amount of calories in those meals and I consider it my maintenance. The problem is that it comes out to be surprisingly lower than I thought it would be. The total for a day comes out to be roughly 800 calories. Is this possible or am I messing up my calculations somewhere?

I thought to then start out with, I would go with a daily intake of about 1000 calories with a 40:30:30 macro nutrient ratio and then start the full body workout routine. After that, I will need to do this for about 2 weeks to see if I gain or lose weight. If I lose or maintain weight, I will need to increase the daily calories and continue. If I gained weight, then I should continue until I plateau after which I will increase calories a bit. From what I gather, I should be gaining about a pound a month?

I have a few questions though. I'm mostly interested in aesthetics over the strength side of things. Is the full body workout for beginners that is recommended in OP the correct one for me to choose? And also, how do I know when I should change workout programs and which one to choose?

I'm completely new at this, so please correct me wherever I'm wrong.
DAMN son! 5'11 at 125. hory shit.

Bruh don't even worry about the science stuff right now. focus on getting calories in your body. You won't make any gains if you are not putting enough food in your body.

even if you worked hard and had a strict diet for a year you probably wouldn't even hit 15lbs of muscle.

edit: not trying to be harsh with my op. Don't want you starving your body. If you are a fan of Comic book movies look up how much the actors had to eat and on a regular basis just to maintain those crazy bodies.

Ran 2 miles straight for the first time in my life today. After getting new PB's on flat and incline bench. And while still losing weight. Feels good man.

Upped my fats a bit and dropped to 2800 calories. Fats made a huge difference in energy output the past few days. About 180 on carbs, 150 fat and 215 protein on lift days. I drop about 500 calories of carbs and fat on non lift days.

Stomach is def less grumbly this week, but I have been eating more filler greens, too. Dat spinach hnnnnng.

What foods are you getting your fats from? Im pretty much getting them from peanuts/peanut butter because i dont like the taste of olvies or avacados.

Sorry, I was too busy scaling convention centers, accepting awards, and partying my f*cking ass off in San Diego. Back to it.

Side note: Had some fun at a crazy-ass nightclub called Bang Bang. Turns out it's a sushi place by day. From what I saw at night, i recommend not eating there. Serious health code violations all around.

Though thats what I've been on for a couple of months and don't really feel that way.

Of course I'm not working on building muscle. For me it been more about losing weight and getting my blood sugar under control as I've recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. And really if I'm honest its mostly been about cutting out junk food and cutting out heavy carb foods like bread and pasta as well as eating much more vegetables.

Even now though (10 weeks in) a hell of a lot of it is about finding out what foods I can still eat and not shoot my blood sugar through the roof. Which has made eating out pretty nightmarish.

What are you eating exactly? I aim for 1650 right now and I couldn't imagine eating less than half that. That's like eating a Quest bar for breakfast, lunch and dinner and then a snack somewhere.

Lets see. Yesterday I had...

Breakfast...some cereal (Weetbix...not sure what US cereal its like)
Lunch...salad with some chicken and a mandarin
Dinner...steamed vegetables (carrot, zucchini, broccoli, silverbeet) with some slices of roasted pork shoulder.
Snacks..some raw nuts (macadamias, almonds, cashews, walnuts).

Whats kind of been interesting is with cutting out the big carb things and junk my appetite has actually reduced so I've not felt the need to fill up on cakes, biscuits and potato chips/cheetos. Prior to by diagnosis and diet change I'd fill on that crap of an evening if I was home. Now I generally don't even have much of an urge to snack after dinner on that kind of rubbish.

Its not really been a deliberate plan in terms of being on a low calorie diet, just that cutting back on carbs and junk which affect my blood sugar its just kind of just happened. Part of it is that I started in a aussie summer/autumn where I'd be eating lots of salads anyway. I think the cold part of the year will be interesting part as in the past I'd eat lots of hot junk food, and food with lots of rich sugar filled sauces.

Part of it of course is that I'm not really stringent about portion sizes (cant be bothered weighing measuring stuff) so I could be off a fair bit in terms of what I'm putting into MFP. But I don't think I'm wildly off base most of the time. And of course with MFP data all crowd sourced I'm not really sure how it accurate really is. Especially given I'm cooking stuff from scratch rather than eating prepackaged stuff.

Of course I'm obviously going to have to eat more calories as I want to improve my fitness too (for now that has been limited to near-daily 30-60 minute walks and some weekend bike rides), so I'll have to work out how to do that without impacting my blood sugar levels. Which I guess will mean more protein and fat rather than going back to a high carb diet.

Nah, you guys sound fine. I knew I was skinny for my height, but I didn't know the situation was that bad haha. So, I guess beggars can't really be choosers. I'll focus on eating plenty and working out to start with. The only thing I worry about is that I'll go overboard and eat too much. I also had some blood tests done and everything came out fine, so there's nothing to worry about on that front.

On the plus side, I will have some really dramatic before/after pics :p

Finished my third day of bikepacking today after cycling for nearly 12 hours (actually out for 14hrs).

Total stats...

1 completely wrecked bike (multiple failures)
1 destroyed brand new pair of waterproof trousers (fell into cassette)
1 crushed cycling glasses
1 crash
1 completely dead finger (bit concerned about that)

3 days
33 hours total activity / 26.5 hours moving
220.2 miles (354km) ridden
24,215 feet (7,380m) climbed
17,500kcal burned (probably a little more than this as it's based on moving time vs total average heart rate)

Be prepared to gain some weight just don't let it scare you. You might also have to buy some bigger size pants

I just got a Jawbone UP3 off Amazon for $30. What can I do with it? I have a Nexus 5- what are some good apps for it? I like to use the Arc Trainer- are there any apps that specifically log that? The UP app just has elliptical.

Do you weigh your meat? Because unless you are eating like 2oz that should be more than 800 calories there.

No. More of a guess. I guessed around 150 grams, which according to MFP was 260 calories. The dinner all up being around 400. But as I said I'm really not sure how much I can trust MFP when it comes to non packaged goods.

And checking just now the entries in MFP for the same item have wildly different values depending on which one I'd chosen (with 4oz varying between 150 and 300 cals). Rather annoying.

Dairy, meats (eye food), eggs, oils, almonds, peanuts, pistachios. Pretty much anywhere. I don't fret too much getting saturated fats, tbh. I get plenty of poly/mono so throwing some saturated is fine, IMO.

Good deal. You'll know if you are eating too much but at your age you should be inhaling food without many issues. If you notice a bit too much fat gain just cut back a little each week. Get your target macros in order and hit them and don't worry about going over too much.

Not a great start to this week for me.

Pinched my sciatic nerve yesterday morning. Pain on my left side. Leg was numb to the toes. I could barely put an weight on it. It happened in the way to work.

Got to work. I went to my office and just lied in the floor for almost an hour to stretch and crack things back in place.

Eventually, I relieved most of the pressure, but there was still a little numbness left. I had to go to a chiro to adjust the rest of it.

Hit the gym that night with the intent to go light and WHAM. It hits me again. Spent about an hour on the gym floor stretching.

Thank goodness, I feel better today. My cranky body is not liking me.

Mmmmmhhh Weetbix with milk and honey! But seriously, that should be spiking your sugar levels hard. It's pure carbs wheat. If you are looking to add more calories and you're eating Weetbix I'm going to assume you are British. Regardless, instead eat two slices of bacon (or two sausage links) and 2-3 large eggs cooked in said grease from the bacon. BLAM there's like 500 calories.

Australian.

Don't have weetbix with honey though. Honey is off limits for me now. Normally its just hot water and a little milk. And as much as it pains me I have gone off processed meats like bacon.

Wasn't he galavanting round the welsh valleys this weekend? Probably keeping his phone charges incase of emergency rather than posting here

Ha, see above post.

I feel so wrecked today, and I've legit lost a bunch of muscle thanks to shit fuelling. C'est la vi though. I do these things to challenge myself.

I never measure my body outside of a scale, but I signed up at a new gym where they take your measurements. Didn't realize my arms have grown over an inch and a half (from 13.5in to 15in relaxed) since Ii began working out 2 years ago. Nice little ego boost lol.
