Overwatch animated short - "Dragons"

Fun fact, if you shoot that Murloc hanging outside the restaurant it makes the Murloc sound. Lots of cool stuff like that hidden in the game.

I really don't know how to say this without sounding like an ass, even though it's not to meant to come out this way, so I'm just going to go ahead and say it:

Why are these shorts and animations so much more interesting than the actual game? It's the same thing as Battleborn (that has this awesome as fuck intro) and yet the the game (Battleborn, not Overwatch) 1. looks nowhere near that interesting style-wise. For example, the characters in the animation are, in my opinion, much better designed than in the actual game, and 2. is a slower, MOBA-like game compared to the wild, crazy action going on in that animation.

I am not insulting the game (well, maybe I'm insulting BattleBorn a little...), and like I said, don't take it that way, but it just kind of disappoints me that they put all of this effort into these shorts and building this lore and it's completely detached from the game itself.

And yes, I understand why they do this. It builds hype and gets people emotionally invested in your game. Companies do it all the time. I just hope that, at least with Overwatch, we get something out of all this lore/world building they're doing with the shorts that translates maybe to a longer running series or a movie or some campaign content (a co-op campaign maybe?) sometime down the line.

I guess this is a really long-winded post saying that I hope they do more of this through one of the ways I mentioned above.

That said, the short was absolutely amazing.

So odd how detached the game is from any kind of narrative, yet they created this whole world and background for it.

Exactly.

I don't like the half serious half comedic tone of it. Also the way they tone down the violence by showing shock arrow instead of just normal arrow. May be it's just because I'm used to TF2.
I still don't understand what's people fighting over in Overwatch. Of all characters there are only 2 characters who actively hunt ex-Overwatch agents, the others are either former agents or have nothing to deal with Overwatch. So what are they murdering each other for?

They're fighting over an objective as part of a non-specific mission (escorting a limo, capturing the doomfist from the first cinematic, etc.)

The matches in-game are basically non-canon conflicts using all the characters, backstory and setting of Overwatch as told by shorts like these. Like I said in the other thread, if you want canon fights that "make sense" then you suddenly have to limit classes to a team, or make everyone generic.

I do agree that a few more "renegades" or straight antagonists would be welcome in the future, but it doesn't really affect the story much as it is now.

I AM LOSING IT

I NEED A GIF OF GENJI DOING HIS DASH AND GETTING HANZO BY THE THROAT WITH HIS SWORD

Exactly.

Do you not like multiplayer shooters?

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Fantastic visuals as always, so hype-inducing.

Also, hilarious how that video quite predicted it, after all lol

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
This still makes me wish Blizzard went with a CG Warcraft movie at this level or their intro cinematics for their games instead of the live action mixture we have now. Not that movie won't or can't be good but I just love their cinematics even if I'm not as blown away by the game itself.

I swear Krunkidile is gonna get subscribers out the ass because of that Honorwatch video.

He deserves it. Good guy and a good SFM animator.

Yeah, pretty much. Granted, he was mostly on the money, which is hilarious. I pretty much laughed when the short did indeed start off with Hanzo infiltrating the castle and killing yakuza dudes.

The game can stand on its own. The shorts just give the characters a little bit of flavour. A character bio taken one step farther. But the game doesn't need them to stand firmly on its own legs. It's just... How should I put it. When you play Majora's Mask, the characters clearly have so much more behind them, you want to learn more about them. It's not necessary for the game to work, but it's there. Same here. There's more to the world than the game can portray, even though the game itself is pretty fine. It's better than sacrificing gameplay to any kind of lore.

I wonder how long it took them to make something like this? Blizzard certainly have style.

No clue but if they make one for him...it will be embarrassing and insulting.

Well I'm pretty sure this one was embarrassing and insulting to any Japanese person lol.

Please dont confuse my ignorance for racism...

That being said, why was this insulting to someone who's Japanese?

Why would Lucio's be insulting?

What am I missing? I thought this short was awesome, really hit me in the feelers..

Also is Kung Fu Panda considered insulting? Am I that out of touch? :|

Fun short and very pretty even though I don't like the game's trope-heavy/focus-tested character designs. The writing is a little better than their typical stuff too.

I want a new voice line after the game releases of Hanzo just going "Tough shit"

Or "Man, fuck you"

MGR was made by Japanese, along with hundreds of comic books and TV shows about over-the-top ninjas this takes direct inspiration from but nice try.

Talking for a culture you're not a part of always works great doesn't it.

Thought this was pretty sweet. Not sure if I'll actually play the game as I've never been huge on multiplayer stuff and missed the beta, but I do enjoy the world they've created here.

But this is like Mulan (but instead of chinese you have japanese), not MGR.

Having a campaign is a waste and will be nothing like this.
These animated shorts are meant to wet your tounge and get you a feel of the world and characters. They just need to continue doing these shorts, WAY BETTER

This not having any single player campaign is just a massive waste of potential

Having a well refined and incredible multiplayer that can capture the imaginations and hearts of its player base sounds like good work to me.

Who knows what was done for the MMO before the project changed.

I think it was mostly predictable because the hints in the Hanamura map, video previews, and from the character interactions pretty much gave away what was going to happen in this short.
