Speaking from the Land of Dreams: Who could Make a New SOCOM?

Now, now, I know many of you will say SOCOM is dead so shut up and move on. But God dammit I don't wanna.

So, after playing some of Uncharted online yesterday, I got to thinking. Here's a 3rd person shooter, plays nothing like SOCOM did but still. Could Naughty Dog's multiplayer team lead a SOCOM revival? It would be a dream to have a team with that technical prowess make a SOCOM game since they always seem to be lacking in that department. But let's be real, naughty dog is not gonna be wasted on a SOCOM game.

What are the options? Who could it be? What about Bluepoint Games? They seem like Remaster experts, they could probably cobble together a SOCOM 2 remaster as good as any one else.

I've already got my dream game (SOCOM ps4) but I still can't figure out my dream developer for it. Thoughts SOCOM fans?

I long for the day they announce a socom hd collection with full online and fixes. Just to hold us over until socom 5 is created as a true socom game and nothing like the abomination of socom 4.

In a post-COD4 world, I really don't think a barebones MP game like SOCOM would thrive. I say this as someone who spent hundreds of hours on PS2 playing the original handful of SOCOMs. I love and respect the old games, but I don't think that they'd find a huge playerbase today.

It'd probably need experience-based progression and unlocks like all modern day FPS MP games, and I think that could really end up feeling awkward. Did the later PS3 games do this? I never got a chance to try them.

Is it really "barebones" if all the weapons are unlocked at the beginning? I don't really understand that. SOCOM 2 was definitely not barebones though. That game launched with like 22 maps, full community clan support, lobbies and ability to make private rooms. Honestly SOCOM 2 online had features that I would kill for. So far from barebones.

Its best to just have it stay dead. The series thrived when it was the only thing on the PS2, but died just as quick as their was a working online system for PS3. It was a terrible game, where players heavily overlooked the half ass development since there was nothing else at the time. Its best to leave it in the past with those rose tinted glasses.

Great maps though.

If you want to give it to anyone, give it to Ready At Dawn and have them redo Confrontations.

I always felt that naughty dog would make a great socom. I wouldn't mind slant six getting another crack at confrontation 2. Yes the game had problems but it was all technical. The game felt like socom and it had friggin crossroads. I just don't understand how they could green light a shenmue or a Gravity Rush 2, but are too scared to spend a little money on a socom 2 hd port. What are you so afraid of? It won't cost the price of a AAA title and you will make the fans happy. Sony boggles my fucking mind sometimes. They're sitting on a goldmine and they refuse to use it.

Please refer to first sentence(s) of OP ;)

I don't know about gold mine but I think it would definitely have a good enough fan base. Look at the resurgence of Ratchet, these games that are not AAA but have a legitimate following can still do well.

Slant Six is dead though, they're not making any game ever they don't exist anymore lol.

Disagree

Rainow 6 siege is thriving and it's because of pure gameplay.

People consider it totally barebones. No SP. Lame co-op. But the PVP is so good that despite all kinds of issues, people continue to play it because it's so damn good

SOCOM has a future. Sony just needs to do it justice. And unlike Rainbow 6, SOCOM could do so well as a MP only title released for $40.00. Make money off of dance taunts, some customization like Siege has, and maybe even timed map pack dlc.

Rainbow Six Siege is the best example. I think something made in that vein would work for Socom. a important factor would be no DLC to fragment the player base though. Who would make it? I'm not too sure on that.

I think a SOCOM 2 remaster would go even further than Siege did just because of what came in the original package. 22 maps!!!! Just astounding to think about today. The SOCOM gameplay and maps also in my opinion had more depth to them than Siege does. I really like and enjoy siege but I think the scale is a lot more focused than SOCOM.

I'm speaking mainly about player progression through an experience-based unlock system.

I think CSGO is one of the only "barebones" games that does this today successfully. Maybe recent HALO and DOOM games are other examples too?

I feel that the expectation for modern shooters (COD and BF) is that everything is tied to the stuff I mentioned above.

SOCOM could do it for stuff like attachments, weapon upgrades, and various cosmetic items, I guess?

Disagree

To my original point, R6S has experience-based (well, renown) progression system with unlockable upgrades. It's very much in-line with expectations the COD and BF crowd have for that kind of stuff.

I think that R6S proves that no-respawn modes work outside of CSGO and players are willing to embrace that, so I agree with you on that front.

There isnt much you really unlock though. Mostly operators and gun skins. I dont see why SOCOM cant have gun skins and other customization

In fact, SOCOM is known for dance taunts. They can sell a crapload of those. It can work.

Its dead brother, I'm sorry. I don't think Sony has any interest in a revival. I'm content with my memories of staying up till 4am in the summer doing clan wars from GameBattles in original SOCOM

Contract somebody like Yager or if the guys who made starhawk are still around ask them.

I liked the fact that SOCOM didn't have classes. I don't think not having a structure that limits user accessibility to weapons really makes it "bare-bones". Doesn't the progression based mode you're describing in fact create a false sense of achievement if anything? They're limiting what you start with I don't understand why gameplay and maps and game modes isn't enough when you start with everything unlocked. I don't think you need an incentive to play a competitive tactical shooter, other than tou enjoy the game and the competition. I honestly think that's enough.

Let us dream dammit!! Did e3 last year not make it clear we can dream!!

I want to come up with extraction plans for the hostages/VIPs in Foxhunt. What awesome gameplay. Seperate all 3? Hide one and take 2 and kill the 3rd if you make it. Bring them to the church and tactically hold the church down. I remember being the last one alive with one hostage left against 5 and I hid that hostage in the grass next to a wall and picked off the whole enemy team with a silenced weapon.

Some of my fondest gaming memories with SOCOM 2.

Lol, fox hunt was a great map, honestly all of the maps on SOCOM 2 were Atleast good while most were great. But back on topic, which developer brings us back to our much deserved glory!!!!!???

Lol incognito is dead too. So far all of your suggestions are other dead studios!

Well I was talking about if some of the people were still open contract from those dead studios?

So maybe make another small studio? Maybe Machine gun games, guys who made wolfenstein?

Sony pulling their head out of their ass and realising that there's enough demand for a remaster to be profitable.

Would be great if they put a team together for the project. I bet David Sears would jump on an offer to make a legit SOCOM for Sony in a heartbeat.

US West 2

Bdacuse US West 1 was always full.

I'd kill for a SOCOM revival. Uncharted 4's MP makes me feel similar, OP.

I don't know who I'd want leading it though. I guess ND could do it. I think the $40 MP-only game is a great idea.

Is R6: Siege good at scratching that itch, too?

(Foxhunt was best map, and no one likes Shadow Falls)

I think a $40 MP-only remake of SOCOM 2 would sell great. Literally would be the game of my life lol.

And dude, everybody hated shadow falls until they actually really played it. Very underrated map!!

As for Siege, it's a good game and does scratch that itch a little bit. But not enough!

I loved Shadows Falls layout. But the map being too dark made it difficult to play in. There aren't any good tactical TPS at this point. That's one thing I loved about Socom and that was having to strategize at times to get the win.

I would love a new SOCOM. I had so many great hours with friends playing 1 & 2. As for the studio I agree that ND could do it justice. I was always so surprised how well TLOU multi was.

Sony really needs to give the fans a parting gift if the series is done or will be on hiatus for an extended period of time. Just do SOCOM 2 HD with online play.

East 5, represent.

I have Socom Flashbacks when I play Metal Gear Online. They can either A) add Socom type game modes / options/ settings

or

B) create the next Socom using that team / Fox Engine / etc. ( Konami won't let it happen)

I think If the demand is there they'll eventually give us something. They acknowledged SOCOM at PSX, they didn't need to do that but they did. That tells me they're listening and they usually eventually respond for their fanbase. So im hoping a little more patience and Shu will come through!

I don't think Sony would let Konami touch the franchise lol. And i wouldn't want them too honestly.

Count me in for keeping it dead. It was fun while it lasted.

Oh, remember that kick starter from David Sears to fund H-Hour... What happened to that? That was probably a good way to tell how many hard core Socom fans were still interested.

So a failed Kickstarter that was funded is now the community's fault? Very flawed and incorrect logic. They were bamboozled if anything.

The game released on Steam as early access, btw.

It did and it was a steaming pile of shit, no pun intended lol. That's not at all on the community though. They wanted a game so desperately that they funded SoF studios and SoF gave them a pile of shit in return.

Just give me a PS2 Classics version on PS4. Don't even care about an HD upgrade (would be nice though), just give me the chance to play it again.

Give me Timesplitters also...

I'd take a $40 Socom 2 HD remaster. Abandoned has to be a day map like it was in Socom 1 or no buy.

Shu mentioned something about online not being set up if they do the HD port for the ps2 on ps4 if I recall.

Yea h-hour seems to be moving pretty slow with development and they need additional investors in order to bring it over to ps4 (currently pc only). Not sure when or if that will actually happen. Here's hoping!

The game released on Steam as early access, btw.

The "game" was their proof of concept they shopped to investors for over a year. Sears left the project, it was hidden from the community, people started to wonder where he went cause he hadn't spoken about the game in months, nothing was said, fans got angrier, SOF Studios shut down the forums, banned a ton of people, and released a statement about how he had been gone for awhile and it wasn't their job to foster a community. Fast forward to no real talent working on the game and they released what they had on Early Access in an attempt to make some money to actually fund some development. They've added some maps, but that's about it. I believe they released a statement a month or two back basically stating the project is "on hold" until they can secure an investor.

I'd take a $40 Socom 2 HD remaster. Abandoned has to be a day map like it was in Socom 1 or no buy.

It needs to be SOCOM 2 + the SOCOM 1 versions of some maps (layout changes + its still the same engine) and the SOCOM 2 HDD maps. It'd bring the potential map count to like 28 maps in a S2 Remaster.

You could do SOCOM 2 HD for $40 and then charge for the extra maps from Socom 1 and 2's "DLC" even!

I'd want the campaign to stay though. Make it co-op even!

I'm just saying, I heard very little chatter, news, hype or interest from anyone outside of that little circle of fans that gave a crap.

What was the goal like 125k? To build a demo to show to potential investors I think... Didn't look so hot though. Their kick starter was smart I'll give them that. Used all the right buzz words an old socom player would love to hear.

It was the best shooter on PS2 because it was the only online shooter on PS2. That's about it.

Not offended, just realistic... it looked like hot garbage and they won't get my money for a remaster. Socom nostalgia trips down memory lane are nice but no matter how many "Socom 2 HD" petitions are signed and thrown at Sony or who ever they're not biting.

Nowadays not having matchmaking ain't going to work, relying on a small dedicated community isn't going to cut it when even budget games cost tens of millions to make.
