Preacher |OT| The Beginning Is Nigh - Sundays 10/9c on AMC

There's no need for name-calling. It's absolutely okay to be wary of an adaptation when there has been precedent with mangled, poorly-written adaptations (TWD, GoT), and in this case, major characters like Herr Starr or the Saint of Killers have not even been cast (but other minor characters like Odin Quincannon have, plus new characters), and moreover, there has never been any major TV shows as "blasphemous" as the content of the original comic so the worries that it'll be toned down are not unwarranted.

But sure, I hear ya. Every time a critic voices an objection to adapted material it's invariably because they're a raging nerd who refuses to see a single word changed. Right...

I wouldn't believe from this post that you are one of the people who joins us in watching Lucifer.

I didn't know this was coming so soon
I read the first few issues of the comic and I am pretty interested in this, I hope it delivers

I'm a bit apprehensive as someone who really enjoys the comics (but haven't finished them yet) and has been burned by the AMC TWD show. But if the different start is due to money then I could give them leeway at first.

Have they stripped away the supernatural elements? It seemed that way from the trailer.

No, the opening scene of the series (on youtube) shows
Genesis(?) coming down from space (in a very 50's sci-fi fashion)and going into the body of an African preacher but he can't handle it and explodes
.

Arseface lol, can't wait to hear how he speaks. And Jackie Earle Haley is the Saint of killers? Kind of short but we will see how it goes

So im sure this show might be plagued with 'book readers' shitting all over it but apparently the critics are hype on this. This might be great.

- Variety: TV Review: ‘Preacher’.
It’s unclear how dominant, or effective, those tangential elements of the series will be. What’s certain is that “Preacher’s” pilot leaves no space for middle-of-the-road sentiment; you’re either all in or you’re not. That also means Rogen and Goldberg succeeded in realizing what was heretofore considered to be an impossible project — and they’ve done so with amazing panache.

What a bizarre and wonderful time to be alive for comic fans. TWD, Daredevil, Preacher, Gotham and even all those other tweeny DC shows. 20 years ago I would have called you insane if you had told me what we'd be watching this year.

For me, this is the one show where I really didn't want any deviations just because of how shocking it would be. I mean the comic book contains a scene where the descendant of Marquis De Sade offers the main characters "chocolate ice cream" this chocolate ice cream happens to be De Sade's Shit covered fist after he fisted some dude in a gimp suit right in front of everyone.

I mean that isn't even the most fucked or disturbing or crazy thing that happens in that book by a long shot.

That said, I hope they get the Saint of All Killers right, dude was so fucking awesome in the comic book.

I still can't believe they actually made this. Needed to be on a different channel, like Starz or Cinemax though. Don't want a toned down show at all.

But yeah, I'm in.

Those first five minutes posted on the Facebook page looked almost perfect. I'm confident now, hope the spirit is really there.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I'm curious how many later characters and elements will be introduced into this sort of prequel starter season. Mainly I'm curious to see if we meet Jesse's umm... colorful family.

- THR: 'Preacher': TV Review.
Preacher comes on aggressively, but the third and fourth episodes give Catlin and the writers the chance to explore some of bigger picture theological issues and hint at growing maturity, even if that maturity still comes with gruesome jokes and pop culture references galore. Even in its most unsteady early moments, Preacher parlays its messiness into an anarchy that's thematically on-point.
- Slate: Preacher Review.
AMC’s stylish, wry, blasphemous new series deserves to become as big a hit as The Walking Dead.

So if this season is a prequel season, is he not going to have his powers?

Gets them in the first episode if I'm not mistaken. Prequel is a bit misleading. More like a what if the town didn't get blown up from the start and they hung out there for a while. Building things up instead of hitting ground running and going on the road trip like the comics.

Possibly my favourite character in the whole series. With Herr Starr a close second, quite possibly just for the hilarity that ensues every time he met the members of Jesse's gang.

They cut TWD second season budget by 20% despite adding additional episodes. Heck the entire series has an air of cheapness about it. Google doesn't really need to tell you that.

AMC is no HBO. Mad Men was really the only show they were willing to extend a hefty budget too throughout that whole era. I'm honestly shocked this is being treated like anything other then common knowledge at this point.

- EW: Preacher: EW review.
Throughout Preacher, you’ll switch back and forth between rolling your eyes and not wanting to blink. “Boring is the worst thing a person could be,” Cassidy suggests to Custer. And that’s true for a TV show, too. B+
- New York Post: ‘Preacher’ will revive your faith in comic-book fare.
Whether “Preacher” can grab and hold a large audience like “The Walking Dead” remains to be seen, but its first few episodes hold out hope there’s life beyond zombies.

I'll eat my hat if they actually show the last scene with
God
and Saint of Killers. Supernatural gets away with similar stuff, they really just have to nail the tone of Preacher.

Maybe. But I pretty much never liked a single thing Neil Gaiman ever wrote so...

Mike Carey wrote it. So... ;)

I thought he was the creator. Hmm

He was. Character is a spin-off from Sandman but its very different. Mike Carey is an absolutely superb writer, especially when it comes to Magnificent Bastards. He had an absolutely phenomenal, series-best (IMO) run on Hellblazer around the same time (I believe). Seriously, its top-tier work.

Which is a great fucking comic.

It absolutely is, but its an acquired taste.

Saint of Killers still hasn't been cast yet. Crossing my fingers for Danny Trejo.

Trejo wouldn't fit the idea of being a seven foot tall uber pissed off confederate killing machine cowboy incarnation of death and this is from someone who likes Trejo. Honestly if he was a bit younger I would have thought Eastwood might have done the part justice, maybe Henry Fonda after his turn as Frank in Once Upon A Time in the West.

I also think after Dredd Karl Urban could do it, man has the scowl down just give him some greasy ass long white hair, make him scowl till his face breaks, and give him two guns that never miss and always kill.

I don't recognize half the characters listed. I suspect they may be from later issues, but it'd defi itely be weird for them to appear before the Saint of Killers, who is in Issue 1.

I'll give it a tentative shot, but I lament that we still live in such an imperfect world that the 11pm timeslot isn't really a prime thing because that would be ideal following GoT and PD---gotta try to wrangle the DVR for some hopeful late night re-runs same as for Bourdain.

Not really. They've explicitly stated they aren't transcribing the comic page by page onto TV. Garth Ennis himself told them it would be stupid to try and do a totally faithful adaptation of the comic and rather they should be faithful to the spirit and not the letter of the comic. A lot of it is going be different. From certain characters, their backgrounds and roles, to especially plot events and how the story unfolds. Some stuff will be the same and some stuff will be new and different. I think the biggest hurdle for some fans will be accepting the fact that this isn't and never really could be, regardless of network or production, a 1:1 recreation of the comic.

This is why I'm still sad we never got the HBO adaptation, if I remember correctly the scripts that were turned in were very close to the source material. Then again HBO turned it down because of how controversial it would be and who knows, maybe budget was an issue as we know they're constantly having issues with it as GoT went on.

I also don't mind if there are changes and adaptations but I do worry that the show runners don't have as good a grasp on the characters and story as they say they do. We always hear about how much creators love the original source material and then get horribly butchered adaptations. As I said I'm holding my breath in hopes this is good but I'm nervous after seeing a bunch of arbitrary changes that will ruin moments down the line.

So I watched the pilot last night. Preacher is my second favorite comic series ever behind The Sandman.

I loved it.

Yes, the plot is different, but the changes allow it to function better as a weekly TV show rather than a beat-by-beat adaptation. It's still dark, it's still funny, it's still southern as fuck, and the action scenes are great.

I'm very excited to see what's coming next.
