Nerdleaks: Sony Santa Monica's cancelled IP; futuristic, dinosaurs.

Yeah it sounds like a cool concept but it got cancelled because it wasn't working. Did you guys really wanted them to waste more 3 years on it?

futuristic; strange planet; strange creatures & dinosaurs
aka
Horizon?

So yeah you don't want 2 games that look that much a like from a first party I assume.

Deep down I wish Sony Santa Monica would have persued a different game and followed through with it. Although they incubate other projects as part of their ex-dev efforts, last gen SSM proper (meaning the studio who ships AAA games) only released God of War 3 and Ascension which were awesome but to me the GoW franchise was starting to wear thin.

If the rumors are true and SSM is developing a new God of War game but in a different setting then I'll be disappointed. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that if the rumors are true, it'll still be a GoW game. Fast action, hack/slash, roll and dodge, QTEs etc. The core gameplay loop will probably be the same or an iteration of the same core gameplay loop that were the bread and butter of the past GoW games.

I wanted them to do something completely different, something surprising, unexpected etc. Guerilla were the shooter guys, Killzone over and over (mind you I loved those games and would like a remaster) but with Horizon, Guerilla is doing something completely different. From primarily being a FPS dev to making an open-world, rpg with a red headed woman as the main protagonist. Fucking awesome, and that's what I want outta SSM.

Not another GoW game.

Hmm, we don't know what they're planning with the series going forward. I have faith in Cory Barlog. He made a great second game, and I know he can do the job with this one as well. I have a feeling they will change the combat mechanics greatly to suit the new mythology. The blades, even though iconic, need to go.

To be fair, SSM has Cory Barlog and I like you have faith in the guy. He did make the best GoW in the franchise in my opinion with 2.

Reading my post again, I'm coming off as super down on SSM but let me be clear, I have no doubt that this project of theirs will be awesome.

Found a screenshot.

But they got that chance. It just didn't work out.

Of course a new Dinosaur game would be canceled. The Stars have just stayed aligned to deny any big Dino games from happening currently.

Horizon is a consolation prize, it's kinda dinosaurs but not really. They've been pushing its more robo animals.

It's a god-fucking-shame that it didn't pan out. They worked on that for a long time and it was uber interesting compared to what will propably end up being a tired old God of War game with super good visuals. That's a little hyperbolic but it's because this was one of the biggest disappointments for me in the recent years. It pains me that a new thing didn't work and they had to revert back GOW which I never liked tbh.

I mean they really don't need PETA all over this one...robo animals is probably a good choice.

I don't know if I heard it here or on other forum but it had some new kind of innovative UI. Was somewhat similar to destiny. They wanted to incorporate seamless maker combat with shooting

The only positive I see from this is that of Sony themselves were eyeing a dinosaur game, other studios must be thinking on the idea as well. Since much like Hollywood all of the big devs seem to follow each other a bit with their ideas.

This is really surprising to me.

Sony Santa Monica have only output quality top notch titles in the past 10 years or so right?

What gives?

Well, the new God of War game supposedly has a whole different mythological setting. The setting was a big part of the series, and with that changed/revamped, there's a potential for a whole new slew of kickass and fresh ideas in store.

I'm going to need more than that, I'm going to need a new main character which I suspect is not going to happen. Kratos is the most unlikeable, dour dude I can remember ever playing as.

Wow would love to see some concept art or something from this cancelled project..

I'm guessing the art direction must've been stellar considering it had dinosaurs. Maybe some elements will be taken into their new IP after GoW Norse edition.

Game development in the AAA space is hard and massively complicated.

Sometimes, it all just can't come together even with the right talent and its best to bin a project before dumping even more millions into something that isn't "fun".

So couldn't SSM go back to this title in the future and see if they can maybe resurrect the project? Or maybe bring in help? Surely there must be tons of stuff they could use?

Hopefully some concept art surfaces. It's not like there's an abundance of games with dinosaurs so maybe they can resurrect the project in the future.
