Games that failed to launch a new franchise

No one has mentioned The Legend of Dragoon? It was supposed to be Sony's Final Fantasy.

It's not a bad game by any means, just not that well executed.

Akuun

Looking for meaning in GAF
Bulletstorm.

It teases a sequel in the main game, but it'll probably never happen because of poor sales.

Which sucks, because the game is a lot of fun.

God damnit Ubisoft, just because you get a little critique, you just go ahead and end a series.

The ending was a cliffhanger

Heck, the DLC ending is STILL a cliffhanger.

Would have freaking loved to see a sequel.

Wow for how much GAF loves platinum no one has said Vanquish yet. Game ended on a cliffhanger for god sake haha. Sadly we most likely won't get a sequel even tho the first game was a masterpiece :)

Zak and Wiki

The Conduit - i mean it DID get a sequel....but not really a franchise. i'm sure nintendo was hoping for a lot more from it

Would Perfect Dark count? I know, I know it had a prequel but the IP was considered valuable enough for a second game but it ended up going nowhere?

I love perfect Dark, shame about Zero though...

Mercenaries 2 pretty much killed that franchise. I wonder who owns the IP now.

EA, now that Pandemic went under.

EA bought out Pandemic and Bioware around the same time, if I'm not mistaken.

They were well into Mercs 3 development before closing:

The order 1886

Such a cool game, just too many haters

With pretty good reason lol

Don't believe it was posted: Dragon's Dogma

Dragon's Dogma Online, and even Capcom suggested they'd consider a full fledged sequel to the original.

Enslaved: odyssey to the west for me. Really enjoyed that game

A more recent one would be sunset overdrive - good fun

I know Acclaim was in the early stages of working on a sequel to the JJ Abrams TV show licensed Alias game before shelving the project.
Also Namco had hopes of turning Death by Degrees into its own (Tekken spin-off) franchise, but then it sold poorly.

Nintendo may have saved Bayonetta 2 but I don't think there will be another.
I actually think we'll see a third game on NX. Nintendo clearly see value in the character.

Kingdoms of Amalur was planned as a franchise but it was not to be.

Too Human thread? Too Human thread.

They oversold it and tried to make it a trilogy from the get go. Was pretty clunky and awful tbh.

Man, I know the game wasn't perfect, but what was there I thought was pretty fun. Enough so that I'm still pretty bummed that we'll never see a proper sequel.

Someone mentioned Freedom Fighters, that too is a sore spot. Such a great game that deserved a sequel. I wonder why it never came together?

Still waiting for that to appear on EU PSN as a PS1 Classic...

On the subject of that I remember there being cancelled DLC for PS All-Stars of Dart. Even had a model in development that was shown off.

Zack & Wiki's ending made me think that Capcom would've liked to make more games in the franchise if the game sold well enough, but it didn't do too well.

Not quite the same thing, but Golden Sun: The Dark Dawn failed to revitalize a franchise.

Skies of Arcadia.

I would include Power Stone here arguably as well. I know we got a sequel, but one sequel for a fighter seems like a failed franchise imo.

In a Dreamcast mood today, apparently.

The ones that frustrate me are where they start a story that is then never concluded. Even worse when the first and final game ends on a cliffhanger or leading up to the next scenario (hi Freedom Wars).

Loads of generic sci-fi shooters last gen. Brink, Haze, Fuse, Bulletstorm etc etc.

Darksiders was supposed to have a game for each horseman right? I really liked those games too, they reminded me of Legacy of Kain. Too bad THQ died.

This is kind of a strange topic, as most big-budget games which come out nowadays are expected to be the start of a franchise.

Recently, I'd say The Order 1886 for Sony, and I think sales of Quantum Break have been pretty poor so I wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't get a sequel either.

On a similar note, you might be able to say the same thing for Binary Domain.

Came here to post this.

Had its issues, which all could have been addressed in a sequel. But besides the bit of a mixed reception, I think the urge to get a quasi tie-in game out for the PoP movie was the final nail in the coffin.
