If any shop has a freeze ray, you can grab it, shoot the shopkeeper, and jump on him for an instant kill. With regular shops it's 100% guaranteed, 100% risk free. In the market, the biggest danger would be the next-door shopkeeper, but if you're fast enough you should be able to grab the shotgun of the just-shattered shopkeeper and blast the live one, especially if you killed the first as far away from the second as you can (the first one will follow you as soon as you grab the freeze ray, so positioning him is easy).

There should never be a damaging drop in the main path of a level, but you might have to hang from the edge before jumping down, and/or land on elevated blocks. In theory it should be possible to complete the game without using a single rope or taking fall damage. By the way, even though you can catch an edge while falling to completely negate fall damage, again, the game will never force to do this to avoid damage.

Also, to hang from an edge, do not crouch-walk towards it; doing so makes you drop your held item. Instead, walk off, then immediately hold the opposite direction as you fall. With some practice you can do this 100% of the time, even running.

Well aware that the freeze ray makes killing single, neutral shopkeepers easy. I was saying that it is not useful in a black market situation, or at least that there is no reason to do so when you can use the tactic I detailed in my post. Grabbing ledges is incredibly useful, especially on the Ice Caves, but as far as dealing with long drops in general when there are no ledges to grab onto or it's difficult (ledges don't line up), you can just learn how far you can fall without taking fall damage. Look down, and you can safely fall to the second block from the bottom (this means no jumping obviously, and if you hang from the ledge and drop you can get one more block).

Wait, if you freeze a shopkeeper, the fame won't set the aggro flag and other shopkeepers won't be mad? Am I reading that right?

No, shopkeepers will be aggroed as soon as you shoot the freeze ray.

Also, Spelunky's getting an update!

The new Spelunky update contains a couple added features, but is mostly bug fixes. The biggest addition is a less intrusive HUD option.

Be careful not to fire the freeze ray at a distance.. if you do it'll give the shopkeeper enough time to squeeze off a shot at you. Learnt it the hard way. :(

Ah, damn. Yes I found this out. The music plays while he's frozen until you destroy him. Oh well. At least it's an easy quick kill.

Does that count the Steam version too? Andy Hull's Twitter description says he develops the XBLA version. Did he handle porting the other ports too? And if not, are the features still coming to the other ports? Because it seems they have enough problems getting simple features to other versions like Daily Challenge which I understand still isn't on the XBLA version.

It would be for the Steam version. Andy Hull is the programmer of the game. PC version was not outsourced.

I don't know if the daily challenge on xbox is a "technical issue" or a "updating things on xbox costs money" issue.

I assume it says Spelunky XBLA on his profile because he put it there years ago and never changed it. Vita port was handled by a third party, but I forget if Mossmouth itself did the work for the PS3 version. Of course the PC version will receive the update, and I would expect PS3/Vita to as well; as you noted, XBLA version is behind because of the cost of MS certification for patches so I wouldn't expect it to be rolled out for 360.

According to a random person on Twitter replying to that very Tweet, Microsoft dropped the cost for updates last year.

But then again according to another replier to that reply, it only applies to the XBone.

So... is there an update cost or not on the 360?

Huh. I guess that actually is something that happened, and almost a whole year ago to boot: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...rges-developers-to-patch-their-xbox-360-games

OK, in that case I'm not sure why the 360 version doesn't have the daily challenge. :p

Well, it seems much safer to use the freeze gun to me, but everyone has their preferences. :)

FUCK YES THAT UI! At long last! So sick of spiders lurking in the UI, man! Also, are the "current level" and "run time" indicators new as well? I for one can't remember the timer.

Fake edit: Played the daily to check if the level indicator is new too, which it is. That's actually pretty nice. Also, beat the game doing the daily; first time doing so, second time doing an ironman run (first one on PC), and first time even reaching the temple on PC. Nice! I missed the Black Market entrance, though.

Warning for those doing today's daily on PC: Olmec's Lair seems to have zero bombs today, be sure to stock on them if your strategy revolves around them. I had six and it was plenty, though.

There is actually basically zero risk in the bombing the ledge method, it's not just a preference thing. And yeah, the new UI is pretty ugly but it's nice to have a less intrusive overlay and the timer is welcome for both speedrunning and knowing exactly when the ghost will spawn.

exciting times

So who of you is playing the daily challenge? I want some new guys on my leaderboards, so feel free to add me, I'm gringor on steam. http://steamcommunity.com/id/Gringor?l=german

added you , im also looking for peeps to add for the daily run challenges.

http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197968961479/

I average somewhere between 100-200k usually.
Excellent initiative, added you both. :)

It's pretty much impossible to do so anyway, as the shopkeeper will be on you like white on rice once you pick up any item.

Oh, I see. Somehow I read your first comment as "There's a really risky way of robbing the black market." rather than "That's a really risky way of robbing the black market.". :D Will try your way next time I get there, thanks!
One thing though; can you "drop bombs" when you have the glue? Perhaps by edgegrabbing first? That's an issue I've been having every time I've wanted to throw a bomb down a narrow hole, its diagonal path means it always sticks either on the ground up top or on the walls.

I am thoroughly disgusted with my Daily Challenge performance, didn't even make it out of the Mines -_-. I really wish they would let you replay it and just have it not count or something.

Would defeat the purpose of the Daily Challenge.

Warm up before challenging by playing a few rounds.

made it to olmec for the first time today... during my daily challenge run! Did have any bombs when I got there though, I found six up top and was almost able to beat him, but I didn't quite have enough to make enough room to get out. But I finished at with like 120k so it was a good daily. Number 106 overall on Vita.

Looking for more PSN friends to do the daily challenge with. PSN ID: EasyTGT

That new UI is a very good addition, and I'm glad they're also fixing bugs like the Ankh interaction when you pause or alt-tab the game.

I don't spoil myself for dailies, but I made the mistake of having too few bombs yesterday on PC. Olmec's Lair only gave me Spectacles and I think a stack of ropes in the only two crates available there. Was well on my way to succesfully use the no-bomb method, but a little ditch on the way to the entrance of Hell screwed up my timing and Olmec swiftly crushed me when he moved an inch to the left as a result.

I do.

Really though I'd more just like to be able to run the same seed repeatedly so me and my wife can do the same runs so she can see what I do and vice versa; I should probably look into that mod.

Well, I learned yet another lesson today. Was doing super well in the mines on the daily just now and then got blown to bits. From the wiki:

Do not place the bomb directly against the powder box or it will explode immediately like when hit by any other object.

Bah. :/

The Daily Challenge today is pretty rich and has a lot of conveniently placed stuff. Had my best run (Daily Challenge or no) ever on it, cleared 200k even though I died to Olmec because I am still terrible :(. But people should have a field day with this one honestly, scores are going to be high.

Can people specify PSN or Steam when talking dailies? I'm booting up my PS3 now and don't know whether to expect the above or not!

After two amazing practice runs, I died on 1-2 on the Daily Challenge. Hardest I have ever choked in my life, holy shit I don't even.

Not the greatest score ever, but somehow good enough for #4 on Vita! By far the highest I've ranked in my short time of doing the daily challenge. I even bought the Ankh and a bunch of bombs (and then accidentally set off the shopkeepers anyway) in hopes of seeing the City of Gold for the first time, had everything going for me but simply could not find Anubis in 4-1 of all things. Had tons of bombs though, so Olmec was easy peasy.

I feel like my skill has dropped after beating the main game, and more often than not I'm dead before I even reach the Ice caves now, lol

I think it's because I'm playing more risky/looty (need 50k for the black market), and am not so afraid of killing shopkeepers (you don't always have 50k for the black market :p) etc.

Need to go to the golden city, or do an Ironman run!!

Wiping the black market is pretty fun btw :D

Clearing the black market is fun, I just need to work on my speed. Usually by the time I grab the Ankh, the ghost shows up and I freak out and I do something stupid.

There really aren't enough people playing this on PSN considering it's been available for $3.74 a bunch of times. It's sad. The Steam leaderboards are way more competitive for the daily.

That is pretty sad, especially considering the Vita is the best way to play. I didn't even realize they added the daily challenge in until a couple weeks ago. I bought the game at launch, but the daily challenge really reinvigorated my love of it (and owning a Vita now too).

Yeah, that's what I meant. If I had a way of practicing the actual daily challenge then only getting to 1-2 after that then fuck man lol. I've only looked a bit at the link for the mod, but doesn't that only just let you generate and re-run specific seeds? I don't think there's any way to specifically run the daily multiple times, unless people have reverse engineered the seed it uses on a daily basis or something.

Oh my god. I finally got through the Jungle with a shotgun.

I got the shotgun on 2-4 from a reluctant shopkeeper who just happened to be selling a freeze ray. Thankfully it was on 2-4 so I didn't have to worry about another one at the next level exit and could give Tunnel Man what he wanted. Here you go! Here's your shotgun! Now give me a tunnel!

So then I made my way carefully through the Ice Caves. Thankfully the shop I stole the gun from had gloves and I was using a cape I bought legit earlier in the game. The shop also had a compass which made the Ice Caves a snap, though I had to be so cautious as everything was out to get me.

And finally after 4 levels I made it to the Tunnel Man again. Three bombs please! Here you go! So now I'm one step out of three from unlocking the Temple. Though I'm not really looking forward to the part of the run where I need to carry the gold key all the way there. That's gonna be a lot of fun I bet.

So now here I am at the start of 4-1 and I'm scared out of my wits. I've never been here before and I'm terrified and down to 2 hearts (I made it all the way through the Ice Caves with 1 heart and got a second by bringing the damsel into the exit of 3-4.) Anubis is determined to get me with his purple rings. I wish I'd thought to record this run.

Edit: Yep. Killed by a Mummy because two of them were blocking my only way through on 4-2 and I used all my bombs on the previous level.

I just found out the daily challenge is the same for everyone :O

I just thought it was a single chance to post a good score on a random roll. holy fuck I'll take this more seriously now.

http://steamcommunity.com/id/dogfish182/home/

if anyone wants to add me on steam. most of the time I just fall on the first spike, then reach the city of gold playing adventure mode the game directly after...

also, what is the scoring based on for daily, just a money run? So you should score as much cash as you can and do nothing else?

I posted my story in the other thread but long story short, in the same run I both unlocked the final Temple shortcut AND beat Olmec! All thanks to a very convenient last minute jetpack.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=100250861&postcount=1202
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUCK YEAH!

Finally. After two sad deaths while attempting a Key Run I finally gave that son of a bitch the key he's been waiting for.

Fuck yes.

I had a compass I found in a box. A bottle of glue I got from a spider. And a glove I also bought in the Jungle for $12,000. But I didn't have the one thing that could really help.

I walked into the Ice Temple 3-1 and saw a completely innocent looking crate up on a ledge. On a whim I opened it. A fucking JETPACK! I was estatic! Exactly what I was wishing for. Literally right there inside the entry room to the caves. The one thing I really could have used in the Jungle, but oh well. It was late, but fuck it was here now! I made so much use out of that. The compass guided me to the exits and the jetpack made sure I made it there with no trouble at all.

On 3-4 I got a Fourth of July feel. I was tempted. I wanted to go to the Mothership for the heck of it. I mean the Tunnel Man appears there and then again when you finish 3-4 again later so why not? I didn't want to chance it. So I decided to take the normal exit.

BAM! Here's your damn key, Mr. Tunnel Man!

Now what? I guess I'll keep going. Off into the Temple.

4-1: Hmm. No Anubis? He's ALWAYS waiting for me at the entrance. Guess he must of overslept. Jetpacked around all the hazards. Leapfrogging a few Thwomps. One last tunnel to the exit, FUCK, skeleton. One heart down. Bah! Oh. Shit. There's Anubis. Guarding the exit. It was tricky but I got in the door.

4-2: Well, there's the City of Gold entrance. One of these days I'll get there! Off to the exit. Of course there's a spike trap next to the door. The game sure likes putting them next to exits. It's always tricky. Of course this time there was one on each side, and I have a glove. So I threw one of my bombs at it. Bam, down to one. Out the door like a thief in the night.

4-3: Almost there! How have I made it this far? I always fail so badly. How am I doing so well? Surely I won't make it to Olmec. Ever. Never ever. Something is going to, oops, almost crushed by a Thwomp. These suckers are tricky. What was I saying? Oh, hey, there's the ex--fuck, another skeleton. Another heart down... but, I have 4 hearts left for Olmec now. And there's the exit. Only one spike trap this time. Easy peasy, George and Wheezy. Also killed my first Hawkman. So that's something. Okay, fine, he was killed by someone else, but it counted!

It's at this point I regret not recording this run. I did not think I'd get to Tunnel Man let alone Olmec. So I load up ScreenFlow and start recording.

On through the exit, here we go! Last tunnel. Finally get to see the cutscene for myself. Here he comes! A giant sentient rock whose only sole mission is to grind me into a fine paste.

The sky of course is filled with goodies. A few bombs, ropes, a hell of a lot of money, and what's this? A new character! Hooray! After letting him run around for a while I decided to be safe and put him back in his cage to prevent accidental health loss for either of us. After clearing out the sky of all it had to offer I took the 12 bombs I now had and went down to diggy diggy hole. I've watched this done plenty of times. And did pretty well I must say. Especially for a first time. Wasted one bomb by making the rookie mistake of trying to dig the hole along the wall. So I lured him over there and picked a spot in the middle of the room and made my way down. Used 9 out of the remaining 11 to dig all the way to the bottom of the floor. Took some stupid fall damage when I forgot to pump the jetpack which took me down to 2 hearts. Then brought Olmec to his doom. Down into the hole you go! Door unlocked! But first I freed my friend from his cage again (Not that it mattered) and bombed the last two remaining gems out of their holes and threw all 11 ropes of mine into the air in excitement and walked through the door.

$188,250! I started Olmec with $77,000. Time: 22:22.933. Also my new record! On my 805th play through I finally beat Olmec! Cause of death: OLD AGE!

Got the fight on video for posterity and will probably upload it tomorrow.

So now I no longer have to worry about that key anymore and can work on getting to Hell.

Congratulations! I would advise you to do a few Ruins runs now that you've unlocked the shortcut, to get familiar with everything they can throw at you, so that you don't get nervous when the stars line up and manage to get the hedjet and such.

I've tried this game on Ps Vita a few years ago. And did not feel anything. But I was not used to Roguelike games.

In the meantime I've tried, beated and enjoyed Rogue Legacy, The Binding of Isaac, Necrodancer, Risk of Rain. And now I came back to Spelunky.

The game is extremely difficult. I can go till the second level (the Jungle) but it seems I'm really to week for a single run play. Am I missing something? How can I unlock something that makes me stronger?

Thanks for your hints.

You make progress in Spelunky by learning the game through experience. It's a more pure experience than other roguelites, and as such there are no permanently unlockable items or stat boosts.

Thanks mate.

I usually like challenges,
But, as you said, in this game every match is a new experience and you are forced to start from zero. You just have the experience from your previous matches.
From one side this thing is very fascinating, the other side of the medal is that this game is hard as fu*k, harder than all the other roguelikes I've tried.
I've reaced a maximum health of 5 hearts and it takes instants to die :)
