Ubi: NX will "recapture lapsed Wii players," Nintendo "addressing the family market"

I'm taking this with a grain of salt.

I've accepted we likely won't know fuck all about the NX until Nintendo unveil it. All reliable ITKs have hinted at it being decently powerful.

Being "decently powerful" and not being primarily targeted at the Sony/MS demographic aren't mutually exclusive things.

I'd go with both audiences instead of alienating one. If going after casuals again is they're best option, they're wasting their time. That market is gone for godd, and nothing can get them back in a big way. They need a console that most people can enjoy with many different tastes. If that's not feasible, it's time to pack up. And you're wrong, they are not guaranteed 12 million sales at all. Wii U burned a lot of people, and they need to get those people back too. NX console will struggle to sell half of what Wii U did otherwise.

Take your post earlier, where you said you wanted zelda in 1080p60 with 2-4 MSAA.

Now compare that with the E3 social media thread where so many Nintendo fans saying Zelda was best game of show and looked incredible.....

If I was a N exec I would think allot of the fans were satisfied with graphical fidelity, N fans seem to be asking for more output except for a few....judging comments.

Personally, I would like them to make Wii2017 edition, but make the pointer absolute and bring back light gun games and stuff - I would be back in. It offers something different. No console pointer worked absolute like an arcade type light gun game, would love someone to correct that.

Who the hell is gonna make the NX their platform of choice over the PS4, Xbox One, or PC?

Even if NX is very competitive to those platforms, I have a hard time believing that the console buying demographic would say 'fuck it' and jump ship. I say that they position NX as a cheap alternative that could do better to complement the other platforms that go competing.

I'm not on the hybrid train yet, and I don't think that a hybrid would make sense as a family-focused console either. Assuming a console, making something that can play a Wii U game at that level is easy at a $250 price point with modern chips. I'm not sure which specific rumor you're talking about though, and thus don't know why I should believe that said rumor is 100% true.

i think people are constantly overestimating Nintendo's innovation. They struck lightning with Wii but they have shown when they are trying to capture lightning in a bottle they are more like your grandpa trying to learn to use an iphone. Wii U was Nintendo thinking they were being :innovative" with the tablet market. The gimmick with NX for all intents and purposes so far sounds like them trying to be "innovative" with the mobile gaming market. And with Nintendo that could mean them ignoring the most obvious things that make mobile gaming popular and coming up with something silly like 'people really like to be able to play their games anywhere" and then running with that full tilt with blinders on to everything else.

Smart move if it pays off. Not sure how though.

It'd be nice if they actually balanced impressive hardware with accessibility and refined gameplay rather than sacrificing one over the other for once.

Everything we've heard directly from Nintendo with regards to their new console seems to indicate they understand the Wii was a flash in the pan.

We won't be getting a 6 Tflop monster from Nintendo that's for sure. But something around PS4 level and I'm happy. Wii U games have looked fantastic to me (Mario Kart 8, Pikmin 3 and 3D world for example) and I've had most fun this gen on Wii U (W101, Bayonetta 2 and DKC:TF).

Nintendo don't need to compete on a technical level for me to be excited, they artistically out compete majority of Devs artistically to me personally. BOTW being the most talked about e3 game and garnering the most excitement without being a technical showpiece is testament to that.

Nintendo games at a PS4 level of fidelity excites me as a Nintendo game at e3 running on a X360 level device has excited gaf.

Edit: with regards to target demographic Nintendo's comments certainly indicate they know the Wii crowd as moved on. I find Ubi a hard company to take to seriously when making comments like this.

Why is this such a big deal? Nintendo has been trying to capture the family market since the NES, this is nothing different. They are honestly the only one of the big three going for that market.

Here's the thing though, Nintendo isn't worried about you. You are a Nintendo faithful, you are not who is Nintendo trying to get back into their fold.

I agree that's probably their best option at this point. Work hard to have enough power, but still be cheaper than whatever the competition is putting out. If you work hard on being the best secondary/supplementary console out there, you could still have a successful product because nowadays most people don't really just have one system for an entire generation.

This is good news to me. I want a successful console and I like new concepts as long as they are not too shallow. I wonder what the new twist is this time.

That would make sense, but I don't think they be making an NX if they planned to do that. They could just lower the price of the Wii U to do just that.

I'm much more concerned with Nintendo's moving away from lovable characters than I am with a more family-oriented console. What they've done to Paper Mario is a travesty.

Bad news if true. The family/casual direction was a major reason for Wii's underperformance in it's mid to late life, leaving core gaming as secondary, and why they failed with Wii U mostly because they were heavily aimed at this audience.

Nintendo needs to reach core gamers more than anything else. Another system flooded with Wii-like games targeted for family and casuals won't help them.

They're playing them because they already have something to play them on. The only way to go after that audience is to go all-in on mobile. Gaming hardware will never reach them no matter what.

I think you're dead wrong on that. My daughter is 6 and has access to both an iPad and 2DS to play games on. She takes the 2DS 80% of the time if she wants to play a game. There's no reason that Nintendo couldn't recapture that audience if they offer a more intuitive gaming experience, expecially if they have competent Youtube/Netflix/Hulu etc apps that kids use when they are just trying to veg.

Don't they always target every market the Nintendo way? This doesn't sound like something new and it's actually concerning.

yikes... that's not what I wanna hear as someone in the market for a console to go next to my PC

NEO looking like the likely candidate if NX is going back to casuals

This is what they needed to do.

I don't care what so called hardcore gamers say this is the market that Nintendo should cater to. Why try to please people who already have Xbox/PlayStation?

Don't they understand they caught lightning in a bottle with the Wii? They can't and will not be able to recreate that success. Especially considering that audience just wants to play mobile games now.

Wow this Ubisoft dudes comment really flipped the switch for some people. You would think Nintendo announced NX Music or something.

Ugh, doesn't inspire confidence that this the big graphical upgrade that I want.

Dammit Nintendo why can't you just match MS and Sony?

How many Wii U-sized flops is it going to take?

Dude how can they even match Sony and MS? Even if they were targeting PS4 with like a 2 TFLP console Scorpio and PS4K already blow that out of the water.

We need to let go of the pipe dream that NX will be Nintendo's return to the fray. After watching the Sony E3 conference, the depressing reality hit me that Nintendo just can't compete on that level. Their best bet at this point is to release a low priced system with a new gimmick and hope they can catch lightning in a bottle again.

That's quite a sweeping conclusion to draw from a single anecdote.

aaaaaaand there goes all my interest.

I just want to play Nintendo games on a decent hardware with a normal controller. Is that really too much to ask?

Unless NX has an incredibly awesome gameplay concept, Nintendo really doesn't get it, and not learned a damn thing.

And now Microsoft seems to be targeting the same Xbox One experience, only now in 4K with Scorpio.

I think I'll be fine with PS4 ----> PS4 Neo (+PSVR) ----> until PlayStation 5 arrives.

I really don't understand some of you guys. Why do we want 3 identical consoles? As a gamer, this is some of the best news that I've heard out of E3: Nintendo is possibly doing something different. I don't need a PC-lite console since I already have a PC. I actually really enjoyed the Wii waggle, something that I couldn't find anywhere else and which a lot of my non-gamer friends excitedly enjoyed with me, which is why the Wii was the only console that I ever owned.

If they are going back to motion controls, I for one look forward to what might be a more refined experience... but it remains to be seen as to what "gimmick" they'll be adopting this time around. There's also no guarantee that they'll pick a good "gimmick". The moment I tried out the Wii U and found myself awkwardly looking back and forth from the TV to the gamepad screen, I knew that it was a horrible idea that I had no interest in.

What does it mean for semi-core/core gamers?
If you mean those only care about graphics and story driven games, they should have stopped caring about Nintendo a long time ago. If you mean people who like good games, then maybe the NX might be for them still.
