Resident Evil 7 Biohazard announced (PC/XB1/PS4), Jan 2017, PS4 demo out now

If it hasn't been talked about yet, I want to ask about the engine. Why couldn't they use Panta Rhei? RE engine looks like RE 6. Unfortunately, I'm not so much impressed.

Because it seems to be built from the ground up for VR. For a VR game, it looks absolutely incredible, particularly PSVR.

If it wasn't a VR title it would obviously look far better on a regular TV.

It's a bold move by Capcom, got to hand it to them they are taking a risk, good on them.

I see. That is fair opinion.

Revelations 2 was a great game--I'm happy he's going to direct a big one. Makes me even more hopeful.

Thanks for the link, it was a nice read. Maybe it deserves its own thread since it clarifies some things people might have an issue with.

He's not the director for Rev 2 I believe. The one who did RE5 did REV2

(Which makes sense, given that RE5 and REV2 are both the best post-RE4 games)

Here are some things that I want to know about RE7:

1). If you play in VR, will the graphics be dumbed-down from the TV/console version? Will the PS4 version look lesser than other versions due to it being designed for VR?

2). Is the soundtrack being composed by the guy who composed the score to the "Resident Evil REmake"? If it's not, then they need to get him - that soundtrack was fucking amazing!!

3). Will there be firearms in this game and also zombies and boss creatures?

"The atmosphere of '70s, '80s, American horror movies – the lonely house out in the fields or in the middle of nowhere in the countryside where there’s nobody to call for help. I love that kind of atmosphere. That was a big influence on us choosing the Southern United States setting for the game. It feels so helpless and isolated."

He's not wrong!

I can't fathom some of the "complaints". RE7 has finally nailed the horror and atmosphere and the execution so far has been stunning. Inventory, melee, guns will all be in the final game.

But it didn't nail either of those. This demo is seriously lacking in both of those departments and it doesn't even have fun/interesting gameplay to back it up. This demo is highly disappointing and I really hope the full game is way better than this though I am not keeping my hopes up due to FP view.

No freaking way it doesn't. RE6 looked like absolute ass. The new engine isn't cutting edge based on the demo, but it's decent and seems to run well.

Weird how no one is mentioning the potential similarities in this, and Condemned: Criminal origins

1st person
Creepy,spooky vibes
Melee combat
Replace crazy bums with crazy zombies

Isn't this going to be the same, condemned was pretty cool
That game was well received

Yea its not 3rd person anymore, but look how the last two turned out, it left a bad mark

So here's hoping it turns out well

This GameSpot interview with Masachika Kawata here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFnGHCQsCNk

Toward the end they say that there is no staff on RE7 that worked on P.T., that the game was in development before P.T. was even announced, and that they were surprised Konami was doing something similar.

yeh but isn't the demo going to be quite different to the main game? There's definitely P.T. influence in the demo, if not the main game so much

Beginning Hour took about 15 minutes. That's not encouraging but I'm still very interested in the game.

You can get an ending in 15minutes sure but goddamn replaying this for multiple endings and soaking up every last bit - I've had hours in this and loving it

Although some of GAF in the play through thread aren't holding up mentally in relation to what the finger does...

I've been hoping for first person resident evil for years now...

Resident Evil was one of the first games I ever played on playstation, back when playstation was still brand new. I didn't even own the system myself and I didn't know anyone except my cousin (who was older but lived far away) who even owned a playstation (I remember my parents rented me the system once before I even owned it... fond memories...)... anyway... to the point of this post.

This game is bringing back all the fond memories of the resident evil franchise before it went pretty sour, which happened after Code Veronica imo with the whack attempt at first person shooting and while resident evil 4 was/is a good game it doesn't live up to the originals imo.

And somehow, this version lives up and exceeds my expectation of how much I would enjoy this game so many years after its first release. So yeah... all that preface to say one thing.

I will say one additional thing unrelated to the main point of this post. The next resident evil would do well to nail the RE art style in this game. And I would love to see a resident evil in the vein of alien isolation, first person and everything. I think they can do it right in first person next time around.

I do hope more survival horror games choose the first person view. I think resident evil would be incredible in first person view with proper controls similar to alien isolation. They tried some kind of wonky fps resident evils in the past, I know, but they did it wrong while isolation did it right.

I am loving this game.

I wish more survival horror games were made in first person. I'd kill for a first person Resident Evil inspired by this game. I know there were some first person REs made, but they're all crap and don't really execute nearly as well as even mediocre fps titles. But I could see RE working with this style of gameplay, especially the whole aim system and stealth aspects.

I don't own a ps4 but might bother someone I know who does to let me try the demo out, although frankly it seems like I should wait for the full game.

No no I swear to god, I hear a click if I look up, spin down the stairs, swing the axe seven times and see which way the finger is pointing.

Initially, I was skeptical about RE7 because I feared that the final game would lack things like combat and resource management, things that I believe are essential to any Resident Evil experience. Those fears have been to laid to rest now by Capcom, thankfully, but I'm still not convinced yet. My biggest problem with the game (at least as it's being presented now), is a complete change in tone, and a lack of classic RE charm and personality. Going back all the way to the very first game, the series has always been goofy and cheesy, as much as it's been tense, or scary. Lines like "Jill Sandwich" and "Master of Unlocking", or all the goofy costumes and weapons you could unlock... it was always as fun as it was scary, y'know?

RE7 though, so far, is pure, unadulterated horror. It's 100% serious, and it's intended to be terrifying all the time. Capcom seems to have brought back horror to the series, but the fun of the series has been left behind in it's wake, or so it seems so far. The tone of the game just doesn't feel like RE to me, and I do believe the tone of a game is very important. Is anyone else as disappointed with the drastic change in tone as I am?

I personally love the tone of the demo and if RE7 is going to be like this then great. The first game was goofy because of poor voice acting and writing I don't think it was meant to be intentionally so bad it's good. Granted they kind of ran with that going forward but my favourite aspect of RE has always been the horror elements. I understand there is a huge group of fans who don't enjoy that aspect as much but i think it's incredibly bold and refreshing to see Capcom try something new with the franchise when it would have been so easy to do another watered down RE4 REtread.

I believe it was 100% intentional. The writing was just as goofy as the voice acting. The costumes were always crazy, too. There's always been an underlying goofiness to the series, and it just makes me sad to see it gone.

Thank god it isn't another RE4 retread... RE used to be one of my favorite franchises til that formula. I am ready for a new RE experience.

Well we can agree to disagree, unless there is some quote out there where they state they made it intentionally bad.

No quotes that I know of, lol. Just the fact that somebody actually wrote the "Jill Sandwich" line, and that you can dress your character up in goofy costumes, you always blow up the final boss with a rocket launcher and escape a huge explosion, etc. Idk man, I'm not looking to argue with anyone, and if you like where they're going with this game, that's fine. I like that the game is more Horror focused, and I think it has great atmosphere so far. I also like the sense of exploration in the demo as well, as that's something the series has lacked for a very long time. I just always loved how the series balanced Horror with goofiness, and I think it's a shame that that's seemingly being lost. I'm not saying the game will be bad, just that it doesn't feel like RE to me without all that stuff, and that I probably won't enjoy it as much as the older games. That's all.

RE1 had bad writing and voice acting, I don't think it was intended to be comical... which is why it was funny at times. Looking at the action sequences, they are a bit over the top but I think the intent is intense action, that sometimes misses the mark.

I brought it up when I first posted my impressions. It struck me as Condemned minus combat, especially with that emphasis on mannequins. Problem for me is, Condemned came out 10+ years ago and Resident Evil is doing it now?

First person melee has barely improved since Condemned on top of it so I hope they can somehow make that work in their game unless they're going strictly shooting. I assumed melee due to the axe etc.

The demo option. It's totally bizarre to me to release a demo that supposedly isn't indicative of the final game they're trying to sell me with said demo.
I'm not sure you played the right demo. Beginning Hour is all about showcasing the tone the final product will have, and I think it does a great job at it. This isn't exactly new to the games industry, anyway. P.T was a demo to highlight what exactly Silent Hills could've been, had it been released. And, let's be honest, Ground Zeroes was a glorified demo to showcase and set up the story for Phantom Pain which, really, played different to GZ.

When I play a demo, my assumption is that this is indicative of the gameplay. When the demo is a walking simulator, I assume the game to be one.

But yes, I did play the wrong demo. I just double checked and it turned out I had downloaded Outlast instead, thanks for pointing it out.

Yeah I understand that replaying it to find more details could be fun and results in a lot more time played, but calling it Beginning Hour still seems like a pretty big stretch. Strictly speaking you cant be including replays in time estimates like that.

Since it's just a free teaser it's not a big deal but it's going to make me a little suspicious come release if they start throwing around campaign length numbers.

I love the new direction for the franchise. Have loved RE and each installment, but RE6 was a stark reminder at how far the series had been removed from its design intent - survival horror.

Taking a page from PT (which is still one of the most frightening game experiences ever) and building a full RE game is the right place for the series after 20 years. The demo and what it teases so far is creepy, intriguing, and immersive with or without VR.

Plus Capcom always has the Revelations series when they want to produce a traditional third-person action title.

I know it's sad to know that camera of the game will be in first person , but after I played the demo , I am sure the final version will be much better than RE 5 & RE 6

Maybe not comical, but it's definitely infused with a sense of levity and entertainment value, as is the rest of the series. And it was marketed as such from day one.

That just reminded me of what a big deal that live action open sequence was when it came out. It was considered outrageously violent and uncalled for haha...at least by German gaming magazines I was reading at the time.
