GAF thread!!

When one of our games gets a thread on GAF, it's like a little badge of honor. Thank you truly to those showing love for our work -- it really means a lot to our team! :)

I'm happy to answer any questions if you guys have 'em. We're very proud of this one. Not only do I feel we brought a lot of unique elements to the genre, but it's also packed with content and a pretty nice length to boot (we saw average playtimes at
10-12+ hours to complete story mode, and around 14-18+ hours for 100%)

And yes, George Takei is in this! That was quite the incredible experience. He was humble, awesome, hilarious, and as it turns out he really likes quesalupas. (He asked if we liked his Taco Bell commercial, and proudly proclaimed that Quesalupas are "sooo delightfuly cheeesssyy!" (be sure to read that in his voice))

Here's some quick gifs showing off the battle mode:

It's exciting to have nice developers in threads! If you don't mind, I have a few questions/comments:

First: I'm really liking the style (in models and animation) used for the game! Simple, but flashy (like the show)!

Secondly: I haven't read much of the dialogue, but what process did your team go through to keep the humor and snappiness of the source in tact?

Thirdly: This is my first time hearing of this! How long has it been worked on and what brought about the idea? Actually, I'm surprised an episode hasn't already been made around the Teen Titans battling with figurines of each other around the city versus friends/foes.

No... you don't. It's a game about collecting and battling with amiibo-like toys in-game. There are no physical ones.

And one has to wonder why, you know? You can make Amiibos work with any cellphone/tablet with an NFC reader via 3rd party application, it's funny no one has made a game for mobile that uses amiibo like figures as a mechanic.

Speaking of the show, how is Teen Titans Go! these days? Is it worth watching and why? Did the show just get better and people stopped complaining all the time?

And the game looks super polished and fun, reminds me of that premium Power Puff Girls mobile game that changed gameplay genre depending on device orientation.

I know Cartoon Network will mainly focus on mobile, but I'd like to see Grumpy Fish go further with their Steven Universe Paper Mario Clone on consoles. Or at least flesh out the mobile one some more. You can't justify charging more than a few bucks for a mobile game though, so that's the problem I have with the platform and how it can limit it's games.

I gave TTGo a chance, I'm pretty sure I saw most of the first season. I don't know, it really started to get to me how mean (and crappy) the characters were.

The best part about all the misguided vitriol TTGo gets is the fact that TTGo dedicates hilarious episodes to subtly and not so subtly shitting on the people who shit on it.

The idea for each game always starts with thinking about not only what would fit well with the show or IP (and it's important to us to always do an original story for our games -- we aren't interested in just recreating an existing episode), but also deciding what type of game/which genre we want to dabble in next... (pretty simple!) Coming off Attack the Light, which we really enjoyed making, we definitely still had RPGs on the brain and we wanted to keep elements of that genre intact in a some way.

IIRC, the Amiibo/Skylanders parody originated from the team having lots of those figures around our studio, and someone staring at them during a brainstorming session... haha. That led to the idea of collecting, which fits perfectly with the obsessive nature of Robin's character in TTG, and then of course we got really excited about bringing in elements that reminded us of collecting and hunting down toys as kids. We envisioned the "toy store simulator" and flinging things from the racks very early on. Also: viewing the 3D figures in the Titans Tower was decided on very early and inspired by the trophy room feature in Smash Bros (something I've always loved about those games)

When it comes to achieving the feel of any show, we try to fully immerse ourselves in whatever property we're currently working on, so LOTS of watching of the shows to get a feel for the writing and overall style. We're all huge cartoon geeks, so that helps as well. And then CN's talented writers will also perform some editing on our writing & story to help match things even closer to the IP.

Depending on the show, we sometimes also get access to the show teams to pick their brains about a show's DNA, or to even get them to critique our stuff. We didn't have a chance to work too much with the TTG show team on this one unfortunately (though they are awesome, talented peeps), though on a game like Attack the Light we had a bit more access to the creators.

Development on Teeny Titans began a little over a year ago, though the majority of dev time was actually parallel with our previous mobile game, Powerpuff Girls Flipped Out. Soooo, it's been a busy year for sure...

Thanks for the questions :)

The game is an awesome little time sink. A lot of references and some genuine laughs. I love Teen Titans Go!, too, so I'm sure that plays a role.

Thanks for the great answers! Bought the game and will hopefully be able to check it out in more depth later this weekend. My sister completed Attack the Light months ago (as she's a big Steven Universe fan) and enjoyed it. I'm sure she'll be interested in this as well.

Can I enjoy this thread if I didn't read the OP?

I might dip my toes into premium mobile gaming with this, I really appreciate TTG for what it tries to do with the resources it has

Is Kid Flash in this game? I'll buy it if he's in.

It looks really good, I'm buying it anyway, more great premium mobile experiences please.

To be fair, they are getting Lego Dimensions figures, which are close to amiibo.

This game does look surprisingly good though, especially for a licensed mobile game.

Pro-tip: Don't ignore classes! I did early on and it ended up stacking up damage before I realized I should have a more balanced team and not just all Strength heroes.

Kudos, MrCheez. This is a great example of iOS gaming done right.

Got it and enjoying it, it's just so...charming.

I mean, the show has its hate(I don't see the hate, personally, as the show is in itself a massive parody of itself and the fandom), but this game is so delightful. It's cheap, no IAP, no reason to not give it a go. Enjoy the fanservice.

My daughter is going to flip her lid when she wakes up-she's obsessed with TTG-and Lady Legasus is her favorite character!

Look. At. Dem. Legs. They're amazing!

I unfortunately JUST got it after seeing this episode several times. I'm appalled at this crass example of humor and certainly do LOOOONG for the days Teen Titans took itself SERIOUSLY!!

SERIOUSLY!

SERIOUS

IIRC that never actually happens in the episode though, right? It was two images placed in the same pic.

Yep yep.

Hot dog, this game is fun. Just beat the first tournament. Collecting and leveling is suitably addictive.

Yeah, I've just finished the second tournament and am down to continue this morning. I'm trying to find a really good Tech person to start training up at the moment, as I've also found myself holed into using mostly Strength. I don't want it to bite me later on! lol

I love how the ATB battle system works. All three characters share the same bar, and using an ability only removes that amount of energy from the bar. So you can pull off a lower-cost attack with one party member, which then leaves enough energy to use another member's attack/ability.

I was lukewarm on TTG at first but now find it's pretty damn great.

No way my geriatric note 2 is going to be able to play this, and looking at that video it's probably better on tablet anyway.

This looks amazing and like it would be a great paid game to juggle between with the F2P game I play. Gonna buy it.

Level 5's Snack World's basically going to be that with charms instead of figures, isn't it? Though I think the major obstacle's always been that iPhones don't have NFC that developers can really make use of.

Sooo Trigon is kind of amazing. He can get a crazy amount of health and his punch (quite early on the ATB Bar) attack takes off a HUGE chunk of damage once you allocate points into Strength.

I even tossed the Grumpy Chip on him, which sacrifices half of his hit points for 50% more Attack. Thing is, since my Base attack was so high I didn't get to nearly 50% before cap BUT it added an extra 3 Attack points or so. I was surprised at how much of a difference it made.

The boy now hits 16 on his normal punch, which again, happens very quickly. With a Lucky Hit that goes to about 24-26 damage. I'm sure you can optimize it even more if you put less into his Base attack and keep up his base HP (which would allow for more points into Luck or Dodge). NUTS. I love it.

Sharing my Lady Legasus strategy:

She's an interesting one. Her earliest move is the Heroic Strength Boost and her final is her awesomely infamous special Multi-Hit. The special, when maxed through Silkie, becomes Undodgeable; every kick will hit.

Giving her lots of Luck benefits this attack as every kick has its own chance of hitting a critical. The more she has, the more you can potentially get out of the move. I capitalize on her Dodge over her HP because I find it key that she doesn't take hits at all while waiting for the bar to reach to her special or while stacking the Heroic Boost (the latter is preferable without having to switch characters).

I start the match with the "Dancing" Microchip. This has her gauge immediately go into overdrive at the start of the match. When it reaches near her special, I spam the Heroic Strength Boost (it's not called that, but I forget at the moment) each time it gets near the special gauge and repeat. This increases the strength of her move drastically. Wait for the attack's damage to reach near or over the opponent's HP Points and unleash.

If the enemy has "Nuh-Uh" which can negate all buffs. Just use her base kick. It's likely you can still get one or two boosts in. This is why it's good to not ignore her Base Attack as you will be stuck with a constant debuffer at times.

I've gotten her to Max Level 20 now and she's great (making HP 30+ enemies fall with little time spared). Alas, mine is a glass cannon. I sacrificed chances to raise her HP since, for my strat, too many other stats need her attention to capitalize. She's really good though, as long as I gague the base strength of my opponent and make sure they dont' have "Nuh-Uh!"
