Ya know, game doesn't come out until Holiday 2017 and I'm not even sure they'll be out by that date judging from how long KS games usually take to make. I'm sure some of you guys have better PCs by then unless you never upgrade.

Is there going to be a UI mode that replicates the original's "hey what if we programmed a whole OS in here?" crazy UI?

I'm disappointed that the remake doesn't seem to have separate UI icons for your posture, directions your head is facing, and direction your eyes are facing.

Icons seem a bit vague, why not a three dimensional vector for head direction, eye-direction (if they are gonna do VR they will need those anyway), and height value to show exactly how much you are crouching?

This is going to be an interesting campaign to watch leg wise.

Here are some of the previous big campaigns broken down (Haven't updated this since last year...but nothing big has come out so it still works)
So on average they make ~42% of their total funding in the first 3 days. So we'll see what their projected funding is in a couple of days.

I'll be following the kickstarter here, needs a few days to normalize.

I think demo exposure from let's plays and word of mouth might give this Kickstarter some legs. I can see it hitting its final goal and maybe even a couple stretch goals, but it won't reach them in any recordbreaking times.

I would love to see this one succeed. Do it for the human stretch goal known as Chris Avellon!

Backed. Will play the demo later today.

EDIT: Oh god, what's with the salt? Was there ever even a System Shock for consoles before this that so many people are outraged?

Neither System Shock 1 or 2 were ever released on home console. It was always exclusive to PC. System Shock 2 did come close to a console release with a proposed port to the Dreamcast, but that never happened.

Played the demo and it was fantastic.Reminds me to bioshock.Day 1 purchase for sure.

I have a question about the ks and the 150$ tier, that option gives you a copy of the game in the xbox one?Because i don't see it.

Remember that this is pre-alpha... a lot is going to change until the game actually release. Not saying you'll get what you want, but you know...

I expect ~45% in the first three days for this one, with behaviour close to Divinity 2.

I'm confused, 45% each day? Because we're at 42% funded and it hasn't even been 24 hours.

Oh, 45% of what they ever earn on day 1...

Maybe they'll be able to get PS4 dev kits lined up, that would really lower that percentage.

Did you even read it? They are getting support from microsoft.

Was it confirmed? So I was right in my assumption?

It's as if there's intelligent life outside the high walls that may have knowledge of it being a masterpiece. But how could they? Must investigate.

it wont lower anything because even if they get devkits today theyll finish pc and xbone first hence the "open to other plaforms in the future"

If anyone is willing to help me get the physical CE $150 tier please PM me.

Never used Kickstarter and I have PayPal only.

I believe we're in the process of setting up Paypal so that you'll be able to use it to pledge. It's a special case apparently

Pledged at the $75 tier.

Part of me is annoyed that I did, because I've told myself again and again (after failure upon failure for Unity to be a good engine for FPS) I wouldn't support devs who choose Unity over UE4 for FPS games, but... it's fucking System Shock man. And moreover, what I saw in the demo (other than the hitching, fps drops, etc), I loved. The animation work was great at such an early phase, the music was fitting, the visuals were on-point (no pun intended for the unfiltered textures which I love), and the UI was great.

Hope they nail it with this one. GL to your programmers for dealing with Unity :)

Have you ever played The Long Dark? It uses Unity and its brilliant.

I just noticed this from the stretch goal:

$1.7m Goal : Enemy limb dismemberment, More puzzles, Ammo types/weapon settings, Vending machines, Basic components/research, RPG progression, Weapon upgrading, Hardcore mode (No respawning), Ironman mode (Only 1 savegame. If you die, the save is deleted)

No respawning? does this mean the default behaviour will be some kind of respawning a la Bioshock Vita chambers? Is that how OG System Shock handled player death?

There is a regeneration chamber on each floor, when you die you will respawn there. If you die before you reach the chamber for that floor, then you're dead for good.

I was not implying console gamers can't know that the game is great (or played it, I assumo many console gamers also play or have played on PC at some point in their life.) The series has also gained a lot of prestige with the success of Bioshock.
That said, the outrage in the first page had me quite baffled. Being outraged about it not appearing on the PS4 seemed confusing to me. It's not that I don't understand wanting the game on your available or preferred hardware, but the outrage was as if the PS4 version was not just expected, but obvious to them. I was pleasantly surprised the game is headed to consoles at all considering the original's UI and gameplay.

That's interesting. Does respawinig reset anything in the gameworld (enemies health for example) or does it work like Bioshock Vitachambers (i.e. you can brute force enemy encounters) ? Never got System Shock to run well on my w95 pc :p

Enemies randomly spawn in System Shock, so you can't brute force it that way.

I have. I seem to remember similar issues with it, but I heard it has since been updated so maybe they don't exist anymore.

It's not impossible to do it with Unity. It just seems that it's very, very tricky to do, and most developers opt out of that difficulty, but opt-in to an engine that will pose that difficulty for them simply because Unity is, on its face, an extremely fast tool to iterate with (I've programmed with it for many of my small projects, mostly games, and it *is* super easy to get going with). The problem it seems stems from the things Unity won't let you do, or you have to get in touch with Unity to do (particular optimizations), which as the Firewatch devs will tell you is a slow and difficult journey. At the risk of exposing my own ignorance (my own testing is not sufficient), most of the issues stem from culling and the lack of manual memory management that can only be countered with 'tricks' like aggressive caching and stack-only/pool object usage. I imagine the hitching in these games come from that just leaving it all up the GC when it kicks in, but again I'm not entirely sure.

The point is, UE4, or similar FPS-centric engines, have solved these problems, or at least expose more professional level programming languages to deal with the key issues. AFAIK, UE4 lets you write plain old C++, and the Blueprint stuff generates C++ too. I thought UE at this point is a reasonable alternative pricing wise to Unity, but I don't really know.

I sincerely hope the team is up to the challenge, because it's their first go at developing their own title, and Unity can pose problems (a lot of the stuff you need is going to be third party for FPS I guess, which introduces another layer of communication/support difficulties). System Shock is also a beloved property, so people are going to be fierce if it doesn't meet a certain standard.

I just don't want it to wind up being yet another post-release quick-and-dirty performance patch, or something, where ultimately the game is out long enough that people just "deal" with it. Make me a believer!

Development on System Shock Remaster likely began before a game even shipped on UE4, which likely played into the decision. By that same vein, the small team were more likely to have Unity experience than UE4.

Awesome.

Not backing though. Between a bunch of failed devs and liers on some backed projects some good ones will take the tool.

Will keep an eye on it though. A ps4 version would.... be great.

Indeed it is but doesnt mean anything if you have experience with Kickstarter projects.

Night Dive made OxenFree. That game kicks ass.

Actually I may be wrong. I don't see it in their Wiki page.

OxenFree still kicks ass though! I stand by that half of my statement.

While we're at it can I get Bloodbourne and Demon Souls on PC? I don't want a console but I want those games.

Some of the replies in this thread are baffling. I am very happy one of the coolest franchises is updating a very intriguing game, got nothing but love for all involved! Night Dive has been super ace with their work so far, will continue to support their efforts.

Is Linux only a stretch goal? I'll have to wait until a few days then to see if I back this if that's the case.

Eh, I went ahead and pledged anyway. Can't say no to SS and if I have to switch to Windows to play it, so be it.

The campaign will likely reach 50% funding in the first 24 hours, the Linux port is in the first stretch tier.

It will be very likely we are going to be playing on Linux.
