The best horror game of all time is...

Silent Hill 2.

No surprise considering my avatar but still...
I own (or have owned) pretty much all consoles. I rebought a PS2 and I'm currently playing PS1 and PS2 games like Dino Crisis or Haunting Ground.
Where are those games today? There's nothing like it. Survival horror is pretty much dead.
Anyways, those games are fantastic but Silent Hill 2 is still the best horror game ever made, imo.
It still has great graphics (I'm playing the PS2 version on my HDTV), the story is phenomenal, the pacing is perfect, the sound (and soundtrack) is unmatched and the atmosphere...oh boy....the atmosphere.

I miss Team Silent.

What's your favorite horror game? And why?

Rdr undead nightmare

Fallout 3 in certain parts like metro stations

What makes it is that it's not forced horror world, you have to venture out and the gradient goes from safe areas to holy shit this place scurry

I am playing FEAR recently and I love it. Personally I don't get scared from 3rd person games, I think first person horror games are way more effective because you feel like you are there and because of the limited visibility, so yeah I will go with FEAR.

boo title. that's a bad title

my favourite horror game is probably the first resident evil. yeah, it's not the scariest game, but it's got an amazing atmosphere and some fun ass puzzles. maybe oxenfree, too.

Silent Hill 2 would be my pick as well, although more because I think it's the BEST game labeled "horror".

If we were just talking pure "frightening" factor, it'd probably be something like Outlast, Amnesia, Alien Isolation, etc...

Resident Evil Code: Veronica.

In my opinion, this was the perfect blend of horror, classic RE cheesiness, and difficulty. The characters were enjoyable, and the music really added to the atmosphere as a whole.

Oh....and these bastards...

Silent Hill 2 and Alien Isolation.

PT, Soma and Amnesia not far behind.
I'm not really a fan of those first person defenceless horrors. I don't know why but they're just not as engaging to me. They're scary, but I don't find myself enjoying it.

I haven't played many horror games, but Silent Hill 2 I did play and it was pretty great. Remember playing it at night while there was actual fog outside my windows. Scary stuff.

Currently it's still being held by REmake. Ammo isn't as loose in the game as in the original titles or the newer ones. The atmosphere of the mansion, coupled with the location and enemy designs, elevated the horror aspects greatly. Then there were the Crimson Heads...

RE7 has some big shoes to step in if it's going to tackle the horror aspect of the series.

Hopefully I'll play Silent Hill 2 soon and see what the fuss has been about after all these years. Just need to grab a memory card and I should be set.

REmake would be my runner up. Not only for being a great remake but for creating probably the most iconic survival horror atmosphere and setting there is. It's just fantastic in so many ways and it hasn't really been replicated since.

....yet!

The new resident evil is suppose to go back to its roots....ah who am I kidding. We all know its not.

I agree, I like silent hill 2 as well.

If not Silent Hill 2 (which is my answer—I mean come on), for me it's a toss up between implicit horror titles Spec Ops: The Line & Hotline Miami, followed by the explicit horror of Dead Space 2, FEAR, Metro: Last Light, and RE: Nemesis.
I miss Team Silent.
Also, iirc Team Silent isn't really a thing. As in there wasn't really a consistent roster you can credit.

Bloodborne might just be my #1. The lore in that game is so fucking crazy in so many ways. Eldritch horrors, horrific experiments and abominations, locations that get more and more surreal as you decend into the madness.

There are so many layers, there is so much happening behind the veil, only to be revealed once you start looking for it. I still can't fully grasp it all, or how anyone even comes up with stuff like this.

Fuck Japanese ghosts. Some frightning backstory to the ghosts themselves and some great scary, atmospheric moments overall.

Agreed on SH2. Pretty much the only horror game that has gotten into my head to the point that I had to walk away from it for a bit.

I have a question for those that have finished it, about the Hotel.

There's a point when you're in the hotel toward the end, where James and Mary spent their honeymoon or whatever. You reach a staircase or hallway that's blocked off by a metal gate.

The first time I ever got to that point, I swear to god I heard Mary calling for James from somewhere in the hotel. It was very faint, but it was there. It scared the living hell out of me.
.

I've played through at least a half dozen times since then, and that's never happened again. Does anyone else remember this part or did the game REALLY get into my head?

Eh silent hill doesn't really play well, plus running up to doors to find 99% of them were locked got old fast - a good horror game sure, but I think I personally would rank Dead Space 2, Metro 2033 and Alien Isolation above. Horror is a genre that's only gotten better as time goes on and technology advances (visual and sound design improves)

Yes, it's true. I've played it multiple times and you can hear her calling your name

Dead Space and The Evil Within

Had unbelievable amounts of fun with both despite not really liking horror games (or movies for that matter).

Two years ago I was showing SH2 to my friend who had never seen it, and I hadn't played it myself since around when the Xbox port hit.

I was running around town right at the start and I had just started to say "This game is great but it's been a decade so it probably isn't that scary anymo-" right before I finished the last syllable one of those little spider fuckers DARTED from under a car across the street and I squealed like a fucking pig, he's given me shit for it ever since :p

I'd absolutely agree though, if it's not THE best it's right beside it.

I really can't agree with this. I'm scared by games which are 15-20 years old. They don't have great visuals anymore but they are damn scary. It's the atmosphere, the story and the soundtrack.
If you can find modern games like Silent Hill (1-3), Resident Evil (1-3), Dino Crisis, Haunting Ground etc etc...please tell me (no indie games like Lone Survivor)

The genre is dead. There's nothing like it anymore.

It's there, friend. Absolutely.

It took me until my 3rd playthrough of the game for me to discover it, long after I was cocky enough to think "I know everything about this game" and it made me jump out in absolute terror.

The game is sheer genius. It's my favorite work of art and the fact it was created by human hands is... it empowers me, man

I've heard a lot of good things about SH2 and really need to play it one of these days. But for me rn the best horror game is REmake. Dat atmosphere, building up tension and horror without having to apply to cheap jumpscare tactics (minus the dogs).
