Regardless of the relationship that Crystal Dynamics may or may not have with Microsoft, it was still up to Square Enix to make the final decision.

Shame that all of this bullshit takes away from what's most important - ROTTR is an excellent game and should be played.

This is a fantastic game and I am excited to see other Playstation user's impressions soon. Uncharted and Tomb Raider competition (and The Last of Us for that matter), are refining this into an incredible genre in my opinion.

I love how The Last of Us' Molotovs have made it into Rise of the Tomb Raider, Uncharted's third person camera has made it into Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider's axe has made it into Uncharted 4 (disguised as the piton), Tomb Raider's bow/arrows has made it into The Last of Us, etc...

I like this game so much that I would actually pay €70 for it. But I understand that not many is going to pay this much for a one year old game. Hopefully this is a misprint.

How did TRs bow make it into The Last of Us? They function completely differently and the two titles came out next to each other.

Not to mention both games came out around the same time. It's odd that we see people talk more about "Tomb Raider-esque" game design when games like Uncharted 4 or God of War are being shown rather than, you know, their first party cousin The Last of Us. There are a few resemblances here and there, but people make it sound like its a complete copy on the internet.

I will say the only thing that resembled Tomb Raider in Uncharted 4 was how it was much more open, even more so than Tomb Raider. It didn't have the backtracking or RPG elements however. The piton was only there for maybe an hour at most and you hardly ever require the need to use it overtime, due to multiple paths, but that's about it.

Feels as though Tomb Raider gets more attention for its game design than it should at times. It's not a knock at it, but I guess I notice it more as I definitely did not enjoy the game as most people did.

Best wishes.

TLOU came out like 2 months after TR2013...they get no credit for that. And it actually took some skill to use the bow efficiently in TLOU.

Never understood why people think the TR bow is actually good, seems to be one of the worst implementations of a bow in gaming. It doesnt work like a bow at all, more like a gun...

Wouldnt be that hard to add some physics behind it to at least make it something thats very useful but requires skill to use

...How? You press and hold the trigger to pull the string, then release to shoot. It couldn't be more different than a gun. In some other games, you fire arrows by simply pressing the trigger. That would be more like a gun.

Caught your edit - yeah sorry I meant more the flight of the arrow and the fact that distance nor windage has pretty much no impact in the game. For all intents and purposes other than the trigger mechanism you mentioned its much closer to a gun than a bow...

Because it's better than any of the guns. Its not a very good bow, but it's overpowered as hell and extremely easy to use.

Probably because it doesn't have arrow drop, but I don't mind. It feels great to use.

Got you, so its an OP weapon and not because its de facto a bow - so going back to my original point, its a lazy implementation of a bow.

Hmm, I just recall the fact that TR2013 and Hitman Absolution were considered failures (and Sleeping Dogs). Probably SE's decision to accept the exclusivity deal and Hitman's sequel being episodic.

I liked TR2013 and Hitman Absolution.

Except for the part where this deal wasn't made going into the gen, but quite far into it (between E3 '14 and Gamescom '14).
Was just about to post exactly this.

Preorders for the PS4 version went up once the game was shown off during E3 2014. And there was hard data showing how much better the ps4 was doing than the xbox one at that time.

We don't know when the deal was made, we know when it was announced. And again, if you think that Crystal has more say over which platform it released on than Square Enix does then I don't know what to say.

If the deal was made before E3 2014, it would've been announced then. Retailers would not have been given the info for the PS4 version of the game (with a holiday 2015 placeholder release date) if the deal was already set or in the works before E3 2014, and I never said anything about Crystal having say over which platform it released on. And I don't see bombshell saying any such thing either (unless I missed a post ).

MS would've shouted at the top of their lungs that it was an exclusive at E3 2014 if the deal was already set. All things point to the deal being made after E3.

They were likely talking about it before E3 2014 - it was revealed on the Xbox stage at E3 after all, and Microsoft played the trailer during the airing of Miss Teen USA shortly after E3. Also, retailers frequently put up place holders pre orders for games that haven't been confirmed for any platform (FF Versus XIII pre orders, The Last Guardian pre orders, etc), or have even been confirmed exclusive to other platforms, such as Amazon France's Bloodborne and Driveclub for PC.

I disagree, they were likely finalising negotiations but there is no way they only started talking about it after E3 2014.

Still have this preordered. $60 for the base game would be a bit much considering the game has been out for like a year. Here's hoping all the DLC is included.

There could have been talks before e3 for sure, but the deal absolutely was not made before E3 2014, which still indicates that Square had plenty of data & projections to look at before making such a deal. It was nowhere close to a "they really didn't see the ps4's success coming" type deal that EA made with MS before the consoles launched (and before the xbox one was even announced).

VSXIII and TLG had confirmed platforms by the developers/publishers. Development just did not go well.

It'd be one thing if it was one singular retail outlet putting up preorders. But over here it was 4 different retailers (best buy, amazon, futureshop, ebgames) that offered the ps4 version with a late 2015 release up for preorder a few days after the game was announced.

It doesn't matter when they started the negotiations, it matters when the deal was signed, and the deal was signed after E3 2014. This is very different than EA deals.

I'll pick this up at some point, but honestly I wouldn't have bought at launch anyway regardless of the price since I'm clearing my plate for Battlefield. By the time I'm ready for this, it'll have have come down to a sane price point or maybe hit PS+ like the first one did.

Ok, not the greatest comparing to TLOU, forgot about the DLC. Still, that game came out a good while after the original...Still sold well though, how much was down to lack of quality titles at that point or people simply hadn't played before (ex 360 owners). Anyway, I think sales wise it might do...OK...but yes, a Q4 release has the potential to be ..disastrous...I'm in however...

October is the worst time to release this year old shit. Gonna bomb and be $40 or less in November.

Most customers would celebrate a game dropping in price that quickly, but as a fan of the series, I'm pretty upset at how Square Enix just slammed the brakes on the forward momentum the reboot gave the franchise. It's almost impressive.

I still hope it does well, but I'm not optimistic, not at that price and not at that release date.

I'm probably alone on this but I'm really not a fan of the reboot, it was a fun idea but it doesn't compare to the old games in PS1, those were just perfect. Nowadays it's like it's trying to copy other games do at least in my opinion it has lost its soul. oh well :p

And about the timing if true, well Microsoft probably already paid Square the difference that they lost for not releasing on the PS4 simultaneously so this October release doesn't surprise me. They just put it on the PS4 to get any extra money they can but they basically are not counting on it.

The worst part is that they knew about the sales split between PS and Xbox.
As for the game, i'll get it later in the year. There is just too much games on PS4 and so little time to play theme all! :D

The bow/arrow hunting trailer was released way before The Last of Us came out, and their was only a small section of the game where Ellie hunts and that weapon's used. I think both studios borrow ideas obviously, who cares who did it first. Clearly this genre is evolving through competition.

Joel uses the bow in the main game as well though.

The bow is actually in TLOU a LOT. Did you even play the game?

There's no way you actually think TLOU added the bow based on a Tomb Raider trailer?? You can't be serious.

Especially considering the bow in TLoU is written into the narrative. It's not some weapon that was tacked on in response to Tomb Raider lol.

They clearly hadn't signed the deal then because the E3 2014 trailer still had a PS4 logo in it when it was first released.

Every trailer I see for it revealed is the Microsoft Press Conference trailer in 2014. It wasn't announced as timed exclusive yet, but I don't see anything for PS4
