All that attention towards Sonic Mania urges me to play a game of my Sonic CD JAP import. :D

It's so nice to see classic Sonic back, I trust Taxman.

it sounds closer to Sonic 1/2 to me. As long as its not CD, I hate the jump sound in that game, and I hated that used it for Classic Sonic in Generations. Yeah, I'm that anal about it.
BWAHP

I can't really relate to the excitement for the classic levels. If anything my only worry about the game is that they're gonna be half of the zones in it and I'll end up wanting more from a sequel that, knowing Sega, will never come.

But oh well, maybe it'll be worth it for the arrangements. Do we know if there was new music in GHZ or was it just the same as in Sonic 1?
You and me both, friend. The more original content, the better.

For folks who are curious what this game looks like at "native resolution", which appears to be 424x240, I used some screenshots that were released to approximate it.

Any chance of a new Tornado's stage or even a cutscene?

As much as I love how cool Sky Chase Zone was... They need to stop trying to recreate it. It was great for its novelty but it's terrible for gameplay. Every single attempt to make another Sky Chase Zone has been awful.

Sonic 4 and Sonic Lost World even used the superior Genesis Tornado. Sonic 4's version has sections where you get off the Tornado for a while and you have to fight Metal Sonic with it, but all that stuff just made the level longer and more tedious. It's just not a concept that can carry a whole level.

If they do something like it they should have it take up the first 1 minute of a level max and then Sonic gets off the Tornado and it becomes a traditional level. Or bring it back as a special stage like Lost World for chaos emeralds.

Or it's a suggestion that the special stages themselves will use polygons/wireframes.

Do we know exactly how the Retro Engine works? It's possible everything is actually polygons, most of them flat, with sprites as textures.

Horns aren't corny! You're just weird about horns. :p I remember you telling me to lay off the saxophone on some of my other songs

I remember thinking the horns in Casinopolis Zone sounded corny back when I first played SA. That and the other brass-heavy songs in the Adventure series eventually grew on me, but I still think that sound is less suited for the classic series than the modern games.

I remember Yuji Naka once describing the music of the Genesis games as being more techno-influenced and SA more rock-influenced. I don't know about all that, but I do think there are only a handful of classic Sonic songs suited for trumpet or saxophone, mostly Nakamura tracks (Sweet Dreams being an obvious example).

I do love them in cases like Casinopolis! In general, actually, they're cool.
What I'm more frigid about are particular 80's/90's pop vibe being used today, and thinking about it now, I may have mixed up the brass instrument in question with similar sounding synthesis.
But I think that kind of vibe was popular in 90's anime and Sonic CD JP certainly carried elements of it in certain stages.
(Sidenote: 0:24 onwards has that particular instrument that irks me ;p)

Hey GAF!

Been waiting so long to finally show you guys this game. Reading all the posts here has been amazing - thank you so much for the support. Seriously. :)

We've been planning this for some time, and the entire team behind the project are all extremely talented. As we go forward, we plan to tour the game around even more so that more people can get some time to play it and really experience how good it is. (Up next is Summer of Sonic in the UK.)

So excited to show you guys what comes next for this one!

I definitely appreciate that you guys want to keep the demo exclusive to events to help promote said events, but once the big events are out of the way it'd be really nice if the demo saw a public release.

And I'm also excited to see more of the game!

Last year, your tweets in the official account made me buy a (used) copy of Sonic 2006, they were just that good. Looking forward to your posts about this new game, even though I'll probably get it day one already. Can't wait to see more about it.

Keep up the good work!

The SoS twitter account said there were still tickets available as of yesterday. Maybe it sold out...? But I assumed there were still spots left.

Thank you so much for the two big announcements; Sonic Mania & Sonic '17. Both brought such positive vibes to the franchise and I can't wait to hear more about them! Sonic Mania is a dream come true for fans of the Classic series and its amazing that SEGA is finally letting the community work with Sonic Team to make an brand new Sonic experience.

Sonic is in a good spot now thanks to a number of factors, and its all thanks to you, the developers working on these great projects and SEGA for understanding what people want out of the series.

Its an amazing time to be a fan of the Sonic franchise and thank you for being a part of that.

I dunno if it was you who made this possible, but if it was... thank you. It looks fantastic.

hi mr twitter mememan

I have one question. How much input does Sonic Team have in this? I am probably in the minority but part of why I buy Sonic games is because Sonic Team makes or at least directs them. However, from what I can find online, this is purely done by indie developers without anyone from Sonic Team helping? I would have thought that it would be a collaboration between both instead, at least to some degree.

But that is only a minor issue. The game looks fantastic and made me remember my love for the classic Sonic games. It seems to bring back literally everything that everyone loved from Sonic CD and 3&K, while standing on its own as an original title, which couldn't get any better. This is amazing.

Izuka and one of the art directors from Sonic CD & Knuckles Chaotix is on board & overseeing production on the game. They are even helping Taxman & Company with the original zones appearing in Mania!

Okay, that's great, thanks! I was worried it would be a case of Sega basically turning a fangame into an official release (like Capcom did with Street Fighter X Mega Man) but if people from Sonic Team are helping with things beside production, this is great news to my ears.

You're a good egg, Ruby. I'm sorry the stream/event didn't go as seamlessly as you would have liked to, but I hope the excitement has made it all worth it. :)

I'm excited for Project 2017 too! Can't wait to hear more.

Saw this being discussed on Sonic Retro, but does anyone think the teal represents something? If I remember the classics correctly, they liked to use colours to reference playable characters and whatnot.

It's probably nothing, but it's fun to speculate.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
When is Spring 2017?

Also will this be on retail or digital only?

Normally you could maybe dismiss it, but there are pretty clearly colors there for Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. The teal could be a thing to discuss, actually.

Not to sure if you're able to answer this, but is there a reason why this is skipping Wii U/3DS? My assumption is that they haven't ported the Retro Engine on either consoles.

Definitely excited to be able to play this next year!
