Persona 5 "Summons" Gameplay Video

Seriously. I was wowed when we got our first glimpse...but man, it's beyond busy and borders on being unreadable.

TMS' is significantly clearer and just easy on the eyes.

I'll admit I haven't played it, but what I recall seeing of TMS seemed stupidly busy to me.

I think people just think it looks busy because they quick cutted through all the menus, so it there was no time to process it with all of the flashy transitions going at breakneck pace. In practice and actual gameplay, when your scrolling through, its not going to be an issue.

I like how that black menu that comes up when selecting a skill seems to completely cover up the summoning animations :lol

Here are the main two menus you see in this trailer. I'm honestly not sure what's unreadable about either. The video goes through the menus extremely quickly, but it seems pretty clear what everything does and there's very little clutter.

I don't think the summoning animations are supposed to be very important; if anything they're pretty deliberately de-emphasizing them compared to P3/P4 where you had to watch them for every single damn skill.

I honestly think people will find it the opposite - it only looks overwhelming at first, but it's both quicker and easier to actually use than, say, P4's UI, and by 10-20 hours you won't even notice how flashy it is anymore.

There's actually not all that much stuff on screen, and in some ways the UI is actually less intrusive than P4G's, it's just more animated.
Yeah, credit where it's due. P5 looks like it's much more faster paced then the others. The fast baton pass, the simple four button layout, quick selecting spells/personas for MC. Animations move quick and I feel like seasoned JRPG players will be planning and executing moves much faster than other games.

It think it just too fancy that it created some UI inconsistencies. Not exactly bad but probably need time to get used to it

someone explain how that bike is related to theivery again

Each character embodies a rogue archetype, but I don't think all of them are necessarily thief related. Makoto seems like a vigilante to me, which is much more fitting for her Persona than thief.

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't reveal Goro's thief outfit or show him in the party before launch. He starts as an antagonist, so they probably want to keep the details of him being a party member secret.

We know what element he'll be, based on process of elimination. As for his persona, I'm guessing "Herlock Sholmes".

Whats this baton pass business?

Its a new addition to the "One More!" mechanic.

Basically when you crit/hit with an element/ability the enemy is weak to, you can do "One More!" like usual or baton touch it off to an ally. You can choose who to pass it to, as well.

So, for example, say you're facing two enemies. The MC has a Persona that has an ability that one is weak to, but you yourself lack an ability the other is weak to. You knock down enemy #1 and baton touch to, say, Yusuke, who does have an ability it is weak to.

It also buffs the next character's healing/damage.

TMS has a great UI except in battles where it's pretty fucked up when you first start playing. Like, your eyes just don't know where to focus.

This seems kind of busy but if people can get used to the TMS battle UI P5 won't be an issue either.

each character only get 1 summon through the entire game?

The main character can switch Personas at will, and collect more, and fuse old ones to form more powerful new ones. Party members only have one Persona at a time. However, in P3/P4, party members' Personas changed into more powerful ones at a critical point in the character's story arc, which is likely the case here as well.

ah ok
that sounds better :)

The companions will likely get upgrades, but otherwise 1 is all they normally get. Only the MC's in the series can switch between multiple.

Can't understand people who think the UI is too busy, fast or flashy. Thought my eyes were toast after 30 years of staring at computer screens, you guys might need to go get yours checked. The UI looks slick, everything is mapped, the transitions are sweet. Can't wait for the game.

What inconsistencies do you mean?

Anyways, this is cut very fast with barely no time to read anything. When you play it in your own pace it will be no problem, especially when all the Japanese text is removed.

Cant wait to play but my god is the UI way too big and obnoxious.

What parts of it are too big? And why would it be better if it was smaller?

Once the skill is selected the UI only consists of the 4 HP/SP bars, so there is barely anything on the screen. Otherwise woukd you like to shrink the skill list? Then it would be harder to read and as of now you can easily see what element a skill belongs to and whether it's magical or physical just with a glance.

The button prompts will look better in the English version anyway, as they can just keep the English text, but will remove the Japanese one.

The entire thing. The whole thing needs to look like it's scaled for 1080p or something, this looks like 480p.

To be honest I feel both TMS and Persona 5 look way too busy for their own good.

I love the style of both of them but at the same time they both feel a little disorienting. But since you can adapt to TMS to the extent where you actually sorta get what the hell is going on I think Persona 5 will be playable on that regard too.

Nice dismissive remark there stating that people who don't share your opinion obviously should get their eyes checked.

Opinions, how do they work?

The whole presentation looks a bit too busy for my taste but it's still pretty cool.

I'm more concerned about the fact that the cat seems to comment after every move you make, it's already annoying in the trailer and it would be much worse in a 40+ hours game. I hope its just for the trailer

What entire thing? There is no entire thing as it changes depending on what option you choose. Also you don't want the text font to be too small when you want to read it while sitting some meters away from the screen. How are you going to read the skill list if it was 5 times smaller as you suggest?

Btw. this is a turn based RPG, not an action game. There is nothing hectic or flashy, you just navigate through menus. And in the clip you can see how fast and efficient you can be once you know what you're doing.

It will be the same as in P3/P4 with the navigators which wasn't annoying over time.

I can't express enough how weird and good it feels to see demons back as enemies in a Persona game lol

even better, demon negotiation is back as well :D

Atlus laying down the foundation for future console SMT games believe!!

To me it's just the opposite, lol.

TMS tried to do a lot of stuff like Persona, but just worse.

Whether it's worse or not is up to the individual, but I would disagree with you on that point. The whole integration of gameplay/art/music during combat flows together in a stylish and entertaining way few games really ever accomplish. I speak of TMS#FE of course, but Persona 5 looks like it will handily up the ante even more.

I really like all the HD RPG work ATLUS has been working on. You can really tell they go the extra mile when it comes to tying together all the elements into a really phenomenal presentation.

I seriously hope they change the battle menu font bc it's basically unreadable :/

They will remove the Japanese text, that's for sure. Otherwise I don't see how the English font is not readable.

Yeah, it's really hard to see what's going on. Maybe I'll feel differently after I've spent a few hours with the game.
Again, in this clip they select all the options really fast. For the player it's no problem, but for the inexperienced observer it's too fast. When you play it yourself you can of course take your time. But it's nice that once you have grown used to the menu flow you can navigate through it really fast and efficient.

I didn't see anybody complaining about previous Persona UI.

It was less flashy, but actually SLOWER. for example, you couldn't just press one button for an action, you had to rotate stupid unintuitive wheel.

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't reveal Goro's thief outfit or show him in the party before launch. He starts as an antagonist, so they probably want to keep the details of him being a party member secret.
.
Seems kind of pointless.
Everybody that looks at the cover is going to come to the conclusion that he will become a party member.
The DLC costumes give it away too...

shape, position, and animation, the general art style is same. but the art style is "messy"

Is it me or is this game really dark? Think I'll have to tinker a bit with the brightness settings, because it's really hard to see all the stuff happening on screen.
