Hmm, I hate season passes in general, I hope this is for story DLC and not for ridiculous cosmetics...

Guess we'll hear more at Gamescom.

Edit: I revoke this just for swimsuit DLC, am all over that sh!t

See:
From an earlier interview:

JV: The players were very curious to know about Final Fantasy XV DLC? Can you tell us more? Will they be scenario or cosmetic DLC?

HT: We will make a concrete announcement on DLC later this summer. Our basic commitment about it is that they must be used to extend the gaming experience and ensure that players continue to play. We do not want basic DLC. Instead, we want DLC that can provoke the enthusiasm of players.

At E3:

Are there are any plans for downloadable content? I’m curious about additional story content and costumes.

It’s probably because we announced the release date already, but during E3 we got so many questions about DLC. We’re in a state where we’ve pretty much finalized our DLC plans, and our concept for all of our DLC is to make sure that fans who bought the game and played it feel like they’ve made a great purchase. Looking at the DLC plan, there is a lot of stuff I myself am excited to play and give to fans, but right now isn’t the right moment to release those details.

There will be additional story content, costumes, as well as things that don’t fall into those categories that fans will be excited to see. I know we’ve showcased some of our PlayStation VR demos this E3, and those are some things we’re planning to implement and provide as DLC experiences. But obviously, we’re working towards getting this game out on September 30, so most of the priorities are on the main game. Only specific core members are working on the DLC right now.

Is this Eastern Squeenix first season pass? I can't think of any of their other Japanese releases where this has happened. Either way I'm weary.

Do the 20% off coupons work for pre-orders?
No, but if you're talking about the 20% discount code you get from the Play 2016 promotion, then that will be valid till October 4th 11:59PM PT. So you can still get this using that code once it releases on September 30th.

I don't understand what's so bad about a Final Fantasy game having a season pass.

Season Passes are typically an anti-consumer "black box" where companies can get your money up front and then usually underdeliver on their own schedule. Kind of like Kickstarter. Good for them, not so much for us.

It's also a first for the franchise IIRC which makes it the entry point for this series to better nickel and dime its playerbase.

Does SE force people to buy the Season Pass? No. They said they would reveal their DLC plans soon. If you don't like what they announce, don't buy it. As long as it's independent of the main story and comes months after the main game like the widely-praised, meaty Witcher 3 DLCs there's absolutly no issue with it. It's good for those who enjoyed the main game and want more and also good for the studios to help with the ever-exploding budgets of AAA games like this.

In what way is this good news? :/ They've very likely just cut this out of the game if they've already planned this out months before release. I'm already paying 90€ for the Deluxe Edition. Now it will cost me over 100€ to get the full experience? *sigh*

If they already have these planned out to this extent they should have put them into the game. I hate this.

That doesn't mean they are completed though. It would make sense for them to begin on these once the game ships.

Unless you want to wait another year for the game.

Why shouldn't they plan ahead so they can jump straight into the DLC development as soon as the main game is done? It absolutly makes sense with a project this huge. They have to have a strict time schedule especially if people already paid for the Season Pass on release and are expecting something a few months later.

Look I'm not too thrilled on season passes but this "DLC = cut content" idea is pure poppycock perpetuated by people who have no idea how game development works.

I do like buying only finished games. Paying extra for content that should be included in the base game isn't something I'm about to do. The extra year(it won't take that long anyway) would mean the game was more polished anyway.

The main game clearly isn't done if they have planned sections of it being sold already.

Sounds good. Wonder if they'll still feature Noctis or you'll actually play as the other party members the whole time.

Hmm would be cool but I'm not getting my hopes up. However, the good news is this dlc can take place any given time in the story. It could be something occurs during the trip or perhaps a prequel. They got my money day-0.

DLC existing doesn't mean it was ever a part of the game or that it was removed from the game.

Yeah good point just sucks I can't get the theme and have it pre-loaded though.

How do you know this is the case?

Having them playable in their dlc episodes would be great .... however XV's combat is centered all around Noctis' (weapon switching) abilities so I can't really imagine how they would make this exciting gameplay-wise.

Gotta get back all the money they invedted in so many things i guess
Not buying it,but i hope those who do are happy with it n.n

No game will ever truly be done because content gets cut all the time. Deadlines, budget, technical inability...

When a game is made artists and writers and other people involved in the prep stuff usually need something to do afterward while the programmers et al are doing their thing. It's easy to write up a plan for the main stuff, work on that, and then do extra stuff on the side to sell as DLC. That's how development works. Developers have a deadline in mind because it's factually bad to keep working on a single game in mind, and prioritize having whatever's at the core to be done first. More often than not, what we get as DLC would simply not exist if it weren't for that kind of setup.

As long as the game itself feels like a well-rounded experience even without the DLC, and the DLC is basically just a cherry on top of the sundae, what's the problem? If the game comes out and it's a shallow husk, or the DLC is already on the disc, maybe there's a problem. But as others have said the whole "all DLC is just cut content" way of thinking is not the most realistic outlook.

Game development worked for decades before DLC. We got full games back then. It's been countless times by on-disk DLC or day 1 DLC that DLC is nothing more than cut content. Expansion packs are different yes but side-quests like this are not expansion packs.

Because if you buy the game the story isn't told in full unless you buy the DLC released months after?

Wow, basic edition of FFXV on the Japanese PS Store is $6 more expensive than the deluxe edition on the US PS Store.
Digital Deluxe Edition is $85 on the US store and ~$120 on the Japanese store...

Noctis uses Guns, daggers and broadswords. They just wouldn't be able to warp and have a very grounded gameplay. If you think about it he pretty much does what the other characters do.

Right, something like cut content and DLC already on the disc has never happened before, because that is not how game development works... Gimme a break.
