Final Fantasy XV - 50 min video

Crossing Eden

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
lolwut.

The only game that looks better than this when it comes to open worlds on consoles is Horizon. The Witcher 3 cannot even match it.
Look at the screen directly above your post. This game's console version is not as visually impressive as TW3 and i'm not talking about the PC version. There was a time when it was visually ahead of it, (Episode Duscae, all the pc trailers), but those days are long gone and this seems to be the visuals we're stuck with unless there's a pc port. It's telling that the best looking part of all of the footage, is the random ass scene of some unnamed armored asshole taunting Cor before throwing a mini boss at the team.

What? Of course this game is better looking than The Witcher's console version. TW3 has nothing anywhere near as impressive as the summons, for example, or the lighting. Let alone the character models.

Just finished watching the uncompressed trailer.

Before I start with the pointers, I wanted to put this disclaimer out: I am neither a FF expert nor a unrealistic graphics whore (qualifier: Just finished and thoroughly enjoyed Persona 4 on PS3). That said:

Pros:

  • Animation system looks well done given the scale and scope of the game
  • Battle system looks engaging especially given its ad hoc hybrid
  • Character models look like 2D anime come to life with PBR; all in all, well rendered
  • Music seems on point
  • Resource gathering and management system looks to work well
  • Visual details such as getting wet in rain, wind effects, etc are a nice touch
Cons:

  • The graphics range from average (PS4) to terrible (PS4, Xbone):
    1. I have seen and played open world games but the blocky and muddy foliage (first LoD) found here is refreshingly ugly
    2. The lack of AF
    3. The lack of decent anti aliasing
    4. The pitiful pop in of geometry, shadow and textures
    5. Xbone version looks like someone smeared vaseline on the screen
  • The voice acting ranges from average to dissonance inducing. Furthermore, today I learned just how much I dislike the southern accent especially when delivered in such spunky fashion. Lack of JP voice option would be truly terrible.

Overall, I found the visuals bad to the point of distraction from the actual gameplay. Partly, I think it's exacerbated by the fact that it's not all consistently bad. It seems like the game has regressed leaps and bounds when it comes to environmental detail and quality from the earlier footages/demos. Perhaps this game was meant for PS5/XbTwo...

In conclusion, this game is shaping up to be like TW3 on consoles, i.e. best to buy it year late with all the patches released. Either that or one can always wait for the port to PC/Neo/Scorpio.

The Arachne fight for example. There is nothing in TW3 that looks remotely as good. As I said before, the only thing in which TW3 is superior is in foliage. Everything else, FFXV has the upper hand.

Square must unshackle Hiroyuki Itou and he will rise to cleanse this series.

Isn't toriyama working on a undisclosed title.
Maybe FFX-3 spinoff, but fingers cross not FFXVI.

I'm all for Toriyama unleashing his lunacy on X-3 as long as Tidus meeting an exploding blitzball is still in tact.

Just remember that you are in a minority there. ;)

Nothing wrong with it, of course.
No I'm not. There are very few people who would watch this latest footage and say it looks better than Witcher 3 on consoles. If you want we can even put it to test with a poll thread.

Yes, actually you are. Just check out the hands on previews. A lot of them mention the visuals are quite good despite needing some polish.

And there are the technical people saying the game looks just as bad as the images make them out to be.

Blood and wine is one of the most gorgeous games I've played on my ps4, period. Watching that 50 minute preview was painful because there's a good looking game hiding behind the bad hair and AA sure, and maybe I'll have it on pc but no guarantee right now.

Screenshots don't make the game justice. It looks beautiful in motion.

That's all well and good bro, but we're talking about the footage that is the subject of this thread. Looking at the reactions in this thread, I think it's pretty clear I'm not in the minority.

Now i am going to sleep , but i will take some screenshots from ps4 version of the witcher and i want to see you show me how the hell ff 15 at this state is better looking, from the chracter models, to textures, vegetation even lightning. Like someone said it looked good, LOOKED GOOD BEFORE not anymore, at this state this game looks bad.

I am so over the TW3 comparisons. Yes it's superior to FFXV in every way.

But can we talk about the colouring option for Chocobos? Yes, we can finally change the bird's plumage to any colour we want -- in an offline FF game. Poor FFXIII.

I just arrived to this thread and hadn't seen anything. Noticed the Witcher 3 vs FFXV debate. Saw this post, scrolled down slowly, not knowing what to expect. I laughed so hard I think I woke the people in the apartment below me.

You gotta be kidding me here. This is up for debate?

Both look the same to me image quality wise and the backgrounds look flat in both games. W3 just has more grass. That's pretty much it.

Can't wait for an awkward sex scene between Yuna and Titus and he can't get it up.

He's just gonna think about blitzballs and it's all gonna be ok.

What if I told you I prefer the chocobros yellow?

Ouch
Remember when FF used to have colors?

Witcher 3 absolutely looks better in wide open areas. Still, I think we need to compare wide open areas even more just to make sure because it isn't obvious already.

Maybe I don't play enough open world games to know if this should be par for the course or not, but ... well, the environments in FFXV look a hell of a lot worse than those in FFXIV. FFXIV is segmented, so maybe that makes sense, but ...

What is the appeal of this game? If FFXII looked worse than FFXI it would lose a lot of its appeal for me.

I'm being 100% serious. I'll admit FFXV needs more AA other than that I think you guys are getting fooled by the bright, vibrant colors and the fields of grass. Give me a shot of a region in W3 that's more like that PS4 FFXV screenshot.

You mean like a barren steppe with just a few bushes here in there and some groups of cardboard trees? Sorry, there isn't any region like that in The Witcher 3. .__. The vegetation there is generally lush and the LOD may not be the best on console but it looks fairly good even 100 metres away.

Wow, is all of that explorable?

You never played The Witcher 3?

You might want to get on that. The GOTY Edition with both DLCs is releasing soon.

Honestly comparing TW3 to FFXV is a bit unfair to FFXV considering that TW3 is a game which shits upon Bethesda RPGs from a great height. FFXV appears to be "Japan's first open-world RPG" whereas Bethesda has decades of experience and they still got their shit pushed in by CD Projekt Red.
