Eurogamer: Leaked PS4 Slim is legit (bootup video)

Internal Sony memo every gen:

1. Make it smaller
2. Make it cheaper
3. Maker it uglier

The symmetry-loving part of my brain is looking at the thinner top half and not knowing how to feel about this. Lol.

Guessing it's just due to the slot loading disc drive, guessing the bulk of that is on the bottom with the slot near the top of that part. Looks like PS4 Slim has a slot in the side now for the HDD, so the HDD has been moved from above the disc drive to the other side of the console, hence similar design language with the gap, but nothing needed up top of the device anymore, and the gap where it is due to the slot loading disc drive. I think.

So it's real eh? Digital Foundry basically paid the buyer to not put a video up so they'd get the clicks?

It's an ugly machine though, nothing to tempt me away from my launch PS4. And the optical port needs to be on the Neo or it won't be fit for the purpose of Rocksmith.

And my OCD is flaring up over the usb placement, what the fuck is that all about?

Where is #teamfake at right now? LOL at these internet people.

I was Team Fake. It took a bizarre amount of time to get to a video, or a pic of it booting up. As for laughing at us, we're 1-1 with Team Real after the NX 'leak'. We need a tie breaker in the form of a Neo leak.

Something I've been thinking since the announcement of PS+ price going up.

When it was leaked that the Neo could have a more powerful revision, I posted speculation on whether Sony would increase the power of the Neo in response to Scorpio and just offset some of the costs like they did with the PS3 originally.

Posters were quick to point out that stuff like that hasn't happened with this Gen because of the risks and Sony, MS wanting the hardware to be profitable straight away.

But now I'm having the same thoughts. I wonder whether Sony will increase PS+ region by region because they're offsetting the costs of upgrading Neo? It seems far fetched but also probable that it may have happened. They did have 2 Neo revisions and we don't know which one got the Greenlight.

So it will sound like a jet landing, rather than a jet taking off?

Seriously, how do you know this, has it been torn down already? Did the seller get another consignment yet?
Haha nice! It's just a guess because the bottom half is bigger than the top. That'd mean the fan would be flipped upside etc. I could be right off the mark. Also the ventilation is now on the bottom right of the console isn't it?

Do you think they'll focus on Neo revisions from now on? If they can cut costs on both I feel like we will get a 3rd OG revision as well as a slim Neo in a few years. I expect PS5 to be out before we see a Neo slim though.

Of course since 4K is getting more common each year Sony will definitely push it with Neo revision and phase out the OG/Slim completely eventually.

People are stubborn and like cheaper options. I don't think the OG will be phased out at all. It'd fly in the face of what they are aiming for and telling consumers with the whole "forwards compatibility" thing.

Doesn't have a UHD drive.. Which truly baffles me even more. Its like this was an after thought, and they focussed on the NEO instead.
It's a cheaper to make replacement for existing hardware. Why does this keep getting lost over and over?

The S is a new piece of hardware in ADDITION to what MS already offers. This isn't that. It's a replacement.

Probably because the Mobo is flipped upside down. The only way it'll get slimmer is if the add an external power brick or take out the disk drive and have a download only revision.

Toploader, external power brick, & flash storage and it could look the size it does on the boxart. Maybe in 3 years then.

You know... Maybe this isn't even 16nm? As you say it's mobo is flipped, and it originally had ram chips on both sides of it, cooling requirements will have come down since then.

Ew I wouldn't even want to imagine a top loading PS4. Not after the travesty that was the super slim.

I'm guessing the Mobo has been flipped. It'd make sense in order to shave off the top.

As for 16nm, I guess they went with it due to OG'S having the loudness problem.

It's ugly and that's why I was hoping it was fake. If Sony wasn't coming out with a Neo, there's no way I'd trade my current Ps4 for that. Really don't like the design.

PS4 mobo was always upsidedown is what I meant.

They could actually be loving all this attention, otherwise the 'slim' announcement might have been lost in all the Neo discussions post event.

Think of it as they treat their second class announcements prior to E3. Plus it will give them the potential for some funny lines in their presentation.

Lots of people didn't like the OG when it came out either but they warmed up to it. Same with the PS3, now mostly everyone likes the phat model design better when it was hated at first.

No it's not? They aren't making fat Xbox Ones any more.

The difference is the S is the new full priced box, with added features to justify maintaining that same price. The PS4 slim is the same standard PS4 but cheaper, and the Neo is that new fancy box.

The idea of the PS4 slim has been standard operating procedure since like the SNES days at least? But for some reason the S has made everyone forget.

It's as cheap as they can make it. No UHD, same size HDD as original, every corner cut (literally).

People expecting any upgrade or improvement over the current model have misunderstood what this is: it's purely about cost saving for Sony, production costs, shipping costs. If they can cut the retail price to push higher volumes and drive PS+ subs and games sales then great, but its single reason for existing is cost reduction.

If you want an improved model, wait for Neo.

I mean, for one, it remains to be seen what the PS4 slim's price is, and two, the Xbox One S is only "full price" because the fat Xbox One got price drops leading up to the S's announcement.

I would agree that the One S is "let's make an improved Xbox One" and the PS4 slim seems to be "let's make a budget PS4", though.

Sony has always made smaller and cheaper systems for their revisions. The original always has the bells and whistles and things get dropped and get cheaper as the years go on.

I don't know why people were expecting a better looking PS4 than the original with this one.

Xbox One S is an anomaly because Microsoft got the Surface Pro team to re-design the system and it IS an improvement over the original design. Sony doesn't do that. You aren't meant to upgrade your PS4 to this one. This one is for new owners.

Right, the idea that people can't seem to even comprehend the slim not having a UHD drive is silly, considering the entire history of the home console. This PS4 slim simply being a standard PS4 shouldn't be any kind of a shock. Especially when we know there is a Neo.

I wasn't one of them. When Sony published pictures of the OG Ps4 online I loved the design right away. I've actually tried to like this slim but I'm sorry. It just looks ugly.

Cute, but the two are obviously competing with each other and adjust based on what the other is doing.

So basically what you're saying is, if MS didn't release a slim model, Sony wouldn't have either? lol ok.

Of course. Why would Sony want to actively save money on parts and manufacturing? Clearly the only reason they have a slim is to combat MS's slim.

I think it looks nicer than the original PS4. It's really not that far off from it so I don't know what people are complaining about.

Eh... the PS2 Slim retained almost all features of the original aside from HDD support and the IEEE 1394 port.

But the goal of the slim is not to entice current owners to trade their OG PS4's. If someone decides to do it because the system is smaller, quieter, etc that's a plus.

The system aimed at the current installed base in addition to new owners is the PS4 Neo.
