Also, protagonist is named Ethan, and he is looking for his wife in the mansion, as pointed out by Gematsu

http://www.esrb.org/ratings/Synopsis.aspx?Certificate=34575&Title=Resident+Evil+7

Content Descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language

Rating Summary: This is a survival-horror game in which players assume the role of Ethan, a man searching for his missing wife in a derelict mansion. From a first-person perspective, players explore the environment and use pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives and chainsaws to kill mutant creatures. Combat is accompanied by realistic gunfire, screams of pain, and exaggerated blood-splatter effects. As players progress through the story, cutscenes can depict instances of gore and intense acts of violence: a character's arm dismembered by a chainsaw; a man's leg taken off at the knee with a shovel; a character impaled through the face with a shovel. Some areas also depict mutilated corpses with exposed organs/viscera. The words “f**k” and “sh*t” are heard in the dialogue.

What would be great was the developers would actually show a trailer of what the fucking game play actually looks like rather than having people speculate about it.

Game is months away from coming out and we still haven't seen any combat yet.

The build-up to this game's release feels insanely low-key for a mainline Resi.

Just another Amnesia hide-n-seek game now. Sad.

Lol, so much for the "Finally we are going back to scary Resident Evil" crowd. Even RE 6 didn't have flamethrowers and chainsaws.

Got to wait how it is executed in context but FYI there was a flamethrower in REmake and that game still had excellent atmosphere and "scare" factor going for it.

I find myself doubting Capcoms ability to make an FPS that feels good to play. Have they ever made an FPS before?

Wow... That sounds cool....... Then I remembered it,s an FPS game...:(
Can't play an FPS game because of motion sickness...

i mean resident evil 2 had rocket launchers , Gatling guns , grenade launchers, flamethrowers & a machine gun as well

Sorry, what about using a flamethrower and a chainsaw will make this game not scary?

I'm just remembering the "Fear you can't forget" campaign from RE 5 where they make it out to be the scariest game ever and then it turns out you are put in shooting galleries by the end of the game, fight wacky science powered Wesker, and can have 60+ bullets in your handgun/15+ bullets in your rifle/can carry around 20+ grenade rounds. That's all.

For all the flack Capcom gets for their business practices and certain mechanics, they have incredible game designers and related and I have no doubt they can make a stellar first person Resident Evil experience.

Man, Resident Evil fans are a weird bunch.

Can you explain what any of that has to do with contradicting them when they say they're bringing horror back? With the exception of the flamethrowing, both Silent Hill and Silent Hill 2 have all those weapons. Are they suddenly not scary?

Man, Resident Evil fans are a weird bunch.

It's an off hand comment. Is it weird that I've never found RE to be scary and find it funny that they are trying so hard to make it scary? As apprehensive as I am about the changes, the truth of the matter is that it probably hasn't changed that much from previous entries and I wouldn't have found it scary to begin with and I'll find it less so when I use a chainsaw to kill a zombie.

kamineko

Does his best thinking in the flying car
The weapons are just in the VHS tapes

Ethan gameplay is pure stealth, obviously

Unless they drop the stealth, because PT is not a stealth game

Cool, so you'd rather not actually see the gameplay at all, before the game is released? Must be great to be so satisfied with blind purchases.

They said going into it they'd be secretive about the game leading up to launch, I don't mind being drip fed clips of the game if it means maintaining the mystery.

We'll obviously see the combat and other mechanics that we haven't seen yet before the game launches, people just need to wait for it.

Again, they have not shown combat because they haven't even shown the enemies yet

We didn't know they were "mutant creatures" before this ESRB rating

If they are seriously dedicated to making a horror game you want to preserve as much of that mystery as possible. I understand that people want their worries to be eased (or justified) but you don't need to make your purchase decision 5 months in advance here

I mean... bit weird they're keeping this stuff under wraps, isn't it? Especially with a pretty good amount of people on the fence. There isn't even really that long until this comes out.

My hype would probably triple if I saw just a tiny bit of combat.

I've seen the game or at least enough to know I want it. It's not blind at all. I'll read previews leading up to its release to be sure, but I'm going dark when it comes to video coverage. Trailers for everything now show FAR too much.

I thought we already new this.

Weapons, yes. Chainsaws and flamethrows, I don't think we knew about.

Simply the existence of certain weapons doesn't necessarily mean anything for the tone. RE1 and 2 had flamethrowers, and there's been even heavier weapons in the series since day 1. Even Silent Hill has had chainsaws and a flamethrower.

Yes, the bullet points have been shown ad nauseum. Ironically, no actual gameplay that verifies this has been shown yet however.

This is an ESRB rating, not marketing or PR. We now know for sure that combat is present, and about the existence of multiple weapon types.

if only the game weren't coming out tomorrow

That's quite the 180.

This is an ESRB rating, not marketing or PR. We now know for sure that combat is present, and about the existence of multiple weapon types.

Actually, what we "know" is:

1. They said that they didn't want players to feel as helpless as they are in a game like Amnesia.
2. There will be combat.

This says absolutely nothing what so ever about how much combat there actually will be. The apologists for what they haven't shown yet are amazing. Is this bizarro world where you show the least compelling aspects of your game first to entice people? If anything, this feels more like the game isn't even close to being half finished, and they can't show the combat, because it's not even implemented yet.

Not really

"My motivation for not being able to talk too much about that stuff is really because back in 1996 those of us who weren’t working on the game had the experience of playing Resident Evil with a sense of mystery," Nakanishi tells me. "You know… 'Where am I?' 'What’s happening to these people?' 'What are these enemies like?' 'Where are they going to come from?' 'What’s the story behind them?'

"That mysteriousness is so vital to what we want to get across and what emotions we want you to feel. Again, I tend to repeat myself, every time you ask for more information, but we’re trying to keep it to the minimum as much as possible, so when you finally get your hands on the game it’s going to be such a fresh new experience. You won’t be bored of it already."
