COMICS! |OT| August 2016. That's Rare Groove. Volume is Crucial.

I actually have the Secret Warriors Omnibus and yeah it's amazing. Great cast of characters and really the last time Nick Fury was used well before being thrown in the trash. It was the first Marvel book I really got into along with Invincible Iron Man and Brubakers run on Daredevil.
.

Ding ding, we got a winner here! Bruabaker is a true favourite of mine man, his Cap run kicking off after disassermbled was what really dragged me back into comics after I moved to the city for University and actually had a local comic store for the first time in my life (even if your prices are terrible forbidden planet glasgow, I can give you this). I'd only really dabbled with some books for a few months before that, but it really blew me away. His run on Daredevil is absolutely brilliant though, both his Cap and Daredevil runs are my favourite stuff for those characters. And yes, poor Nick, Bru and Hickman treated him so well. I don't think it was Aaron's intention for him to be shit out like that to be fair, I think he was a huge Steranko/Fury fan growing up, he probably had further plans for him but there's the whole awkward movie thing marvel have going on.

Not a lot of comic stuff for me to share today, other than starting watching Preacher tonight after enjoying the pilot a few weeks ago. Been pushing hard to get through Gerald's game. May be the most chilling book I've ever read, I keep finding I have to put it down after a few chapters at a time, some really disturbing stuff. The basic premise is a middle aged housewife gets into an argument with her husband during a weekend away at their cabin, during a sex game. She accidently kicks him off the bed and kills him///while she is chained to the bed with handcuffs. The basic story of the book is just literally, what can she do. She's on her own, she can't get uncuffed, and no-one to call for help. The book goes down a dark dark well though, that are some other aspects to the book I won't mention for fear of spoilers, but it's chilling man. This is King after he sobered up and got off the drugs at the end of the 80s, and jesus, did he have some pent up things he had to let out as a result. Just a few years later he would write the Green Mile as well, whichh while have its own depressing subject matter, is a very emotional, sad book to read. This is sad going on depressing. But it deals with some really strong themes, and gives a spotlight to some of the more depressing realities of abuse.

Oh, yea, been meaning to show these to you guys. We moved into our first owned home last year, and in preparation, my partner who is a super serious cross stitcher made these. One is hanging above the hangers where the coats etc go, and the other she did for my little computer study/comic den. Theyre obviously not original art or anything but they honestly took her ages to complete, and I think theyre pretty awesome!

That was a good time for me as a burgeoning comic fan, indulging myself in all these different books and characters. Brubaker is one of my favourite writers I loved reading his Cap run and everything he's done with Bucky has made him one of my most loved characters.

Hah I've been in that Forbidden Planet many a time and bought overpriced comics, lately we just go in whenever we're visiting Glasgow just to see if there's anything I'm not aware of being released and to ogle the Hot Toys.

Love that Thor piece! we're saving up for a mortgage right now so something like that would be cool to hang in my game/reading room.

Those are way cooler than original art. Love em.

Cheers for the kind words guys! :) It makes our hobby seem comparatively brainless haha, she's working on a Lost thing right now and she's been at it for weeks. I keep saying, just get into comics ha! I'm pretty proud of those though, I think she's maybe going to do a Daredevil or Punisher thing next, she loved season 2 of the show.

Aw, there really isn't anything like it when you're literally just getting in to comics and the world is your oyster, so many great runs to be collected. Bru is a fucking superstar though, theyve really fumbled Bucky too without him, I couldn't careless about thunderbolts sadly. I really liked the short LAtour/Klein run, they had something there. Looking forward to the Black Widow book hitting trade. Waid on spy stuff will be different, not sure I've read anything from him like that, but his daredevil run was great and he keeps hitting those characters I like.

Hahah wait Hagi, are you Scottish man? Or just family here or something?

Over time I've slowly begun to prefer Superman and Lex Luthor as far as hero/villain relationships go. Two people who are ideal pinnacles of humanity, with Supes being a physical and moral peak, while Lex is essentially the modern ideological version of a "perfect" man is (money, looks, intelligence). Both of whom claim to want to bring humanity to its peak and get it to strive to become better. The difference, of course, being that Lex's motives are out of greed and ambition, while Supes does what he does out of a simple intrinsic kindness and physical capabilities.

I'm butchering my analysis a lot because I have to go to work, but it's a relationship I've begun to prefer. I find Batman/Joker too shallow and repetitive for my liking nowadays.

I admit Supes has been growing on me the last few months. He kind of embodies one of my favorite quotes.

I haven't actually read any of his work! What should I read?

None. None what so ever man. He did give brandon graham prophet though and that was great. Worth hunting that down. I liked keatinge's glory book too. Just can't recommend anything he wrote or drew himself though.

Just to add a little context to that. As a youngster, I had the entire runs of Youngblood, bloodstrike, brigade, new men, supreme, all the extreme studios stuff basically. I have returned to them throughout the years and outside of a base nostalgia for them because i was a kid and extremely shallow action books were fine then, there is really very little redeemable or of merit about them. It was a time in the industry we had to pass through to get where we were going. That's it for me personally.

Man, I don't think I've fallen so much in love with a movie like I have with Spider-Man 2 in a long, long time. I'm probably going to watch both 1 and 2 again tonight since my friends are lame and playing d&d.

In celebration I'm returning to my read-through of The Amazing Spider-Man now hovering around the #60 mark. I'm looking forward to finally getting out of the Lee era, though I know I have a ways to go. Getting quite tired of his inability to write logical relationship drama. Also Gwen really is lacking in an sort if personality. I can see why they killed her off lol

My fucking hell, Felicia is character assassinated worse then I expected. She is willing to kill three persons because they bought some of the stuff she stole before SpOck put her in prison.
What the hell.
I actually like what Slott setup with her intially, but it's been squandered by him and other writers.
oh no don't get me wrong, dude wrote great stuff

it's just, in 2016, Mark Waid is super fucking bad, to the point where I'm actively avoiding any book his name is on (except Black Widow)

His current output seems fine to me lol.

Yeah they've really screwed the pooch with Bucky he's just become another casualty of sidekicks who nobody but like one person knows what to do with. You'll really enjoy Black Widow I'm an issue behind but it's been fantastic so far.

It's great to see fresh faces in here. Wish we had more of the old(er) guard though. Cheska, fauxtrot, Filthy, Rafa, Rrongfield, slightconfuse, etc... I miss y'all.
The time is 23:40 here and I'm done for the day. I'll put up the actual books in the bookshelf tomorrow. Tonight was manga, comics and huge volumes' time. I'll rest now so see y'all tomorrow~

Looks nice! I'm getting a new bookcase when I move so I'll post pictures once I get it setup.

On another note, I just finished reading King City and (shockingly) I loved it. I really like how Graham just kinda draws and writes whatever he feels like doing. Everything just kind of flows and curves throughout and he puts insane details into EVERYTHING. It's such a treat to just scan through the backgrounds or spreads to find little jokes and things scattered throughout. Seriously love his art. Reminded me a bit of Akira at points with the backgrounds and tech stuff at points.

Overall story was fun stuff too. Joe was a really down-to-earth guy in this strange setting who was fun to follow.

Also dug the random extras in the back of the trade too. The random pinups, drawings, shorts, etc. all felt like they came out of a manga tankoubon or something. Fitting that Tokyopop helped with publishing.

Looks great. Now stop buying so many books and get a bigger TV. The extra space is making me anxious.

Awesome, I think the trade drops in October, samnee is worth price of admission alone, he did some nice work on the shortlived cap and bucky series actually. I'm in Ayrshire myself, so just a half hour out from Glasgow. As a student I stayed over there but sadly those days are gone! And there's definitely no comic stores here haha.

Brilliant! So much manga, I wish I could even get started on manga but after comics, I just don't have the money.

Last post before bed(brushing my teeth): This is my room at my mother's place. I mostly use the TV as a bigger screen for my Mac and when I want to turn on the old PS3.

Now my father's place on the other hand, there I'll have to take a picture of our TV one of these days. Let's just say that PS4 games look great on it and I'm eagerly waiting on the Neo so I can play 4K BD at last.

My father and I are both extreme film lovers.

It's what I read while on a comic break for around a decade. That first DB volume is from when I was 12.

Now I have to turn to the bed for real.

If someone could do a list of what JLA issues to grab in that Blue Beetle CMX sale while I sleep I'd be grateful.

Good times and bum times,
I've seen them all and, my dear, I'm still here.
Plush HCs sometimes,
Some comics just MU trash tier, but I'm here.
I've stuffed the floppies in my shoes.
Flipped through trades and sung the blues,
Seen all my dreams disappear,
But I'm here.

(I guess "Bring Him Home" as "Bring Them Home" would be more appropriate.)

I just started re-reading Ms Marvel earlier so with that Thor and Totally Awesome Hulk I'm on a pretty good win streak this weekend.

Nighthawk has been canceled, but according to Walker, "Marvel/Axel has been very supportive" and the company "has made it clear that they want more of Nighthawk and Tilda".

I loved the book, but it started off poorly in terms of sales so I expected this and I can only hope that the characters end up in a cool book with better sales potential.

Hm. So I cracked open one of the Suicide Squad statues to see what they look like...

Maybe it wasn't a mistake after all. They actually look really good. Pretty much exactly like the prototypes. Harley's stockings are actual fabric instead of sculpted, and the paint application is actually solid. They're both about 12" tall. Probably one of the best things I've seen DCC put out in the statue department. I'm pretty shocked.

you're getting an awful lot of statues without taking any pics. If Messi were here, he'd take pics.

I love Waids Archie. One of my favorite books to read every month and a book my wife and I get to enjoy together.

i have to agree - Waid is in classic form with Archie. i'm smiling nonstop, every issue.

Archie is really into that Sabrina-Jughead crossover lol.

as they should - Sabrina sold me after that amazing Afterlife w/ Archie #6 issue & i'll def check out Jughead now that Henderson is off art

'90s haters. And what comic site, besides this one obviously, is the best to get info from?

Pffft. I dunno man, I just kind of browse a bunch of em. CBR, newsarama, multiversity, comicosity. I really just get whatever info i need from solicits, I just look at all those for interviews, reviews if I'm not familiar with a writer/artist. 100% honest though, some of the books I'm interested and want to know about are never covere,d not even by the smaller more indie-centric books. So alot of time I will just turn to a creator's twitter for info. Comic writers & artists are generally super welcoming of questions and very open to people, I've had some great discussion with writers & artists on there. SO often I'll scroll a twitter page for info and if it's not there jsut ask, like when a book veers off schedule etc.
