If they do Golden Axe I hope they don't do the Mega Drive version like they did for Altered Beast.

I agree. The arcade version looks better and is more satisfying to play. I always enjoy playing through it once in a while on the Wii Virtual Console :)

Since all 3D Classics games let you switch between International and Japanese versions, I wonder if this infamous cutscene from the Japanese version would still be allowed to be included:

Probably not tbh. Decaps are an instant Cero Z rating. This means the game wouldn't be allowed to be displayed at retail.

So that's Outrunners dead in the water then??......cant understand why anyone would chose Turbo over Runners, Turbo lost the soul and atmosphere the first game had and Runners bought that soul and atmosphere back....not to the same degree but still felt more like Outrun than Turbo could ever wish to be!!

It's gotta be that Outrunners is too tough to port to 3DS. That game has so many sprites onscreen. I love it. Hope to see it one day.

I'm sure system 32 games are doable, but the fact that we haven't seen any yet is, well, thems the breaks I guess.

Most likely. Given that Turbo Outrun was basically a modified version of Outrun on the same hardware, it's probably an easier porting job if they can reuse code done for the original Outrun 3D Classics release.

Still, there's three other titles awaiting announcement. Not giving up hope yet.

Just the fact that Outrunners was a possibility is amazing.

But the fact that it's probably not happening makes me quite sad.

One of the most intense racers...ever.

Oh man, I thought it included Outrunners...

One of the few arcade games I've ever got to play and a very nostalgic game for me. Love the atmosphere. But I'm happy to see all the love for this game!

Oh yeah, it'll be Alien Storm I bet. I always get that mixed up with Alien Syndrome.

Speaking of "Alien" games, if they were going to do some Mega Drive stuff, I'd love Alien Soldier.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Holy shit, Turbo Outrun is confirmed? That's amazing. I've always wanted to play that game.

Never been a fan of Outrunners' look, so if that's not on there, I'm not terribly bothered.

I've been thinking about that "You can see the Universe!"-quote, and suddenly I remembered another game that fits this description: Ristar.

So they're partial emulation? How's that work for Galaxy Force II for example given it's doubled framerate, Neo Classics sprites and streamed audio?

I'm pretty sure the arcade version was 60FPS to begin with. (Outrun is 30FPS and they did explain how they upgraded that game to 60FPS but I forget the specifics; I don't think it's interpolation like the Saturn version.)

Streamed audio isn't especially difficult to do, and the version that's on the compilation was actually updated to use emulated audio in-game.

If they do Golden Axe I hope they don't do the Mega Drive version like they did for Altered Beast.

I'd prefer the MD version in this case, it doesn't look as nice but it plays better and has more content. (That being said, Revenge of Death Adder is the only one I'd really be interested in. Why bother with Golden Axe when SOR2 is right there?)

Did the previous Archives releases have any pre-order bonuses?

They had clear files, reproductions of old flyers, things like that.

Still going to stick with my preference for arcade ports above all else. Particularly anything from the system 16 lineage. I'll freely admit that Golden Axe as it is isn't one of my all-time favorite Sega games, but it is a noteworthy one, and I'd not mind seeing the arcade version. Much like Altered Beast, it was still a letdown to see the Mega Drive version used.

Also, on an unrelated note, I guess System 24 games would be a no-go on the 3DS due to the resolution alone.

I'm keeping up hope for Ristar or Alien Soldier, the former would look fantastic with M2's 3D conversion efforts, and the latter could really use a bonus mode that lets you map the controls to more buttons cause I'm terrible at Alien Soldier.

Extra pick: give us Super Fantasy Zone so it isn't possible to buy one of these compilations without getting a FZ game.

aw man ive never played it, don't say that!
In the OutRun interpreter that's available for PC you could tweak the camera angle so you could see more of the road (making the game easier).

I highly doubt M2 would tweak Turbo OutRun to have this, but if they did the game would be legitimately awesome instead of being complete garbage due to the poor angle.

Most requested and first new game is Turbo OutRun

What, really?!

Man.

I was one of the folks who initially wished for both Outrun and Turbo to be included but I never thought they'd actually choose it over Outrunners or something else like Revenge of Death Adder or Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Quite surprising if this actually ends up being one of the new games!

I've been thinking about that "You can see the Universe!"-quote, and suddenly I remembered another game that fits this description: Ristar.

This or one of the Phantasy Star games perhaps? That's kind of a big omission at this point right?

Yeah, Phantasy Star could also be the game they're hinting at. The capital U in that "Universe"-quote could be a reference to Phantasy Star Universe.

Which game of the first four in the series has the highest chance of being ported?

Isnt miracle world considered the besr ak game with only 1 or 2 other games being good?

I don't know if it was any good, but it was built into my SMS console so it's automatically the best. Probably not a good candidate for this collection though, the graphics seem too basic for a good 3D showcase.

Miracle World and Shinobi World are pretty good (the latter is a bit short, though).

The Lost Stars is fun, but it's also quite simplistic and linear. Each level you just run from left to right to the exit, with hardly any verticality in the levels.
I've never played the arcade version, though. That one has co-op play, which might be a nice way to experience the game.

High-Tech Land is supposed to be atrocious. It actually even isn't a 'real' Alex Kidd game. It's based on some Japanese cartoon and was rebranded as an Alex Kidd game in the West.

Gameplay-wise, Enchanted Castle resembles Miracle World the most of all the sequels and spin-offs. I haven't played it much though.

There's also an Alex Kidd BMX game, but I don't know if that one's worth playing.

From all those Alex Kidd games I mentioned, I've played The Lost Stars the most. It was my first Alex Kidd game and the colourful graphics and simple but fun gameplay kept me coming back.

Part of me wants to say none of them; as they've explained, top-down pixel art games use lots of weird unnatural perspectives to create the illusion of being 3D, so when you add true 3D stereoscopic perspective they look like crap and there isn't much you can do to make the effect look natural, short of redrawing everything or replacing it with polygons/voxels, etc.

For that reason, I'd say the first game is probably the most likely to get the 3D treatment: a lot of the game is shown from first-person perspective and the top-down sections are relatively small, so they'd take the least amount of work to recreate.

In terms of what's actually fun and worth playing again, 4 holds up the best and 1 and 2 are still reasonably popular even though they're much harsher games (but you could make them much nicer with just a few tiny tweaks). 3 is not fondly remembered and will never get re-released on its lonesome.

I really like Turbo OutRun :'(

:')

It's not as great of an experience as the original Outrun, but it is kind of a weird, underexposed variant of it that I'm interested to see retouched.

I was kind of excited to get a chance to play it on the actual hardware a couple years back. I hadn't had the chance up until then.

I'll admit I'm once again revealing my bias towards arcade releases with these Sega 3D classics, but Alex Kidd games could be pretty archaic at times, especially Enchanted Castle. Lost Stars is pretty linear, but it's still one of the more accessible games in the series.

Yeah, I'm with you in this. I believe it's never been ported before so that makes it a cool addition for me. That and the fact that it takes even more explicit inspiration from Cannonball Run and its Trans-American race. The music is cool as well.

Just for clarity, is there a chance they'll do both Turbo Outrun - it being the no. 1 pick listed earlier - as well as another game that is hinted at with those "you'll see the universe" lines? And what about Power Drift? Any chance we'll see that as well outside of Japan, maybe in a new wave for the West?

Power Drift is already on the collection already released in NA and coming soon to EU.

And Turbo Outrun did get ported to Mega Drive and FM Towns various euro computers and such. It's Outrunners that never really got ported to anything (the Mega Drive port doesn't count)

There's apparently three more titles to be announced for the JP third collection, according to the official website.

I prefer arcade stuff tbh I feel those games are better suited for handheld gameplay, as in fast sessions while on public transport, and also that many of the megadrive games were released or have a chance to be released at some point in the future.

Arcade games? we barely get conversions of most of these games.

Yeah. Most of the Mega Drive games people are asking for have been ported and rereleased and anthologized multiple times already, be it via Virtual Console or collection discs or Steam. Especially stuff like the MD Sonic games, there's countless ways to play those. Perfect ports of arcade games are a lot harder to come by or were only released for the most popular games or on relatively obscure or defunct platforms.

Power Drift: so it's only available in the physical collection then, not separately for folks like me who have most of them already?

Turbo Outrun: ahh, you're right! My mistake, thought of Outrunners for a second there. Yeah, getting that game would have been awesome as well.

3 more games left: cool! The more the merrier.

So far, yeah, it's only available in the collection as far as I know. Although I believe Sega did recently release a standalone digital version of Puyo Puyo Tsu in Japan. So maybe eventually it'll be standalone.

I've been working on a project and I was wondering if a fellow 3D Classics fan would be willing to help me out. Is there anybody here who'd be willing and able to translate the Game.Watch interview for the original Archives release? It's pretty clear by now that it's never getting an official English release :(
