That 6TF Scorpio announcement did change the perception of Neo spec, at the same time, I think 4.2TF have equal if not more effect on Scorpio.
In few days, Sony will show console gamer what games look like in 4.2TF compare to 1.8TF, we will most likely get the impact.
By E3 next year, we will get used to 4.2TF games, our standard raised, MS sure as hell need more than 1.8 extra TF to impress anyone.

Same thing happen to this thread will happen to coming Scorpio reveal thread, people will ask for upgrade, expect lower price, maybe even worse than this thread, way worse.

But, but... 4K gaming is so much "better"!

You're talking about DX11. DX12 + Async Compute utilizes 100% of the GCN ALUs.

There's not many DX12 games right now, and some of the implementations of it aren't that great, so DX11 performance is mostly all we can judge that GPU by for now sadly.

Sometimes I forget the GAF bias for Sony. Thanks for reminding me, hahaha.

This is a press conference to reveal a new console, not E3 2017.

Where did this twin APU idea of yours suddenly come from onQ?

It sounds very much like Ken Kutaragi's original twin Cell CPU dream.

It's not twin APU it's 1 APU the APU that's in the PS4 slim that will be used for base mode plus a new GPU.

And it come from looking at what is available.

So this is happening in 3 days... and my PS4 seems like it is dying today.

Well played, gremlins, well played.

This!!

My ps4 has been loud for a few months but today its absolutely exploded in noise. Cannot even trade in as i removed stickers to clean it our properly. Honestly it sounds horrendous

Or you'll end up with similar graphics on neo and Scorpio and Scorpio having better performance. Kind of like with ps4 and Xbo except reversed.

After thinking about it more, for some reason I expect the Neo to have more RAM as well. Either an extra 2gb or an extra 4gb (more likely). If they want to focus on higher resolutions then they'll also want to allow more room for higher resolution textures. I'm now going with 50% more ram + an additional APU or GPU + premium materials for the chassis = $549.99 and available 2nd week of October.

Cerny is going to come out directly and run 3DMark for 30 min. Jaws will drop. Then he brings on Ryan from Anandtech to give his impressions and benchmark results. House then gets on stage to announce the price and the show ends.

What? They don't need to. Neo itself is already enough. They can, but I'm not expecting anything with TGS this close and PSX not so far away.

If the whole pitch for Neo is "better looking/running games", then they should probably show games that look and run better.

With PS4 NEO hardware APU and all pretty similar to OG PS4 will it be easier for devs to develop for both?

Scorpio seems like it will be entirely different compared to OG XB1 so tougher for devs.

I think that's what Sony was going for this generation just a simple upgraded PS4 in the middle but then a very different hardware PS5 will appear couple of years later.

i'm glad youre not in charge of conferences.

im hyped for neo, but games still matter most.

We wouldn't even be talking about "upgraded spec" and other related stuff if it weren't for the Scorpio preannouncement thing.

I'm pretty sure the debate over how much horsepower was enough began with the original leak following GDC. Scorpio may have added fuel to the fire, but it didn't start it.

Re. A new binary for Neo, as of the leaked Dec presentation there was to be a single CPU binary for both Neo and standard PS4. Distinct ones for GPU.

Unless someone has solid info on a change of plans, all signs point to the improved Jaguar.

Jaguar and Zen share an instruction set. One binary would run in both.

I showed before that the Killzone demo at the show was using way above 4GB already. Read the PDF on Guerrilla's website for the full breakdown. At least they must have known about the 8GB.

Dev kits had double the planned RAM, which is pretty typical, so that's no firm indication of what Guerilla knew and when. Sony just decided to go with a fully-populated board for production units at some point leading up to the announcement.

The second APU is just upsoldered.

Solid gold, thanks for making me smile this morning.

And it come from looking at what is available.

I see..So two separate chips? Or a single APU/MCM with PS4 chip+36CU Polaris GPU?

I just can't see anything other than the simple 36CU+Jaguar APU customised with a PS4 base mode at 4.2TF. Maybe we get a small clock bump around +200MHz on both CPU/GPU. 3 days!

Gabe Newell walks on the stage and announces Steam for the PlayStation 4, Hazardous Environments starts playing in the background and then the Steam logo quickly shifts to the number 3.

I'm guessing MCM

The APU & GPU wouldn't be stacked on top of each other but stacked on top of a interposer it could be a MCM like the picture below but replace Greenland GPU with the 36 CU Polaris chip & replace the Zeppelin CPU with the APU from the PS4 slim

That was the PS4 reveil though. If you expect something similar to that I think you are going to be dissapointed.

Exactly, I feel that people are blowing this out of proportion. Of course there's going to be games show there but they're probably ones that we've already seen, just upgraded.

Well, onQ, do you know why Sony and Microsoft both went APU this generation? Because it simplifies design (and lowers the costs) a ton and the semi-custom process of AMD still allowed somewhat powerful machines back then.

There is absolutely no reason to assume Sony is going to make the machine overly complex again. Neo will feature a newer APU, just one chip, one that wasn't possible in 2013 but is now. I bet my left nut on it.

wait, do people really expect a full blown conference? like the ps4 introduction in feb 2013?
i honestly expect something closer to the psvr release date anouncement (here is the slim and the new price, this is the neo+introduction video with dev comments, maybe a comparison video).

Considering they're calling this a "Playstation Meeting", the exact same title they used in 2013 for the PS4 announcement, it certainly points to a full blown conference.

The venue is smaller, Sony keeping the event low key, no theater experience, no social media promotion or anything, it's not going to be as shiny for sure.

Other than the titan x, where have you seen Gddr5 in a 12Gb config? People keep bringing up 12Gb but didn't someone say that would require some custom finagling, unlike 8/16Gb?

I think there will be a fair amount of games shown (somewhere between 5 and 10), but I think almost all of them will be games we know about and maybe even stuff that's already out. I think we get one or two announcements at most.
