What if Sony does a Nintendo and don't say/release Neo specs because people are just going to be disappointed it's not close to a scorpio. Sony going to just say the neo runs ps4 games and vr games better with ability to upscale to 4k. I don't think Sony going to make a big deal about the specs.

This. I guess they won't tell us the exact clockspeeds etc. anyway.

Here are my predictions for the PS meeting:

•A minute talk about easing people into new iterative console generations, 4K, UHD, options to the consumers and maybe HDR.

All of that sounds very reasonable besides this. I don't think Sony will try and make explanations for a new future of iterative hardware. I think they will explain the NEO in a vacuum by stressing that its an optional upgraded unit for a different segment of the marketplace than a next generation console, and people using the current PS4 won't be left in the dust

I think they will mention specs.

As long as they stress that its an optional iterative unit that isn't their version of a PS5, it should be fine. Plus, i don't think expectations are to the point where they think the phantom of a Scorpio a year out would make them not want to focus on that for their new launch.

If "accomplishing their goals" means delivering a shitty port that runs at 15-20fps, then hell no.

Thing is gpgpu is neither free nor easy to achieve in any way. But it gets off-topic.
Usually tech teams know what they do and the hardware is what it is.

JC2 runs fine on last generation consoles, and Jaguar is 2.5 to x3 more capable than Xenon. There's no excuse for such a bad result for JC3 besides improper coding or bad engine utilization.
You're still confusing MIPS with flops. Xenon and especially Cell were SIMD-heavy processors.

What does that have to do with developers being responsible for making their game work on a competent manner.
All I'm saying is that Sony/MS have very lax criteria for 3rd party games.

Games like Skyrim (PS3) or JC3 should have been released in such a state. Nintendo would have never allowed this crap.

•Closing the show with a big punch like RDR (if it wasn't at the start) OR FFVII Remake OR something else BIG.

•THE FUCKING END!

•HYPE!
If either one of those legends shows up they should definitely save it for the end. Sony's last two conferences didn't have the best endings IMO. Ending with either would be amazing.

If they want to sell a costly upgrade they have to explain in detail just how big an upgrade it is and why it's worth it.

Besides, if they don't then it'll just come from eurogamer the week it's released, so why hide it?

Let the games do the talking. Sony have a chance to show console gamers the jump from 1.8TF to 4.2TF for the first time, they don't need detail spec talk.
MS will have harder time to impress us with the jump from 4.2TF to 6TF.

Games aren't free either. They cost $60 a pop last time I checked.

I've said it before: GPGPU is a decade old technology. It should be a thing by now.

You guys remind me of the "CPU multi-threaded programming makes no sense, it's so hard and hardly anyone has a quad-core CPU" mantra. Guess what, developers had to adapt to the new status quo. We don't live in 1994 anymore (where only Sega Saturn had a dual-core CPU).

I don't think they will give us the cold hard numbers since well.. There's nothing sexy about that and a large amount of the viewers won't understand jack of what they're saying.

At most we'll get a 'This has over the 3x the graphical power of the original playstation 4, and allows developers to create visuals like A, B and C.'

What specific info did we get from the PS4 reveal even? 8GB GDDR5 Ram aaand?

And? You are also free to not spend your money on games that technically disappoint you.

It us and people are using it. Perhaps it's the tech itself that it isn't used more because the gpu stalls are not that often happening as people wish?

You remind me of the typical arm chair developer, being completely distant to what engine devs do every day but come up with their theory about how these people should work.

Written like someone that tries to understand technical things, but doesn't really.

- "DDR5" lol
- Using 4K and 4k formatting in the same sentence

I love it when they write PlayStation wrong. It's PlayStation and not Playstation.
Biggest fanboys but don't even know how to write PlayStation. Hilarious.

Ok, so you are basically saying anything teraflops can be upmicrocoded to actually be a CELL chip?

You need to seek professional help. Or shut up on technical topics. One or both. It's getting worse!

Sound like you're the one who need help if that's how you interpreted my post about the APU being microprogramed to emulate the SPUs with the CUs.

There's so much more wrong with that picture, it would be a hundred times more effort to write down all that is utterly wrong than it is worth spending time on that streaming pile.

Informed speculation is fun and requires a bit of self education.

This aimed at me or your opinion of onQ's posts? Just reading a lot of the replies to onQ's posts will show confusion and frustration. Many say he's straight up crazy with his spec.

I just asked his opinion what he thinks the actual Neo specs will be on Wednesday rather than be bogged down on theoretical possibilities that he says aren't what he expects Neo to have anyway.

That's what I do. I'd rather buy a ND or DICE game.

It us and people are using it. Perhaps it's the tech itself that it isn't used more because the gpu stalls are not that often happening as people wish?
What is that even supposed to mean?

You remind me of the typical arm chair developer, being completely distant to what engine devs do every day but come up with their theory about how these people should work.
You're wrong. I've written code and I know that it's not a easy job. But these guys are getting paid for it. Even Ubisoft is aware of GPGPU, but they don't seem to use it a lot in their games.

There's no excuse for shitty, least common denominator porting (using x86-64 code for physics). DICE has so many ports to do and they run very well on different platforms.

Neo is releasing in October then.

I'm hoping that it's going to be late September or very early October. I've never upgraded the hard drive on my launch day PS4 and I'm going to have to delete a lot of stuff to fit my day 1 PSVR purchases. Assuming things like Driveclub VR, Battlezone, Eve and RIGS are going to be 30-40gb each, that's a lot of space to find.

Easier if I can preload them onto a 1tb Neo...

It probably just is that you enjoy stirring those with even less technical knowledge than you into giving you attention (and those with more you aggravate by doing so).

But it's like you just found a stick with a sharp edge while combing down your tree, and then based on what you just learned (cutting your finger) you start explaining about Swiss army knives to the peers around you.

Nintendo does not release specs as everyone thinks their hardware is toaster parts anyway. If Nintendo mad a powerful console they would tell us.

No specs = its crap, please dont ask.

If Sony hardware is good spec, they will tell us.

From an advertising perspective, how can you really show the improvements without spec details unless they show PS4 and Neo side by side? I doubt they would want to show how much worse the PS4 version looks because they still have consumers of that product. Also the improvements are largely going to be word of mouth from the press because it's not like many people at home are going to be able to tell the differences from a stream, especially if the main difference is 4k vs 1080p. You have to see that in person.

Jaguar supports some opcodes that the Zen doesn't.

Citation? It's extremely rare that a newer generation x86 CPU omits instructions introduced in prior generations, with some rare exceptions that are typically used in kernel mode with hand-rolled assembly. For the most part the compiler's instruction selection will stick to those with pretty broad support precisely because they're generally applicable.

Sure, the information will be available following the event. But I don't think there will be a big slide saying '5 TERAFLOPS' in big flashing letters.

Maybe they'll take a page from Apple's book with one of these bad boys:

iphone2013-0153.jpg

....Why would you not show the specs? It would take a minute or two for Cerny to explain...

Because usually they just don't do that at press conferences. You don't want it to get too technical tbh. Everyone does this. Apple does it when unveiling the new iPhone. The Surface Book was unveiled with a vague 'GeForce GPU' and some information how it was faster than a macbook.

Zen ditched some x86 extensions, IIRC.

If PS4 games use those opcodes (some devs use hand-crafted assembly in certain code sections), then they won't run on a Zen CPU. Let's hope that Sony restricts their usage in the PS4 SDK guidelines.

It's like Jeff Rigby decided to create an alt with the express purpose of making the original seem reasonable by comparison, isn't it? Speculation is fun and it's something anyone can reasonably take part in. Presenting yourself as some kind of technical genius when you're just parroting technobabble phrases is going to end badly when you're dealing with people who actually have some depth in the field.

It gets interesting when both talk to each other.
