Sony’s Andrew House Found Microsoft’s Response to the PS4 Pro “Quite Intriguing”

Gotta love how people are so eagerly trying to "catch" Spencer or to show how hypocrite he is. People are just trying to find things that aren't there. House made clearly comment out of being bit hurt of bad publicity whole 4k BR thing brought to them. But to either side this whole is absolutely nothing. Only ones doing console wars are fans here.

Yikes, this thread has gotten worse.

This applies to House, but also to people here reacting with the same incredulity: Why are positive, true descriptions of a product considered "dirty pool"? I wasn't sure I was thinking of the same thing until I went back to the article. Saying the the Scorpio will be the most powerful console, and that the XB1 S supports 4K BR simply aren't mud-slinging.

Because Jimmies rustled.

Greenberg may as well add:
Effective marketing capable of rustling feathers ✅

This is like when TV shows roll footage of politicians doing and saying bad things and the politicians blame them for showing the footage. Except Microsoft didn't even mention Sony or anything besides their own products.

There's no need to explain. Sony fans will see what they want to see.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I've seen nothing wrong with anything MS has said or done. This is what competition is. Unless they're saying things actually untrue then any social media barbs are completely acceptable.

I'll never understand people who get angered by what a corporation tweets or advertises. Ultimately the consumer will just benefit anyways.

Lmao at the first 3 pages of people coming at Andrew at something he was ASKED ABOUT out of nowhere.

Then comimg at Sony at a comercial from 3 years ago.

Lmao.

yeah, i'm sure he just happened to give a response like that. he clearly hadn't thought about it all. come on.

i love it. the sony console war nerds wouldn't shut up about the video 3 years ago, and now they can't handle when it's gets thrown back in their faces.

Honestly I don't see the Comercial as a Shot. MS tried to change a basic Feature that existed since the beginning of consoles. The ability to trade or borrow game from friends. No Company would have passed on the Monumental blunder.

Didn't get the memo regarding the 14th Amendment
House should probably realize console wars /=/ marketing but this comment by him makes it seem like that's all that Sony can say against Microsoft with regards to countering Scorpio.

I would also hope that Scorpio's power advantage over the Pro would be obvious since it's a year out. I don't think anything Microsoft has said has been overly negative.

Bless Andy's heart for what he's done for the PlayStation brand... but I don't trust his ass only b/c of his alter ego. Don't tell me he's not Little Finger!? I mean caaaaaam onnnnn, identical.

Come on, Sony and Microsoft are never going to stop taking shots at the competition. Even Nintendo aren't immune to this.

But, by and large they're all fairly supportive of each other publically these days. Just don't take your pr too seriously and you'll be fine!

Here's a serious question:

Why does anyone is this thread give a shit about any of this? Whether it's to defend or gloat, why are you personally invested? DO you guys work at Sony or MS?

This is a strange hobby.

Pot, kettle.

I came to post this. Was glad I didn't have to.

I mean, seriously, it's cute that Andrew House thought that Microsoft was going to just roll over and let Sony have a moment where it blatantly exposed a particular weakness that could be exploited to their advantage. It's like they're totally oblivious to the history of this industry and its less-than-kind marketing against competition, a good deal of which they openly participated in.

I enjoy the competition. Keeps things fresh in this industry.

lol, this isn't fresh. same ol' passive aggressive bullshit being peddled as competition. same boxes, same shit, just barely clinging onto whatever ground they hold right now until PC gaming swallows everything whole.

Man these threads bring them out of the woodwork haha
I like the new shortened console cycle, it's a new launch with all the bitterness and angst every year

And this. Lol

To be fair, everyone loves a little competitive smack talk, which explains the industry and this thread. ;) But... That's not what's even going on here. MS basically mentioned a feature their product has that the competition doesn't. House ends up coming off salty and a little petty against a company he used to work for.

Love how they're acting all righteous and funny yet right under their smug faces there is a small information bit about their new scammy, injustified multiplayer paywall they secretly introduced without even talking about it.

And now they think they're above Microsoft and are "intrigued" about their much less inflammatory tweets. The PS4 pro was a huge letdown that made the two next Xbox consoles look much better, get over it and return the salt to the ocean, House.

It's unbelievable how much of the goodwill Sony has lost since the mid-to-late PS3 days, and they just won't stop until Xbox turn the tides again.
Hahaha

Microsoft were deliberately trying to screw over consumers. Sony just made a kind of bland and uninteresting product. I don't see anything wrong with Microsoft doing what they did, that's just competition, but it was not the same situation at all. Microsoft deserved all the hate they got then, and they deserve all the doubt they still get.

Well, either Spencer likes this kind of agressive PR.
Then he's a hypocrite.
Or he really doesn't like it.
Then he is out of control about his PR machine.

Your choice.

While I personally think the whole thing is overblown a tad, but it's obviously#1.

Btw it's not that aggressive PR either. Not even in the same category as "Sega does what Nintendo'n't" just in this industry.

And compared to other industries? MS PR the last two weeks would be laughed at if called "aggressive"

Is this all over a tweet where Microsoft contrasted their new console with Sony's new console in an especially innocuous way?

Because, if so...damn. It apparently takes one tweet flashing competitive spirit to cancel out all the goodwill you've built up, and turn you into a hypocrite.

Sounds like House is just feeling alittle bit uncomfortable for the first time 3 years. Granted, the Xbox execs were a bit too eager. Almost as if they'd had little to parade for 3 years.

That's how I interpret it at least.

No offense, and this goes to people on both sides, but trying to put stock in a Corporate Executives words - and trying to shoehorn them into a position of leadership and morale is absolutely stupid. This war of words won't end as long as there's money to be made because that's how Capitalism works. Andrew House, Phil Spencer, Gaben, Peter Moore, Reggie Fils Aime, et al. are walking talking PR lunchboxes masqueraded in twitter avatars, slogans, and doublespeak with an intention to try and humanize something that can never- ever- ever be humanized: the art of trying to take as much money from you with as little effort as possible.

At the end of the day- in Andrew House's world - as long as he is wearing a Sony Interactive Entertainment lanyard - he will say whatever he has to - the same goes for Phil Spencer. Trying to attach any sense of dignity / nobility to a console war - even at the corporate level is a foolish endeavor.

And to be quite frank, a salty Phil Spencer, a bullish Andrew House, and a house of cards that is willing to do whatever it takes - is in the consumer's best interest. Innovation and pro-consumer activity are born and bred out of a position of weakness. Endless praise and corporate worship will never be in your interest. I'm glad he's rattled.

I say this as a Sony fan: the only thing intriguing over the last two weeks, is the complete and total misdirection/miscommunication during the reveal of the PlayStation Pro. Andrew's intrigue should be less concerned about Xbox's Twitter tactics and more concerned with how to genuinely educate consumers- who even at the enthusiast/journalist level- are genuinely misinformed.

When the press is parroting words such as: "The Xbox One S and PlayStation Pro are comparable," ; when the PlayStation 4 Slim thread has denizens of users under the impression 1080p gamer's won't see any difference between the Pro and the vanilla machine; AND when popular Youtubers/PlayStation personalities/hardcore gamers insist they won't benefit from Pro without a 4K television or HDR: someone failed at their job.

How an organization that has been so on the ball this entire generation could fumble an introduction to an entirely new paradigm in the console space in less than an hour in a collage of the absolute worst presentation since E3 2006 intermixed techno-babble and compressed footage run through a vaseline filter- THAT IS WHAT I CALL INTRIGUING.

This post and your post above sum up my thoughts too (but put in a much better way lol). You hit the nail on the head - completely agree!

Nobody is saying Microsoft can or can't do these things, but considering the head of your console division has previously stated that he does not like the bickering between company's and would rather his organisation rise above it, it does ring a bit odd.

Bingo. This is the whole point.

A+ fan fiction.

in terms of their attitude towards the competition

Come on.

Difference is Sony does not commonly comment directly or indirectly on competition unless it's to comment on some success.

Microsoft on the other hand frequently goes for the back-handed compliments. It's just different company and PR culture.

Microsoft's head is the one who said they would frown upon it and rise above it. They made their own standard.

This is a time where being indifferent is the better route in the short and long term. Sony usually does it. House is commenting here only because someone asked him about it.

It's amazing how many people have (by either choice or ignorance) missed this rather obvious tidbit.

Not that Sony doesn't deserve to be called out for it when they do dumb shit.

It's selective hearing. Some people want MS to look better than they make themselves look.

And yes Sony should be called out when they pull dumb shit too.

Damn House is a little sensitive, like MS screwed up thier momentum with Xbox S and Scorpio making both PS4 Slim/Pro look like poor offerings in comparison. Seems like he's seeing them as a threat now.

Maybe in an alternate reality where the PS4 slim and Pro aren't going to outsell the Xbone S and Scorpio by huge margins.

It's true. A position of weakness, criticism, and failure is what breeds innovation and OUR (the consumer's) best interest.

1. Nintendo's absolute failure in the console space motivated them to release Mother 3 and Earthbound in the United States; Iwata Asks became a thing, and steps were taken to embrace consumers internationally. Nintendo has never been more "intriguing" and interesting to me since 2006, I'm hype for NX.

2. Microsoft's awful unveil of the Xbox One convinced them to absolutely trash the initial concept of what Xbox One was. Some may call it a 180, but out of the 180 came backwards compatibility, EA Access, legitimate attempts at broadening the exclusive portfolio, and an Xbox controller that finally supports Bluetooth.

3. Sony's fall from grace with the PlayStation 3 created the most developer friendly environment in the history of consoles, the most drastic redesign of the Dualshock since it's inception, and a machine that was more POWERFUL AND CHEAPER than it's closest competition.

Failure motivates trailblazing. I may disagree with my fellow GAFFers, but I'm always going to be on the side of a GAFFer before I side with any corporation. Corporate worship- for as long as I can remember being a gamer- has done absolutely nothing for innovation. In fact all it ever does is raise prices (remember 3DS launch price of 249.99?), position anti-consumer loopholes (raising PSN/XBL prices any one?), and takes us for granted.
