No Man's Sky drops below 1000 concurrent players on steam

Plinko

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Isn't this normal for games that aren't competitive FPS games?

This is how you don't keep your game alive.

They literally can post small bug fixes, but nope. They've gone full dark.

To be fair every person deals with failure/pressure differently. That said, the fact that they have gone completely silent is not a good look. At the very least publish a statement apologizing or assure your customers that you are aware of the issue they are having with the game and you are working full steam ahead to fix them.

Pretty incredible drop!

This graph also illustrates quite accurately Sean Murray's reputation.

it's not that different if you compare to many other games on Steam.

Yeah. I feel like a lot of people will use this to fit the narrative they have painted in their own mind.

Sure the game has had a huge backlash...but graphs like that are what I also thought was the similar trend most games would see barring huge MMO's

Can you provide some examples? As examples that this is quite unprecedented for such a successful game at launch were already provided before you made this post.

I'm personally waiting to see what content they add in the next patch before I jump back in.

I can't imagine what they could add to make going back worth it imo. Like what would I really do with base building? I'm never going to go back to any planet I visited. I guess it would be cool if other people could see the buildings I built or I could find left over buildings from others, but to what end? What would I do with that? Anything significant enough they could add would make more sense in a sequel.

My bad. My post was made with a narrative I had painted in my own head it seems.

Looking at the figure that MGSV still gets 3K players concurrently I must say NMS is doing bad. Although I don't like comparing a huge established IP with a long legacy to it.

Some games more people are playing than NMS:

Eve Online
Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag
Far Cry 4
Far Cry 3
Freestyle 2: Street Basketball
Football Manager 2012

I was so excited at the potential of this game. Ended up canceling my preorder before it came out.

Look forward to a few hours of enjoyment @ $5 or less.

I understand everyone's feelings, but I think this is a bit of a shame. A perfectly pleasant, relaxing game throttled into irrelevance by atrocious messaging and mismanaged expectations.

I might mourn the NMS we never got, but I still enjoy the one we did.

It's roughly down around the current numbers of the original Dark Souls, for reference.

I feel like this is a game that could be really cool if they released mod tools of some kind. You know, add the ability to add textures/creature types to the generation engine, tweak the difficulty and resource scarcity for a better experience, that kind of thing.

Not really. That 200,000 peak is exceptionally high and that drop off is like nothing I've personally seen. If you look at the stats list there are tons of older non-fps and single player games holding much stronger and not ever coming close to that insane peak player count. Elite Dangerous is almost 2 years old, sold in the same ball park over a much longer time, including sales and what not. Peak 18000, current 5000. Compared to NMS's Peak 200,000 Current 1800. No Man's Sky I think is exceptional in the way it completely deflated so quickly.

I stopped playing at about 15 hours. I enjoyed it, but don't want to invest anymore time until the next content patch. Too many games to play.

How NMS went from a potential GOTY candidate to a punchline is astounding. It will be amazing to read all the behind the scenes stuff in a year or so.

I liked the game for what it was and got about 60 hours from the game before I called it quits. But there really doesn't seem to be any incentive at all to play much beyond where I am now. The end goal, such as it is, appears to be mostly meaningless, and there's simply not enough variation to show you much of significance beyond the first few hours. Once you've exhausted the mechanics (which you can do simply by trying to achieve all the milestones), there's nothing really left. I'm still 100,000+ light years from the center and it doesn't sound like there's any reason to bother, even based on what people in the OT have said.

I bear no ill will towards Hello Games and don't agree with the narrative that Sean Murray outright lied to media outlets. But this isn't a particularly surprising development.
