New 3D Mario game shown in Nintendo Switch trailer

What would you even do in an online Mario?

Everything that you did in 3D World with 3 other people? I and several other friends from all over the world were hyped for the game before release and excited at the prospect of playing 3D World together online, but nooope.

3D World is my favorite Mario gane and I played it by myself. Is not like the multiplayer was recquired to finish it.

Game could be great no matter what.

I hate buying a game if I know right from the outset that I'm going to be locked out of a major feature I would have enjoyed. I'll have to wait and see how the levels are designed. If they're designed around multiplayer I won't bother.

Triple jump making a comeback is a good sign though.

Why are those mountains transparent ?

Mario 3D World: Colour Splash.

I wonder if that heart is health, that means that Mario probably doesn't shrink anymore.

I'm hoping for a open-level, funnel-level hybrid. I greatly prefer the latter and I think the open levels just make doing everything a chore, but for the sake of everyone hating on the godly 3D World'series style I think a compromise is apt.

Given the Tokyo studio's development history I'd be a bit surprised if it's as open as some as assuming, I mean their last game was Captain Toad ffs, but who knows maybe they're taking fan input to heart.
Agreed, but I still think that what they showed implies a much more ambitious world than 3D World. We won't know for sure until we get more gameplay, but still. I'm pretty optimistic about this being a more open game that manages to take cues from all of the previous 3d Marios, 3d land/World included

I'm sure you'll be able to rotate the camera with the right thumb stick. I assume they put the camera at that angle when recording to show off the game's beauty.

Hmm. You think that will be the default though for SP? If so the platforming is going to be very different than all previous 3D Marios, right? IIRC the camera has never been quite like that in the other games.

Do you want mario 64's dive in or not?
do you even care about it?

for those who don't realize what i'm talking about, the "dive" (combined with jumps):

do you think that nintendo bringing "the dive" back is so unlikely that it's not even worth discussing?

bonus question:
why are so many saying mario 64-2 when we don't even know if the dive is in or not? isn't it a big deal? seeing the reacions, i guess it's not ;_;

Bringing back something like the color blocks/switches from SMW?

Ooh now that's a neat idea.

Not sure how people are seeing another 3D Mario World. It looks like Super Mario 64 with better graphics (which is what I wanted) and but maybe with streamlined levels (which is disappointing as I prefer bigger more open worlds in 3D Mario)

You kinda answered your own question with that second part. The actual level looks like it has elements of a 3D World-type stage but like I said it's only a brief glimpse.

l seem to remember that one of the original idea for Galaxy was that Mario would hit a switch hidden somewhere and the entire level would drastically change in one way or another. lt was dropped because it was considered too complicated to implement. l wonder if this will be the core mechanic in this game, it'd certainly be a good fit for a Mario game on a system called Switch.

The bright colors and transluscent structures seem to indicate some kind of pain mechanic possibly? Could you imagine if this were a spiritual successor to sunshine except this time flud shot paint

This looks like the midground between 3D World and Galaxy/64. On one hand, I'm excited to see this formula truly perfected, but on the other, I kinda hoped it shifted away from the 3D world/land style of gameplay. But if the world's are open and there is room for exploration like 64 and Sunshine, I'll definitely get this day 1.

Why is that normal bullet bill homing in on Mario? It is neither red nor cat I call bs.

edit: Though I think they were like that in galaxy I don't remember.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
I'm pretty sure those are giant shards of ice, not translucent mountains.

This is what l was talking about:

Hayashida Since we were making a full-fledged sequel, we couldn't just have a new character show up. We needed something to serve as a completely new axis for the game to revolve around. At first, that was the concept of "more," but later we focused on the concept of "switching."

Iwata What's "switching"?

Hayashida That's when you do something like push a button, the surrounding world suddenly changes.

Iwata Oh, I see. The button changes the environment—and not just a little, but in a big, dynamic way.

Hayashida Right.

Iwata Why did you decide on that?

Hayakawa I thought we needed something that would make a significantly different impression than the first game. At first, when we had the idea of using the engine from the first game as a foundation, I think everyone thought of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

Koizumi When we made The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask after The Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time, we adopted the "three-day system."11 That's a system that suddenly changes the game world.

Iwata Oh, so for Super Mario Galaxy 2 as well, you tried to think of a system whereby you could change the whole game world.

Hayashida Right. But when we actually tried to do it, it was hard and just wouldn't come together.

Koizumi I knew from all the trouble we had with the Zelda series that you have to get all the various elements to fit. Sometimes you have to give up on things you've made up to that point.

Iwata You lose a lot a lot of different things.

Koizumi I was afraid of that, so I decided we shouldn't get too hung up on creating a new axis for the whole game to revolve around and I told Hayashida-san that all we needed to do was dedicate ourselves to making interesting contents.

l wonder if they went back to the drawing board and tried to fully realize that "switching" concept. That'd be interesting.

Because you visit a town, with buildings you immediately want to scale to see what might be hidden on top of them, actual landmarks and goofy NPCs, because the Mexican theme is more original than just the usual generic desert you expect to find in your Mario game and because the level design actually seems to encourage exploration and messing around instead of just jumping from one featureless cube floating in the void to another.

This. I like what I see so far.

LOL

Why are people referring to what are clearly crystal formations as "mountains"?

It's incredibly obvious..haha

Anyway, I really, REALLY, hope this has M64 leanings. It's looking good/possible!!

yeah buttons changing the world, i thought about that too, maybe the mountains are this game's version of the ! blocks from SMW?

Not gonna lie, return of the triple jump is enough to sell me.

Love the fiesta town aesthetic to the level shown. A 3DS Skylanders game had a few levels like that and I thought it was a cool theme for a 3d platformer that you dont see often

Resembles Super Mario Sunshine the most.

No notable new mechanics this time, but local co-op is possible.

Taken the moon and distinct and design elements going to assume:

It is open world

Each planet has a specific theme

In other words Mario meets Banjoo-Kazooie

Cactus theme is cool like a more colorful take on Super Mario Bros 2 desert stages.

This is probably the most intriguing game revealed.

Seems early, but promises a return to the massive mobility of sm64

Design is so lush, world looks open, yet everything suggests a behind the back runner.

Name: Mario Switch maybe Super Mario Switch. Really wan to know how it differniates from previous Mario games.

The Wii is the counterpart to the NES. The Wii U is the counterpart to the SNES. And the Switch is the counterpart to the N64.

This is definitely a Mario 64 sequel.

hilarious how one camera angle switch can make people think "OMG MARIO 64-2" instead of the next extension of 3D World/Land this 100% looks like

how does this look like 3d world/land? visually sure, but from the little we've seen it looks and feels more open. also, i doubt it's something akin to 3d world/land if they've done away with isometric camera in favor of a more free one

that would be amazing. 3d world was a complete camera clusterfuck when playing with 4 players

Yeah not having to share the screen would be a dramatic improvement over 3D World's multiplayer.

I know it must be sad to see your favorite brand of homogenized mediocrity being dropped in favor of a more traditional approach but there's no need for denial. Miyamoto and co warned you, 3D World was a temporary attempt to attract the 2d sidescrollers audience, it was never supposed to be the future of the series.

It's a few seconds of footage.
