I don't know if this has been discussed already, but.... I know there is rumors of the screen being a capacitive touch screen, but is there any reason it needs to be a touch screen? When it's docked you don't have access to the screen. If a game had a gameplay element that required touch, you couldn't use it when it is docked.

Is there any good reason that the NS tablet needs to have a touch screen?

To play mobile games.

It could give improvement to many things when used in portable mode. It has to be designed to be used without touch, yes, but the benefits of touch in portable mode can still be utilised. A smoother UI for example. And if they release a new Mario Maker for example that would be a lot better to play with touch controls in portable mode. Plus it allows them to have mobile games playable on the system, even if that's a portable mode only feature.

Yeah, it's on the bottom, what the hell. Is this an oversight or intentional for some reason (like the charge port location on the new apple mouse IIRC) I wonder?

I will wait for the WiiU vs Switch Zelda comparison before I trade in my WiiU. If there isn't a huge difference they can keep it.

The more I see and hear the name, the more I dislike it. I know it's only been a day and a half since it was even announced, but it's not feeling any more natural than it did before. At first I was slightly charmed by the active, descriptive nature of the name and I was just happy they dropped the Wii brand. But I really think they could have done better.

I don't think there will be. I think maybe the NS version might have better performance but visually I don't expect any kind of seeable difference.

I think it's a good word to describe the selling point and main feature of the system

I agree, but there's gotta be something else that could've done the same thing just as effectively without sounding so awkward. But hell, if I got used to saying Wii U and Xbox One, I can get used to Switch.

Not sure if this has been asked but has there been a possibility of Nintendo doing the same thing Microsoft/Sony has done by re-releasing an "upgraded" console mid-generation. Scares me a bit if one purchases this and 2 years down the line they release an "improved" iteration.

You're ignoring the benefit of indie developers, which is a very big deal, and the fact that there's a very good chance this will have the best western third party support of any handheld.

I noted that in my first post a few pages back.

I'm not saying 3DS and Vita had the same level of support the PS1 and PS2 did. When I said "last bastion of traditional Japanese games," that didn't mean a return to the PS1 or PS2, just possibly the ultimate last place where what's left of those developers will show up.

As for the Wii U comparison, the Wii U's problem in Japan is that it was a console.

You're right but who'd want to do that? In fact, who'd really want to use the kickstand? It's probably a tiny market who would like kids in cars or something.

Anyone else planning to dock this thing as soon as you get your hands on it, and never taking it back out? I have no desire whatsoever to take it out of the house. Maybe I'll take it with me on bathroom breaks but that's about it.

I think it's one of those things you need to try before you 'plan' to do anything. I never planned to use smartphones when they started coming into the market and here I am swiping away at this bloody thing.

I actually think the stand up tablet on your coffee table with your pro controller or shell controller is a great way to multitask while watching television. (Opposite to holding that clunky Wii U tablet-pad for long stretches).

I'm in it for the performance and trying to relive the GCN days. GCN had a handle but I didn't take it around with me. My Switch will be docked.

When playing Zelda BotW, yes, will keep Switch docked to play Zelda in my living room, hopefully at 1080p and locked @ 30fps.

And yes I realize the Wii U version is 720p, that's why I said "hopefully at 1080p" on Switch.

Well I planned to connect it to the charger and just play it on its own display most of the time, but I guess not.

I'm hoping it'll great for the internet browser like the gamepad is personally.

Hasnt Ninty had pretty good relations with indie developers over the Wii U? Like Yacht club, Wayforward (they have long history with N but still ) etc

Maybe that will be the big thing for this if its easy to develop for

Nintendo really likes to promote art and "do it yourself" software. Hell, they have (nearly) an entire platform dedicated to it. Aside from that, UI is way more managable on a touch screen.

He likes their games man. He can't just not buy them when he enjoys playing them. He just doesn't feel it's justified buying their new console that's not that much different in power (according to him) to what he currently has.

That's pretty much the definition of port begging.

Looks really slick and exciting. I'll be there Day 1.

Here are my two main issues:

1.) No D pad for portable play? If I'm taking Kirby on the go, I'm used to having a proper cross shaped D pad. I'm curious how the four buttons alternative will play.

2.). If I take it on the go, then others can't use it at home when I'm gone. So if my wife wants to watch Netflix or play Super Mario Maker while I'm gone, then one of us will have to do without. It's not a deal breaker, but it means that I'll probably only take it on the go sporadically and usually leave it docked.

Edit: actually on the first, they could always sell a L Joycon peripheral with a D pad.

I f they make something like this I would have to buy Skyrim yet again.

The dock has 2 Hdmi ports...

Does this suggest 4K video playback? The PS4 Pro has 2 so that one can send the 4k HDR video to the TV and the other can send sound to non-hdcp 2.2 compliant sound systems...

I'm really curious to know if the main unit will have a slot for SD or microSD cards and what size is supported.

I don't have a spare HDD left for this console and when I take this thing with me I don't want to take the HDD too. So I really hope it'll support at least 256GB (micro)SD cards, maybe even 512GB.

I'd gladly buy a Joy-Con L with a standard D-Pad. I'd buy two if they made a second configuration with the D-Pad on top instead of the stick. There may even be a market for a Joy-Con R with the stick at the top.

Super Nintendo didn't have a Gimmick either besides the jump in graphics and in the US at least they had a pack-in with Super Mario World. That shit was good.

Do something like that again even if you can't exploit a gimmick.

They tried that with the Gamecube and it failed (although there were other factors at play there). And going heads on with Sony and MS would not work. Not right now at least, they could have tried after the Wii but they fumbled the whole thing. Nintendo needs to be seen as a complete different choice from PS4/Xbox but still maintaining the appeal to get some of the fans from these consoles. Given that, there's pretty much nothing much better they could have done here (unless they fuck it up launching several confusing SKU options or having a 1 hour battery or something).

The traditional console Nintendo is not gone like forever, but it's just not a possibility right now. They need to strengthen the brand and the interest in their ecosystem and the Switch being even a moderate success, which I'm pretty optimistic on, should help with that.

I do wonder about pricing.
I think since they're going for something inbetween portable and consoles it should be inbetween in pricing too: $50.
Not sure if Nintendo would like the idea of that for something like Zelda, but they should consider it as a standard.
$30-40 for general handheld titles that don't push the system too much, $50-60 for those that do.
On Wii U they did go $50 for a lot of titles like DK or $40 like Captain toad, they should consider doing more of that.

cw_sasuke

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
From what i have gathered so farm from speaking with my non hardcore gaming friends - they seem really excited about the possibilities of the system, especially if the expected content will be there. Just being able from soling Zelda or Skyrim to having a small Mario Kart session with friends in the garden seems like a big deal.

Just from seeing the teaser trailer some would find a price up to 400$ justified - which is crazy. I really think that if priced for sub 300€ or even 249€ for launch this will be quite big.

The high production value games like Zelda have always been a bit more expensive here anyway. Even on 3DS we had games like Shin Megami Tensei or RE Revelations being more expensive for specific reason. Dont expect anything to change on that front. 40-50 for standard games and 60 for stuff like Zelda.

I think they might try something new when it comes to getting people to buy their digital versions.
