I better hope it's not plastic. Plastic scratches like hell and seeing this isn't a clamshell design it would get banged up easily. Gorilla glass or bust.

Yes, because why use plastic when you can use a material that gets spiderweb cracks when dropped from any height? Please. I hope they don't use "gorilla" glass. That shit is garbage

Smash, MK8 and Splatoon aren't like Hearthstone or Clash Royale. Could you imagine Splatoon's eSport potential with a better account system, better online and spectator tools? It could be amazing.

Oh yeah. Splatoon could be a major force in eSports. Nintendo don't yet seem to be wanting to go down that route, although the Switch reveal trailer seemed like it.

That's not really relevant to the Switch though which is what I was specifically discussing. Console launches are typically scheduled to hit the holiday season and Nintendo is straight up sitting this one out and aiming for quieter a portion of the year.

I've worked retail, Gamestop specifically, and post xmas shopping is just as big as pre xmas shopping. It is absolutely a consumer frenzy. If Nintendo can grab people's attention for that part of the year they'll do well, but they do need to jump on it.

In Japan, March is right in time for finishing tests, when new employees just have to attend orientation, and spring break for children before they enter their next grade level. Not the worst time to release a console.

How do you people manage with smartphones, laptops and tablets? Do you live in constant fear all the time??
No? I'm not talking about me. Nintendo won't even sell the Gamepad by itself. I have to wonder if they'll even sell the tablet by itself.

After two home consoles without an ethernet port, I think it's safe to say this one won't have one either.
That means nothing to me TBH. This system isn't some kiddy and grandpa advertisement like the Wii and Wii U were.

I think the TV output functions will come from the docking station......and fans, charging and maybe USB external HDD support?

Since the dock is apart of the console, it will be featured heavily regardless of if the handheld potion has the guts in it IMO.

Maturity, bitches.
lol @ thinking Miis are going anywhere.

If anything they'll probably be even more in your face on the main menu than they were with the Wii U's Wara Wara Plaza.

I still want a streaming dongle. Maybe they can allow chromecast integration. I don't have any place to put the dock with small children.

I disagree. I expect the Switch to have basic online functionality at the very least. Friends lists, party chat etc. Absolutely no reason it wouldn't.

If they really want to go after the eSports crowd it should support Ethernet. Splatoon and MK8 were both fantastic without it but still. I'd buy an adapter if I need to.

With the USB port they can easily add the ability to use the same one that worked on the Wii and Wii U. I have a feeling it might be difficult to do that with the dock being basic though. Might just use the wireless chips but then again apparently you might be able to plug storage into the dock.

The modern glass used in tablets isn't remotely as prone to shattering as you imply. But in any case the old saying still applies: 'Don't drop your shit'.

Following that basic rule has worked fine for me over the years. Never shattered anything and my screens remain scratch-free.

The booming phone case market since the majority have become glass begs to differ. They weren't nearly as prevalent before, and then they were mostly for aesthetics not protection

I know this may sound awful but I think Nintendo should go after dude bro crowd for launch then go and release more Nintendo like games shortly afterwards. Many folks avoid Nintendo as they think it's a kiddy system but looking at the initial trailer it seems Nintendo are going for that young adult market.

Launch should be something like this
Zelda
Elder Scrolls Skyrim
Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered
NBA 2K17
FIFA 2017
Codemasters Racing Game
Tekken 7
Super Smash Bros

Yes I know the above looks quite boring and the only games that would appease the NeoGAF crowd are Zelda and maybe Tekken 7. However the above has the genre variety, racing, Fighter, western RPG, FPS and sports. With all the most popular IPs for each genre with the likes of Tekken, COD, FIFA, Elder Scrolls and etc.

That would be the March launch line up
Then April they can release Mario Kart. May they can release Splatoon then the new Mario 3D Platformer down the line etc. No need for Nintendo to spoil their load with their first party games.

Launch lineup looks fine but why do you think the dude bruhs would want to get a Switch? Were they waiting for Nintendo's new hardware or what? They're on PS4 and XBO already.

COD, Skyrim and FIFA on the go may have potential appeal you never no unless Nintendo give it a shot it's not as if they can't go back to releasing more kid friendly fames and go back to marketing at the kid market afterwards. For launch its best to stay away from that kiddy market just in case they can get some dude bro gamers on board.

For example FIFA is huge in the UK if they market this right this has the potential to gain some sales especially with local multiplayer on the portable.

I feel like this will happen a bit of the way down the line, not for launch though. They could pitch this as one of the alternative models.

Dedicated handheld devices are declining extremely fast in thr USA and Europe. The Switch will live or die as TV bound console.

And I don't really see Nintendo having a chance against Sony in both markets and Microsoft in the American markets.

Didn't they attempt that with the Wii U launch??

Wii U Launch, first two months:

Assassins Creed 3
Batman Arkham City
Call Of Duty Black Ops 2
Darksiders 2
FIFA 13
Madden 13
Mass Effect 3
Ninja Gaiden 3 Razors Edge
Tekken Tag Tournament 2

I'd think there is a better chance this time, because people in the same household might want their own portable unit, at least after some time. Animal Crossing comes to my mind, which will most certainly come one day and this is something that can not be shared so easily, despite you can have more characters living in the same house.

I could even imagine a two screens - one dock SKU rather than any other SKU.

Tbh I was surprised how open he was being about the whole thing and thought highlighting him on a big channel like GameXplain was a bad idea. I had a feeling Nintendo might get in touch with him sooner or later... I just hope it's nothing too serious.

I don't understand why? I watched the whole thing and he barely let anything out really.

They did, the traditional Nintendo fanbase does not by western 3rd parties, thus they bailed. Since the type of people that will buy a new console at launch is the traditional Nintendo fanbase it will run into the exact same problems.

Or... Most of those were old as hell by the time the Wii U came out and we'd already bought them elsewhere...

They had ports of the latest console games yearly at the time (Cod, Ass etc) and "improved" ports as well. You can't continue to blame 3rd parties for well documented trends when not a single game did well comparatively with the userbase.

Wii U wasn't anything exciting over PS3 or 360. There was no reason for.someone to buy a Wii U over a 360 or PS3. The hook with the Switch is that games can be played at home and then taken on the go and also allow local multiplayer on portable mode which is great for games like FIFA. Also the marketing and branding on Wii U was a mess and it still had that Wii name which isn't appealing to the dude bro market. The Switch is where Nintendo can start from scratch. Modern Warfare Remastered, Tekken 7, Skyrim, FIFA and etc are extremely popular games in their genres.

They'll be large omission's on the switch as well, it's inevitable. Nintendo has a significant uphill battle that it won't win, best case scenario would be creating a good base for the next generation.

Yeah but without the benefit of active cooling and mains power to boost clock speed

True. But they could theoretically still go ahead with the upclock if the device is undocked but connected to HDMI and power. I mean, you're not going to hold it in your hand while it's connected to HDMI/power and there's a kickstand for good reason. The active cooling components are likely inside the switch itself so I don't see why it couldn't be actively cooling in this scenario.

Still, it all feels like a really un-Nintendo like way to handle all this, dividing their platform between portable and docked mode. I'd much prefer for them to stick to their guns and have the thing performing uniformly regardless of output (built-in screen or external monitor/TV). It would substantially upgrade the usefulness of the thing in terms of having a portable plug-and-play console and developers wouldn't be tasked with taking multiple hardware configurations into account.

So what should have Nintendo done?

I'm thinking this thing should absolutely come with a video-out on the device itself, without the dock.
At the very least I'd expect to see a "dock cable" or minidock, something that would plug in where the dock does and have a built-in HDMI connection or HDMI port on it, without the full tablet-swallowing size.

What happens if you break the tablet? You drop it and he screen smashes. Will they sell standalone tablets? Because the tablet is the console.
Unless it's a warranty thing and you can replace it directly, I doubt they make a big deal of this. Since the tablet is the vast majority of it, worst case is you buy a new set and end up with an extra dock.
UnemployedVillain said:
Why would you buy a Nintendo adapter? There are dozens of usb ethernet adapters
Just because something can be made to connect to a USB port doesn't necessarily mean the Nintendo system will know what to do with it.

Those ports in some cases were pretty old. If I were Nintendo I'd concentrate on games that would release in the first quarter of 2017. RE VII, Ni-Oh... those games are with publishers Nintendo is friendly with.

There's probably little likelihood of active cooling when not docked.

Not only would the CPU be consuming more watts running at a higher frequency, but then you have to use a fan to cool it. Motors are very power inefficient. If you want a system to chew through the battery, this is how you would design it.

Nintendo needs to start making bundles with multiplats. Like make a FIFA bundle in Europe. Make a Skyrim bundle, since they put it in the spotlight. And so on.

Ni-Oh seems to be a PS4 only type of deal though. RE7 is a bit more likely considering its multiplatform, however.

so perhaps that Nintendo should try to appeal to people that are not in its traditional fanbase... To do so, they need a product that has not he stigma that many consider to be part of the nintendo experience : low tech toyish products (It's not my opinion btw). I think that Switch is an answer to that. The idea of playing a lot of games on the go could interest "tradional core gamers".
And please, no "handheld market is dead, now it's all about the phones", cause there is certainly a place on the market for the switch, provided there are no bad news coming regarding specs.

Now to gauge the interest to third party products, they'll need simultaneous release. This is a key. Late ported skyrim, even if it is by a few months, will probably flop. And off course, on par support DLC and online wise. Which often the WiiU had not.

What's interesting now is that Switch is not a direct competitor of PS4. BUT, unlike Wii and WiiU, it can appeal to the so called "gamers".

My 2 cents.

Unlike Wii U ports, Switch ports have something that other versions don't have. Portability. You can play a full Fifa not a legacy gimped one (hopefully) anywhere. You can play a real COD anywhere. You can play NBA 2k anywhere.

Even with Skyrim, I think it's the kind of game that benefits from not being limited to the time spent in front of TV.

You don't get that on any other console.

But Nintendo needs to be more active in promoting the 3rd parties and must make bundles as I said to try and get also other people on board.
