Western Animation |OT| Cartoon, Cartoon, Cartoon

What is this thread about?

This thread is essentially to provide a common sharing ground for western animation lovers. Much like Individual Anime OT tend to go unnoticed for lots of shows, several people on Gaf have noticed how the individual cartoon OT tend to also go under radar. This thread can act to find out information about western animation shows old and new while celebrating them.

What is western animation?

In my extremely broad definition I consider western animation to be any animation not specifically produced and catered in Asia. A western animation show can be animated in Asia but its writers and target audience are not.

Thereby western animation can include anything from Canada's Teletoons to French animation like Wafku.

What subgenres are there?

There are hundreds of animated shows of all kinds in the west. To be precise, there is no one specific target audience for these types of shows. Whether it be for kids, teens, adults, or families, you can practically find a cartoon for anyone.

Where can I watch these shows?

There are dozens of streaming platforms ranging from Netflix to Hulu all carrying multiple seasons of cartoon shows for your viewing pleasure. In addition, sites like Disney XD, Adult Swim, and Cartoon Network allow for the streaming of their shows directly from their sites so long as you have a eligible cable provider.

Where can I buy these shows?

Lots of media retailers such as Best Buy carry many of these types of shows in DVD format. Do take notice that many western animated shows tend not to get Blu-Rays very often. Still, standard DVDs are your option for having a physical copy of these shows.

Guys, Mission Hill was really good and hardly anyone talks about it.

This is the only place a post like this fits. Thanks OP.

Psyched for this thread. One of the two OTs I wanted to see on GAF. Must get my finger out to make the other one before someone else does!

Top three toons:
The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat
Freakazoid!
Earthworm Jim

Bronx-Man

Damn, I almost forgot how good BTAS' animation was. That's Akira-level quality.

Steven Universe is the greatest western kids animated show ever tbh
Well it's either that or Avatar. Spongebob dropped off after 3 legendary series, and Samurai Jack wasn't around for that long. But yeah, it's definitely near the top.

TRON Uprising was great. Although it is as good as dead now, I recommend it to anyone.

A helluva lot better than Legacy. I'm just glad I still own the whole series on Amazon.

Warner Bros and MGM don't show the old cartoons anymore because of their political incorrectness. Shame because they were hilarious. Especially the ones directed by Chuck Jones.

Man, I really need to sit down and watch this show one day. I saw a bunch of episodes as a kid but I barely remember them.

Right now i'm busy going through Regular Show and I am loving it! It is a bit repetitive at times, but the unique/tender moments tend to hit hard in my opinion. The episodes dealing with how self conscious Rigby and Mordecai are about their lackluster school life and personal lives really get to me on a personal level.

I started watching Rick and Morty on Netflix UK recently and I love it. Hope they add season 2 soon.

That episode was done by the same animation studio (Tokyo Movie Shinsha)!
... I need to rewatch B:TAS
Yes.

Yes!
It's been awhile but that single Clayface cut is probably the best piece of animation from the entire DCAU, no contest.
Yep.

Great thread! This baka gaijin animation can be pretty amazing.

So sad what happened to that film :(

Richard didn't do himself any favors by being so meticulous with the project considering the backers he was dealing with.

At least we have the re-cobbled version.

I mean aside from A Troll in Centarl Park IIRC at last all of his movies are still watchable.

Along with Troll in Central Park, The Pebble and The Penguin and Rock-a-doodle are real stinkers, and Anastasia is fairly mediocre with some high points.

Never seen Thumbelina or Titan A.E.

Never seen Thumbelina or Titan A.E.

I remember Pebble and The Penguin being passable though if your movie features fucking Jim Belushi then its going to suck.

I like Anastasia, there is some incredible work especially that train scene IIRC.

Is it also okay ti bring up less traditional Western animation projects like Persepolis and Waltz with Bashir? I was also a huge fan of Ralph Bakshi's filmography, but I know he's controversial to say the least.

EDIT: Derp, didn't see the Fritz the Cat convo earlier. Personally I'm not sure if it's aged that well, but for all its crudeness I adore Heavy Traffic.

Weird way of spelling Gravity Falls but to each their own.
